its time the law got its act together.A landlord is jailed for allowing smoking and killers and rapists are getting released early or not even jailed its time for decent people to stand up and be counted

No one was jailed for smoking, he was jailed for not paying a court issued fine.

What should have happened to him for not paying his fine?

Non payment of a fine is a threat to the survival of the government.
(if we all witheld taxes and didn't pay fines the government could not be financed)
That is why they need to land heavily on any such dissent.

It shows you that government rank their own survival as of greater import than the life of a child. This is what 'democracy' has lowered us to.

Fines are used as a threat to uphold the law.

Would you prefer us to go back to cutting hands off instead?

It was always quite a spectacle in Riyadh's "Chop Square" after Friday morrning prayers - and in many other regional places of Government. Heads and hands off and stoning of thr ladies that gave it too freely - none of it a pretty site.
Yet somehow we class these very same people as educated, wordly and on a par with Western (Christian) Standards

Maybe my rose tinted glasses need clening.

Never wanted to witness it that closely - one of my Saudi radar techs had an uncle that lived on the square - could have had a grandstand seat if I had wished.

As a sign of Saudi hospitality it used to be a bit of a tradition in Taif if any westerners were around chop chop square at Friday noon that the crowd would open up and make space at the front to enable a better view.

That was the reason that I was warned off attending in the square - they would push you through to the front so that you got a good view of Sharia discipline
