Sorry Cashy, thought it was rhetorical!

There are at least two candidates for Conservative leader that I would approve of and I suspect the rest of the Labour group would too but I fear it's unlikely to happen anytime soon. Speaking personally, if my group leader conducted himself in the same manner as Cllr Britcliffe I would have either gone independent or abandoned politics altogether.

Fortunately, Miles Parkinson is about as far from that as you're likely to get.

The Lancashire Telegraph have run a short story on it:

Cashy...I'm sure you do know really....but if you don't.....Rhetorical is a figure of speech posed in the form of a question...but with no expectation of an answer.(I hope I have got that right)

Fortunately, I have never known anything different in the Labour group but I have seen enough in the chamber since before being elected to be extremely grateful that we now have a Leader of the Council who speaks in a very measured way and doesn't go for the sensational angle in order to get his point across.

Local politics really doesn't have room for the pantomime performances of the past.

Whilst the Daily Mail ran a long story, featuring Hyndburn's councillors.

Perhaps that could be the first written question at the next Council meeting.

Well this thread is now 86 posts long I'm waiting for a thread of similar length not about the antics (which have been documented on here for years) of the previous leader, but just what is being done to improve things now there is new management at HBC, as I've said before talking is cheap in opposition.

I can answer that one for you, it's the councillors who pay, there is no cost to the taxpayer.

Libel cases are tiresome, I can't say it's something I'd file against someone unless it was pretty serious.

John, we're five weeks into the new administration. How much of a difference do you think it's possible to make in that time? Your own experience should tell you that it takes longer than that simply to ask for a written report and have a meeting to decide on the outcome.

Several things are being looked at and the framework was in place before we even took control so that we could hit the ground running but there was never any pretence that Hyndburn would become a gleaming vista overnight.

On a very superficial level, council meetings have been cleaned up so that they are less abrasive and for the first time in my tenure that I can remember we were finished before 10.00pm last Thursday. This didn't stop Cllr Britcliffe from commenting just after 9.30pm on the lateness of the hour when Graham Jones was speaking.

Enforcement of unsightly properties is being scaled up, allowances have been slashed to the tune of £23,000 already (and that figure will rise since meal claims now require a receipt) and trips to conferences that incur a cost to the council have been suspended indefinitely. On a personal level, in Rishton we have now confirmed the demolition of a row of unsightly derelicts which have dragged an area down for 10 years and the council will be recouping that money from the owners. The council is not there to hand out money simply when people come a-knocking and all that has been abolished as well.

Other 'good news' will be reported to the public when something concrete has been put in place, not some hypothetical votewinner which may never happen or figure which has been plucked out of the air in order to sound good.

Just surprising how propaganda was published daily for 18 months prior to May;)
