The Koh-i-Noor, the biggest and best diamond ever found, relentlessly re-shaped by people who thought they knew how it should look in public and eventually nothing like how it originally was.

Spot on Ken, the days of great orators has long gone, mores the pity, when I started in politics in the early 60s, GE candidate spoke at public meetings, got on their soap box on the market, and knew how to play to the audience, without out prompting from the wings by spin doctors, in fact if spin doctor had been mentioned in those days we'd have thought it was a guy who mended the new type washer-spindryers:D

Hell's bells.

Your Conservative soap boxers in those days must have been mind numbingly boring, and certainly didn't know how to hold much of a crowd.

Considering the fallow period, between 1931 and 1983, when Accrington/Hyndburn didn't return a Conservative M.P.

Those poor beggars could probably have benefited from a bit of spin...or balloons, or something else eye-catching, to grab folks attention.

That's probably why there was always a massive crowd round Uncle Dick's on the market in the '60's.

It was that, or listening to some toff in a pin stripe drone on from his husting.

On the contrary Garinda, it was quite fun at both Conservative and Labour hustings, but of course that was before your time you were probably still running round with dirty jeans on and jam round your mouth:D

Oh yes, forgive me for not being politically aware until 1970, when I was five.

Though I never wore jeans as a child. Shorts being much more practical than long trousers.

Not really, it wasn't ultimately their decision. The idea was to make it fair to the main broadcasters but also reach the widest audience which is why there is a certain amount of collaboration involved between the BBC, ITV and Sky.

Don't get used to it.

hi cashie
it is truly amazing isn't it
FA cup ('cause it matters) is always terrestrial
Queen's speech the same
Party political broadcasts 'cause 'they' want everyone to know!!!
THEN - 'cause they're all in a tight corner it goes Sky where the viewing audience is a lot less - and innaccessible to the public who can't afford!!
It all boils down to one thing - and I'll think about that in a minute :(

anyway I was saying - 'they' can put FA cup on terrestrial ('cause it matters)
the Queens speech ('cause it doesn't) and party political broadcasts ('cause 'they' want everyone to hear them - but what it all boils down to is that 'they' are all in a tight corner and timing is of the essence so broadcast to the lesser ------- do they think we're stupid - anycase 'feel this' -

Absolutely, my friend. If it wasn't so serious though, it would be laughable to watch the three combatants continuing with the cabaret act that should have long ago been confined to the dustbin of history.

I would ask again: 'Where will we find the statesman with enough bottle to stand up for the rights of the UK - and for the England that I love in particular?'

Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with injecting the odd bit of humour into a thread that's got bogged down in seriousness.

It does become a little tiresome to wade through a thread, when every other post is comic chatter, or yet another unrelated YouTube clip.

Ever the pessimistic optimist, I tuned into Sky3 for the Lion Man and got the debate instead. After half an hour I gave up as, like last time, they spoke a load of political gobblegook that neither answered the questions put, nor explained what they would do if elected to office. The whole charade is nothing but a scam intended to engage the electorate in the petty squabbles of the contenders, but has so far failed on every count.

Live questions?

You're having a laugh.

Live applause might be a start.

'The rules are that an audience member asks a preselected question. Each of the leaders replies in turn for a minute, without interruption. Each then responds in turn to the others' answers for one minute, again without interruption. There can then, "on merit", be "up to four minutes" of "free debate", the only part of the proceedings which actually appears to involve the leaders talking to each other.'

'No applause or heckling will be allowed – and critically, there seems little or no provision for follow-up questions, either by the audience or the moderator.'

wasnt it the tories that made people sell tehir homes to pay for care in teh first place despite people paying NI all tehir lives and tax ?

mind you if thats the case labour havnt changed anything while they have been in power so there both just as bad

£8000 wouldnt last long either because the last time i heard how much a care home costs per week for a resident it was around the £500 mark so after a few months somone would be required to still sell tehir home and spend all tehir savings etc that they had worked all tehir lives for to leave somthing for their children.

some may not agree but i think if you need to go into a care home the govenment should pay for it and not punish people for been sensible with tehir money i just find it wrong that somone who has never worked or paid any contributions can go straight into a care home paid for by teh govenment yet somone who has been productive in society, paid NI and taxes and been sensible with their money shoudl have to resort to guessing when they will die and signing all their possesions over to tehir children 7 years before tehir death to avoid loosing everything they worked hard for paying for either care homes or loosing most of it in inheritance tax

This seven years you have discussed is not water tight now and under the present government they would take all your money. I believe your care should be free as it is in Scotland however what im trying to say is that at least paying 8.ooo means you will never after contribute anymore if it runs out in the time you need care, kind of an insurance policy so you can leave your home or income to your loved ones.

It's just a con named eugenics

Possibly you are correct on this count however i still believe that paying the 8,ooo is a small price to pay for long term care against paying possibly thousands of pounds that you have worked hard for all your life. Still believe it should be free and we should look after our elderly in this country, and when your paying 500 pounds per week it would soon eat into your hard earned money.Under this present government they would take all your money, it doesnt seem a fair system by far to me.

The inheritance factor is propounded by those who want to conceal the true causes.

Both my parents died of cancer, one related to steroid overprescribing, and the other from Sellafield radiation. I am avoiding both forms of poison.

Yes. I've been diagnosed with High blood pressure, my Father has it & also his Father had it too. It was in fact my Fathers Doctor who recommended that his offspring (Me,my Brother) should go & get tested by our relevant Doctors, Bingo ! It also appears I might well be looking forward to other delights too, lucky me !

Our lifestyles are completely different so it has nothing to do with a shared environment, that then leaves a "Hereditary" option as to the reason why I am as I am.

Well after watchings tonights offerings(Glutton fer Punishment):D thought Cameron had some pluses, but more minuses, Brown had his plusses, but less minuses, Clegg was full of problem highlights, which resumate well with knobheads, though anyone with any common, know damn well those problems. yet he was virtually devoid of solutions, in other words a bigger con man than the other 2, still by telling us the problems will please the dummies n win em a vote or two.

If that were the case, likelyhood is a hung parliment, hopefully then Brown n Cameron will get the boot, if so British politics would be a much better place.:)

They might well just scrape a national victory but not enough of one to form a majority government.

Cameron's performance tonight simply highlighted the Tory inability to answer any question.

'Yes or no?'

'Yes or no?

'Yes or no?'

Anyone remember Michael Howard and Paxman? Nothing changes.

Liam Fox was just as bad on Question Time:

AUDIENCE: Are the three main parties planning to raise VAT?

BALLS: No.

AUDIENCE: Immediately after the election? You won't raise VAT?

BALLS: We're not planning to. I answered the question as it was asked.

A smarty pants answer which didn't go down too well, funnily enough.
