Re: 2011 Census
Don't see what all the fuss is about , the same info about you can no doubt be geaned from various other sources, mine's filled in. Think about the Domesday Book and all the info that people have learned from that, it was essentially the same thing, and if you are of a religious bent, wasn't the census the reason that Joseph and Mary had to travel to Bethlehem?
Been around a good long while. |

Re: 2011 Census
I think that in biblical times it was more of a head count than anything else Lindsay.
I think that many people are sort of programmed to accept the asking of intrusive questions......why does anyone need to know if I have central heating, or how many bedrooms I have....or for that matter what I did as a profession(that is in the past and could be gleaned from the census which was taken 10yrs ago and the 10 yrs before that). All of this info could be obtained without asking me one single question. I also object to the fact that although we have been given assurances that info won't be divulged(wanna bet) the statistical graphs will be shared with all 26 EU members and the US. Lockheed Martin who have been given the contract to process the info have subcontracted work out to Edexel.......and another company(whose name escapes me for the moment) they(Edexel) do not have a good track record in either processing statistics or keeping the information secure. |

I think I might well heed what Margaret R posted.
"This questionnaire has been completed to the best of my knowledge and belief." At the time I fill in the more nosey bits, I'll do it in the belief that I'm a simpleton. I might even have pulled an imaginary friend that night. |

Re: 2011 Census
I think it's all part of the control of it's people attitude the UK's government seems to want over everything. The last time anything in this vein happened in Germany was in 1987 & that was after reassessing the outcry of the public against proposed surveys planned for 1980 & 1983.
There is apparently something planned for May this year & it is to involve a random selection of the populace. The reliance on records & information already held will be the main content of the census here & nowhere near as impertinent, invasive or intrusive as the UK Census looks to be. http://www.google.de/url?sa=t&source...vvP5mA&cad=rja |

Re: 2011 Census
John, we don't make it intrusive...the ONS makes it intrusive.
We sleepwalk into giving away private information that can be used/misused if it fell into the wrong hands......let me see, what information would someone need to assume my identity? Yes, all of it that is on the census form......including stuff that would confirm my identity.......about the only thing that is left off are my bank details...but hey come the next census, if there is one, they might want those too. |

Re: 2011 Census
Just filled it in online, what I found strange was, whenever I make a purchase or am dealing with a confidential site, the browser usually jumps up with a message telling me I'm going to a secure site.
So far as the Census, nothing appeared, so, to whomsoever now has all my details please use them carefully, I would hate it if you ended up having to pay my debts. |

i was out on the street talking to a neigbour when she knocked on my door so i just shouted over that i had nipped out .She then had a natter with me and my neighbour while she waited for me to get back but gave up after 5 mins when i didnt end up getting back as soon as we thought i would. i didnt fancy telling her i accidently threw the form away with all the other junk mail that gets shoved through my door:) at least the poor lass got a 5 min breather as its been too nice today to go around knocking on doors :) |

The silly questions were the language and ethnic origin questions. To them, I gave them 'strange' answers. I wonder if the results will show;) Main language - ESP (I am empathic) Ethnic origin - human/Atlantean hybrid (how will they prove otherwise;)) I have no religion and said so - the people who put 'Jedi' at the last census had no 'comeback' so I don't expect any from my unusual answers. |

Re: 2011 Census
I would have loved to have chucked it in the bin...but himself didn't really want to be forking out £1000 for a fine.......however, as head of the household he should have filled it in....but filling in forms is just not his forte.....so I was 'volunteered' for the job........I might have been truthful, then again I might not.(I haven't outgrown all of my teen rebelliousness - and some of the questions seemed not to have any relevance to what future generations of genealogists will want to know about me)
1 million households did not fill in the census form at the last census.....I don't recall hearing of anyone being fined. |

Re: 2011 Census
I have no problem with filling in forms, I have been doing it for a large part of my life.....and it wasn't the time angle of the filling in which was the problem, after all if I could find time to go to work, then I could find time to fill in this form.
It had more questions on it than previous years forms and some of them seemed to have little or no relevance to anything. Now don't go asking me which ones they were because I have deleted them from my hard drive(my brain).....and if they pull up my form for some of the (maybe) less than truthful answers, then I will deny all knowledge of them........anyway it was himself who signed the front page.....and HE didn't check my answers. They say that this may be the last census, but I'm not sure it will, and I feel we are constantly being told to do things, by governments, that will be good for us, because it will let them know what we as a society need! Don't be daft....they know we need jobs, then know we need medical and social care, they know we need towns and cities with suitable infrastructure to support those needs. And.....this is the crux, they should know how many of us there are in this country. You have to register births, marriages and deaths. Marriages do not matter much, since many people these days do not bother with such a formality. The problem for governments arose when they stopped checking who was coming into the country....illegal immigrants, but it is still going to be a problem because such like these folk won't have filled in a census form will they. I was taught to be questioning, to seek out information and not take everything on face value....that many people have their own agenda when asking you to do something, and that they might tell you it was to improve things for myself if I did what they wanted......this is especially true of government(whatever persuasion), their agenda is always different to what they would have us believe. |
Re: 2011 Census
Initially I didn't fill it in. Then this bloke came round, I saw him in the street and he wore a Census T-shirt, so I figured he was working for them. I asked him and got talking to him - this prompted me to fill it out! I then filled it in - the main question that made me wonder was the name of the employer or last employer! I filled it in but I thought "why do they want to know this?" Everything else was nothing that bad!
