2011 Census
Mine has just arrived and it's epic, i'm sure it's a lot bigger than the last one, i never realised it is compulsary to fill it in either, you can be fined if you don't do it (or so it says)
i don't mind doing it because it's building a history for future generations, if we didn't fill it in we may aswell never have existed, we'd not be able to find our ancestors if we didn't fill them in |
Re: 2011 Census
Mine came today too.
Using a pen, to fill it in? Wish me luck. :D |
Re: 2011 Census
Except, Flashy, that this might be the last one.
It is a very expensive/inefficient way to collect information......much of which may be of very little value. There are some questions which I am happy to complete, but there are others which are intrusive and I can't see the point in them...they just seem nosey. The government already have rafts of information about every one of us......which could all be collated without too much effort. I haven't got my form yet, but Ma has got hers and she is full of trepidation about filling it in.......84, poor eyesight and feels that she really doesn't want to be bothered. |
Re: 2011 Census
i can see what you mean Marg, info on where we live, who lives with us, what job we do, how many children we have should really be enough, thats all we look for when we do a family tree, i haven't fully looked through it yet though, i can't see the point in 'who stayed at your house on March 27th' though....i hope no one sends it back before the 27th or they will probably send it right back and ask you if you are psychic
|
Re: 2011 Census
The fines for refusing completion of this document could be up to £1000.....this didn't deter 1.5 million households from not completing the last census........I haven't yet been able to find out how many of these were subject to legal intervention.
I am sure that I read somewhere that the information is being correlated by a US company, and that the EU would have access to the info......but looking at the website of the ONS, it says that it will be illegal for information from census forms to be used by anyone, either in the UK or outside the UK......and I know that it would probably be difficult for anyone to trace my own personal form......however, I still don't like to give personal/private information that is of no real use to anyone. You should be able to put MYOB to questions that you consider to be intrusive, and of no value when commissioning infrastructure or services. |
Re: 2011 Census
I cant imagine that everyone will fill this in. A lot of people cant read or write so how would they manage. Its a bit long and drawn out.

Haven't got mine .. mustn't exist.:(
Moan, moan, moan .. just fill it in ... helps the Government to deal with housing, jobs, health, etc., where money is needed most ... ancestry is just a bonus. Fill it in very clearly. Years past, lots of the enumerators spelling of some the names was lost in the translation of their fancy writing. Think will be very difficult for our off springs to find out their true past, what with no marriages, multiple marriages, children with lots of varying fathers, step-children, single mothers, etc. So, if you get a minute, write it all down now for them. They will thank you posthumously.:) |

Re: 2011 Census
The census return has arrived.
Information sheet starts. You need to complete your answers in English or Welsh, but we can supply a copy of the questions in your own language to help you. It then goes on the list 57 languages, helplines, and websites. If the recipients of the census return have read all that, why do they need a translation. If they can't read it, what the ell are they doing here. Retlaw. |

After a lot more digging, I have found that the ONS has awarded the 150 million pound contract to the American arms company - Lockheed-Martin. The information collected is supposed to be confidential.......and if you look at the Census website, it tells us all very reassuringly that it is illegal for the information to be used outside the UK......but my digging has revealed that we are obliged to share the collected information with all 26 members of the EU and the US......now forgive me Kate if it sounds like I am moaning, but what on earth has it to do with the US?(or the EU for that matter...other than finding a way to screw more money out of us for some damn thing or other) I cannot see this information remaining confidential for very long with so many countries having access to it. |

Re: 2011 Census
I got mine today - I haven't opened it yet.
I have looked on line, and IF I decide to fill it in I will do it on line. There is a body of resistance brewing both to the intrusive nature of the questions and the weapons dealer yankee company who has been given the job. Some forums are coming up with novel ways to avoid answering. This one is amusing :D A friend of mine has a different approach: Good people - I draw your attention to the Declaration:- "This questionnaire has been completed to the best of my knowledge and belief." ...Now read it again - slowly. Nowhere does it mention 'accurately' , 'factually' , 'honestly' nor 'truthfully'. In fact all it does is declare that you believe the form to have been completed. I intend to have fun with this. Once you acknowledge that subjective 'belief' is acceptable then the whole thing is wide open. Religion has been getting away with the 'belief' defence for all of history. Whoever drafted the form should be taken to task because it should have read "This questionnaire has been completed truthfully and accurately to the best of my knowledge." then the line "You could face a fine if you do not participate or provide false information." would have some meaning. I believe that the occupier of this house was orbiting Jupiter on a hoverboard on the day of the census. |

Re: 2011 Census
They cant make it any clearer about not posting before 27th???
Daft begger! :D |
Re: 2011 Census
Perhaps that person is going to be out of the country on the 27th of March.
A couple of my friends leave for a three month visit to their son in Australia, they sought advice about what to do with their census form, and were told to fill it in and post it before they go. Also, you can fill in your census online right now. If they didn't want you to do it then they wouldn't activate the website to do this until the 27th of March. If you already know the information is going to be correct on that date, I don't see what the problem is in filling it in early. The vast majority of us live lives of habit and not much will change between now and then........even if we win the lottery! |

Re: 2011 Census
Margaret, that is an obscene amount of money....but hey, maybe the government will recoup some of it when the info hits the big wide world........and I don't mean in a hundred years either.

Re: 2011 Census
Here's another estimate of the cost. As this was in October 2008 no doubt it has risen since then.
Eric Pickles uncovers cost of 2011 Census As National Statistician I have been asked to reply to your recent question asking what the estimated total cost to the public purse is of the 2011 Census, and how much has been spent to date on trials prior to that Census. (230808) On the basis of present planning assumptions, the cost of the 2011 Census in England and Wales over the period 2005-2016 is currently estimated to be around £487 million. |
Re: 2011 Census
The census, from what I have read, plays an important part of future planing in every aspect of life, health education housing everything that effects our everyday lives, well it has been taking place for a long time, but one would think that forward planning is more important than ever before
|
Re: 2011 Census
While I accept that John, there are some questions which just seem nosey, but nosey in a controlling sort of way.
Lots of this information the government already has on file about us......they know from Council Tax records what type of house we live in, from the records of the DVLA, whether we drive or not. From DWP they know we are pensioners, and from the same source they will have records of our past employment. The companies given the job of safeguarding this info (remember it is supposed to be confidential for 100 years) have a very poor track record of keeping sensitive information safe....and the final sting is that regardless of what the ONS site says we are obliged to share this info with all 26 members of the EU and the US. If I thought I could get away with putting my copy in the bin.......I would do it(except, himself would probably fish it out.....but it is me who would fill it in). |

Re: 2011 Census
I agree with Margaret.
The purpose of a census is to count heads. Period. In the past, any additional questions asked were of a simple nature, limited to such things as age, sex, place of birth and occupation. These days, the main purpose appears to be identifying status and income....so that the latter can be redistributed at the whim of government. Just as in England, the U.S. also threatens a penalty for failure to complete a census form. The only question I ever answer is to list the number of persons in my household. Everything else is left blank....and I have never been challenged on this by any government employee. |
