I can understand where you are coming from Margaret but I personally think it's better than all the alternatives that could be used to reach a verdict. And yes I know juries can be "got at" but less of a chance of a dodgy verdict than the old boys network and all that entails.
I also like the considerations of the victims statements by the judge when looking at sentencing.

If the statue on the Old Bailey is anything to go by justice isn't blindfolded (may be blind though - can't really tell).

Maybe that's why she looked stunned when she was cleared of the charge of authorising illegal payments to public officials.

I was thinking purely of this case......and I wasn't suggesting that the jury had been 'got at'...more along the lines that the case had been played out so that the jury had doubts planted(evidence can be given in ways that mean there is doubt rather than certainty in their minds and I am pretty sure she would have had some very competent defence lawyer....maybe the prosecution didn't try too hard either on the instructions from people in high places, maybe there was collusion between the two - again instructed by the same elite. We won't ever know).....and if there is a shadow of a doubt then you cannot return any verdict other than 'not guilty'.
It has to be admitted that she has friends in high places and that she has admitted to having done some very dubious things to get 'news' stories...like paying the police for information.
Not the actions of someone with integrity.

I think that if this had been you or me we would be looking at a long time in the slammer.

Yes C, one wonders why very senior and deeply corrupt police officers, directly involved with selling information to the Media, all seem to have slithered away.Maybe to keep full pension rights intact?

along similar lines, if he was on trial for telling porkies, he would be given the benefit of the doubt, after all he's only doing it to keep his job, unlike Blair and his WMD lies that would have him convicted for leading us into an illegal war.
Hang on, was it a war, or were we just prospecting for oil?
Obviously if we were just prospecting then even he would get off, after all we know there are fatilities in any industry.

Why the promise of an apology when Coulson was arrested?
because he knew all along what a rat Coulson was and he privately knew from confidential GCHQ records that his texts would incriminate him

It took the trial weeks to find out he was full of it.
Surely DC already found that out himself.
I'd call Cameron something only he doesn't have the warmth or the depth to justify using it
Your chickens are coming home to roost DC.

Re: News of the World Mobile Phone Hacking

isnt this the case where david cameron refused to hand over emails between him and brooks

we can only assume what wa sin the emails but my money is that they contained something crooked or he wouldnt have had any problem with handing them over especially in a case with so much media attention and public interest

as usual though the greatest ally of a politition is time and they know that they can be as devious and under handed as they like because the public forget because if the public didnt forget half if not most of the MPs in tehir seats today wouldnt be

Re: News of the World Mobile Phone Hacking

I think Rebekah Brooks must be one hell of an actress, highly intelligent and as wily as a fox to slither out of all this. She must be very charismatic to have convinced the jury she wasn't guilty. She worked her way up from the bottom of the pile to become editor and that gives a bit of an insight in to her personality. Wouldn't fancy Muhammed Ali's chances (in his prime) in a fight with her. Hard as bloody nails.

Re: News of the World Mobile Phone Hacking

This trial failed - which I believe it has in essence (only one convicted who hadn't already plead guilty) - because the defence was funded by Rupert Murdoch and had unlimited millions to throw at fancy lawyers whereas the prosecution had to make do with what they could get on the cheap.

As the Guardian puts it:
"Rupert Murdoch’s money flooded that courtroom. It flowed into the defence of Rebekah Brooks, because he backed her; and to the defence of Andy Coulson, because Coulson had sued and forced him to pay. Lawyers and court reporters who spend their working lives at the Old Bailey agreed they had never seen anything like it, this multimillion-pound Rolls-Royce engine purring through the proceedings. Soon we found ourselves watching the power of the private purse knocking six bells out of the underfunded public sector."

Margaret Pilkington 26-06-2014 12:07

Re: News of the World Mobile Phone Hacking

Isn't that similar to what I said in post 305?
It isn't often that I agree with the Guardian....I suppose the exception tests the rule.

Re: News of the World Mobile Phone Hacking

Dodgy Dave went on TV claiming to apologise for Coulson, but to me, it sounded like Dave was just trying to save his own skin by throwing Andy Coulson under the bus so to speak.
I would say its justice 'half served' (but it's more like 1%).
There should be a prosecutions and investigations into all the other dodgy characters who closed the ranks to avoid prosecution.
Good old 'British justice' bought once again.

Se we the public had our millions wasted because the underfunded public sector didn't spend enough of out money. Ironic or what?

Written by the newspaper that should have been brought up on charges for printing stolen secret documents but for some reason haven't yet

Appears they think listening to voice mails of people who didn't change the pin from 1234 is more serious than risking the lives of operatives by printing stolen secret documents!

You got inside info on this..or are you just making a supposition based on rival newspaper smears, political spin and USA posturing?

In a case of public interest reporting..publication of personal phone calls between royals, film stars and dead people is a lot different than publication of the machinations of our publicly elected officials exceeding their mandate.

Personally I don't care how many times Prince Harry shows his backside to strippers, but I do care if the prime minister of my country declares an illegal war because of a phone call to a US crony and tries to cover it up.

The point was about printing illegally obtained stories, theft of phone calls and theft of documents.
