I'm suprised it's still in one piece!

No, hang on, thinking about it, it should be like new, when you fire off a round it's usually your foot you hit.

Obviously they thought it would make little 'difference', after the selection process had finished.

Mind you, many local Tories didn't seem that supportive, or posted much encouragement in the hope of making a difference, after poor Karen had been chosen as the Conservative candidate here in Hyndburn.

Well it was very unlikely I was going to add my support to her campaign as I didn't vote for her on a matter of principle, even though my arm was twisted to do saw, the only chance would have been if she'd have knocked on my door and even then they would have been slim to none ;)

You should always give people at least one chance.

I thought she was absolutely charming, when she came up to shake my hand whilst I was out shopping in Accy.

Though oddly, besides the handshake, she didn't thank me for all the work I did to help raise her profile locally.

After she had been so cruelly snubbed by nearly all of the Conservative supporters in Hyndburn.

No, as posted earlier, I decide which candidate is the best option on the day, after careful consideration.

Last May I voted for Graham Jones, and Peter Britcliffe.

Giving my vote to two local lads...and Accy Web members.

If the closure of the Peel Street toilets was to drive trade into the market hall, where councillors (or their family members) would benefit financially from the increased footfall, then they would have declared an interest.

Wouldn't they?

Luckily there's nothing wrong with my voice, and after explaining the whole sorry fiasco, my companion tomorrow will be eager to sign as well.

Where? There were declarations of interest at the Council meeting on 18th January, but that was over the question of Wednesday opening and two weeks before the toilets were closed.

No interests were declared at the Cabinet meeting on 8th February, nor the Resources Overview and Scrutiny meeting on 15th February, nor the Council meeting on 1st March.

I'm fairly sure that it was posted on here, that two councillors, Haworth and Britcliffe declared an interest, when there was a meeting regarding the Market Hall.

It's probably somewhere in the Market Hall refurbishment thread, and I think was in regards to the enforced Wednesday opening. So would have been last autumn.

I preume it was posted by an AW member who was present, so perhaps they'll confirm this.

If it was made elsewhere, but discussed at the Scrutiny Committee, then the declaration of interest should have been there. The minutes of the Scrutiny Committee of 15th February are clear that the Peel Street Toilets were discussed.

Cllrs Britcliffe and Pam Barton declared an interest in the debate at full council over having a vote on 6-day trading, beyond that nothing that I can recall.

The decision to close the Peel Street toilets was apparently a Cabinet decision, it has never been put to full council for debate. A quick scan of the recent Cabinet minutes should show up if Cllr Britcliffe declared a personal and prejudicial interest although I must admit that I cannot find the reference myself.

Cabinet

As has been posted before, if the closure was about saving money, a comperative study should have been carried out. Working out if closing the Market Hall or the Peel Street toilets would be most cost effective, before making any decision.

In to the equation they should also have compared which public toilet had the greatest ease of access, especially for those with mobility issues, as well as parents with buggies, and the fact that a whole section of people aren't allowed on to the balcony level of the Market Hall, because of age restrictions.

In the commercial world, a comperative study would have been the very first thing that was carried out, to decide where most savings could be found, with the least inconvenience to the people of the town.

There have been several decisions taken for which I have failed to find any form of performance standards to determine success or failure. It would be my own first action before taking any commercial decision and has stood me in good stead for 10 years.

Basic scientific principles of things such as market research are something I believe in very strongly before making decisions, particularly with public money, and it is something I will continue advocating when the council eventually shifts away from Conservative control.

Gynn has identified the point regarding a prejudicial interest in making the decision to close the toilets on Peel Street, something which in any situation would be dealt with in a serious manner.

I think it is worth asking.

A response from one of the senior executives to my question has revealed that there do not appear to be any minutes of when the decision to close Peel Street toilets was taken. It is understood that the closure was an inherent part of the plans to refurbish the Market Hall toilets.

My point about a personal and prejudicial interest has not been answered.

But what purpose do they have after they've been handed in, That's why its important to get a photo of the event otherwise there is no point what-so-ever in doing the petition in the first place, its what is seen to be done not what actually is done, been there do it got the T shirt cashy and it wasn't from gift print either:D

The move to Thursday nights and the inclusion of Graham Jones MP was apparently universally panned by the Conservatives on the basis that it would be rather harsh on The Accrington Observer reporting 6 days later and that he isn't an elected member of the council. Stuart Pike seemingly in agreement on the newspaper front if Twitter is anything to go by.

I still maintain that a concise council meeting adopting a more respectful code of conduct is of more use not only to the borough but also the councillors who are present and may not necessarily be as aware of county and national issues as is assumed.

There is nothing to hide here. Graham Jones got well in excess of 14,000 votes on his own, more than the entire Tory group and a sizeable part of the Labour group as well.

If he isn't representative of the electorate's views then I don't know who is.

In that case do away with 35 councillors why the hell do we need them.

I think it was a deliberate mistake by the Observer twitterer at the instruction of PB so he could hold them to it. It should have said 0% increase but again we already knew that because the government said so :)

Apparently there will be something in the Observer this week, and the toilets will be open again full time from next Monday :)

Here's the article for anybody who wants to read it.

The last couple of lines puzzle me

It will now cost everyone in the district an awful lot of money just to spend a penny. There is plenty of money to do it without hitting every ward.”
If there's plenty of money to do it, why did they shut them in the first place

Well done Dave for leading the fight, so that people once again have a pot to pee in.

Now that's achieved, shall we start another Facebook Campaign?

Heated seats?

Piped music?

Potpourri?

Free refreshments available in there, courtesy of Coffee Beanz?

:D

An interesting quote from the Wizard of Ossy in the Observer. However, I do wonder if the local rag may have made another error in it's typography. Surely the third from last word in Britcliffe's statement should begin with a 'S', not a 'H'?

Why's that, John? Didn't you find it as comfortable as schoolchildren have over the past 100 years?

Just been sent this photo by a mate, will put it to the council as an idea:

I was actually referring to Izal toilet paper which was greasy and abrasive and possibly the least suitable material for cleaning body parts that it is possible to come up with.

That is one part of my childhood that I do not look back on fondly.

Funny you should mention Izal Ken. Izal was once produced in Ossy, by a firm called Hygiene Supplies, the Firm was owned by a chap called Herbert Walsh and the factory was on Stonebridge Lane, my mother worked their until the place shut in I would think the mid sixties when the soft toilet paper was beginning to take off and with this guy being in his 70s he decided to close down as he could afford the new machinery that was needed to compete in the new market although Izal was still being used in Hospitals until I would think the 90s, Mind you Izal wasn't the only toilet tissue made by that firm I think the must have made around 70 different rolls of Toilet paper, well the same paper with different labels, at one time they employed about 25 women and 2 men

Soft loo roll only took off round here when you didn't have to run down the backyard to the long-drop, or the tippler.

Our damp weather conditions may have been good for working cotton, but was no good for tissue kept in an outside privy.

Unlike the impervious Izal, which remained hard and scratchy whatever the weather.
