Would AccyWebbers like a Parliamentary hustings?
The British Legion one seems to have gone due to the length of time the Conservatives took to select.
Would Accywebbers want a hustings? Possibly the town hall or a club or hall elsewhere could be used. People should have the opportunity to ask questions and it would be good for the site per se. |
Re: Would AccyWebbers like a Parliamentary hustings?
I like the idea of asking questions of all the candidates.
If it's done in the real world there's always the chance that not everyone gets a chance, of feels able, to ask their question in public. Why can't it be done online, on Accy Web? Three of the candidates are already members, and the others could be invited to take part, and told when it's starting. It could be live, but need not be. We could post our questions and the candidates could give their answers. It could have a time limit, so it doesn't drag on and on. A long weekend perhaps. I'm sure some press coverage could be had, to publicise it, and alert anyone not already a member here of the event. |

Re: Would AccyWebbers like a Parliamentary hustings?
There are many public buildings an I am sure if accywebbers are up for it it'll get done. Webcast will broaden the viewing.

I do think an 'Accy Web' one, an internet forum, should be online...because that's what this forum is. What does it matter, who can physically deliver the best answers, or shout the loudest? It's what's said, not how, that's more important. |
Re: Would AccyWebbers like a Parliamentary hustings?
but thats roys decision .. if he wants to host a 'net hustings'

Re: Would AccyWebbers like a Parliamentary hustings?
When I first started in politics public meetings was the norm, they seem to have wayned in later years because of wall to wall media coverage, but in the sixties the three main parties Tory Labour and Liberal all had a rally at the Accy Town Hall or Occasionally Ossy Town Hall, think the first meeting I went to was an open air meeting on Accy Market fronted by Harry Hynd the sitting Labour MP who was introducing Arthur Davidson, great fun and very entertaining, the repartee was great

Re: Would AccyWebbers like a Parliamentary hustings?
No problem. But where is the location and how much will the venue cost to hire? However much, we can only assume that the taxpayer will not be left to foot the bill for what is otherwise an attempt by various individuals to obtain nice, cushy well paid employment for the next five years. I would assume therefore, that their sponsoring organisations - the UNITE union for Labour and Lord Ashcroft for the Tories, togeather with the usual motley collection of oddball pressure groups for the Lib-Dems - will be prepared to financially underwrite this exercise. If not, forget it.

I think AccyWeb should organise a debate each year. This is our Borough and it is important. |
Re: Would AccyWebbers like a Parliamentary hustings?
Why should accyweb organise a debate each year?
Accyweb isnt a political forum .. its a forum .. which is paid for by the owner and donations from members. |

Re: Would AccyWebbers like a Parliamentary hustings?
There are a small number of CIU working mens clubs still around Accy, a couple of which have 'concert' rooms big enough to hold several hundred people; Why not (with Tory/Lib-Dem counterparts) organise something in conjunction with one of these? With free admission on the door I'm quite sure at least one of 'em would jump at the chance to earn a little bit of extra beer sales income on a wet tuesday night in late April.

There are probaly lots of people, myself included, who might not be able to physically attend a bun fight in the Town Hall. I think the internet allows everyone who wants to speak, an equal voice. If 300 people turned up, and asked just one question each, and every candidate then gave their answer, the meeting would still be in progress when the ballot boxes had long been packed away. |
Re: Would AccyWebbers like a Parliamentary hustings?
Perhaps it should be organised by Hyndburn Life!
