I held a surgery in Rishton last week and a long-running sore point came up which I thought we'd sorted out in July but it turns out we were badly informed. To try and defend a wrong decision that wasn't really our fault would have been absolute suicide, the residents were far more appreciative of a bit of honesty that things hadn't gone according to plan.

Thanks for the karma!

Survival, perhaps, but to succeed in politics, here are three better rules.

1. Don't be afraid to admit that other people have cocked up.

2. Be able to laugh at others.

3. Tear up the rule book.

What a fool I am. These stock answers have been staring me in the face for months:

1. It's Graham Jones' fault for having two houses.

2. It's 13 years of Labour rule.

3. Look at what the previous administration got wrong.

John, as you have pointed out so often before, I have a lot to learn.

Somebody will be reporting you to a higher authority for admitting to what the Tories use instead of principles!

I heard a story from a wedding last year which had quite a few politicians present and when last orders were called the DJ asked:

'Come on ladies and gentlemen, haven't you got second homes to go to?'

It's one of those things I wish I'd thought of first.
