Exactly, its easy to make assumptions about what happened, for all we know it could have been a fault with the car.

Im with you on this one Phil, at 77 years of age her reactions are a lot slower than of someone 30, 40 etc years younger, what if someone was walking past at the time, they could have been pinned under the car in the water with her, when someone reaches 75 they have to renew their licence with DVLA, it should then be an automatic ban if they have any accidents. Before you all start jumping on the bandwagon I doubt very much there was anything wrong with the car, and are we all forgetting the tragic accident that killed Jackie Bloomer & her 18 month old son, again an elderly driver (89 yrs old) who had a heart attack at the wheel.

So you think it is fair to remove the licence of someone purely on grounds of age?

And just because you doubt there were any faults with the car doesn't mean there weren't. I am sure the situation will be fully investigated.

Older drivers usually have more experience. drive within speed limits, and know their limitations.

This lady may never return to driving again.......she may be put off by the trauma she has gone through.

Every case should be judged on its own merits...and by people who know the full facts.
You will be this age yourself one day...if you are lucky enough.

And I haven't forgotten Jackie Bloomer and her son. It was a tragic accident...could not be forseen...she happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Jackie Bloomer accident is exactly what I mean. How many times do hear on the news that a pensioner has driven the wrong way down the motorway?

In 2006 I came off my scooter because a pensioner was driving so slowly I was trying to over take her but couldn't quite execute the move. I ended up over taking her on my backside.

It won't be long before my father hands in his licence because his eyesight it getting worse and won't drive in the dark because of the other drivers headlights being too bright.

You should have you license removed for making a dangerous manoeuvre.
You should not have tried to pass if you did not have enough space.

I cant believe anyone would be stupid enough to think that was the driver of the cars fault and not yours :D:D:D

A lot less than you hear about young drivers causing accidents.

There is nothing wrong with handing in your licence if you feel you are no longer fit to drive. There is something wrong with being told ' you are over 75...time to hand in your licence'
How often do we hear of boy racers killing their friends? How often do we hear of younger people driving under the influence of alcohol? The answer to both of those questions is far more often than we hear of incidents like the Jackie Bloomer one...and the other incidents you quoted.

As for your accident, it seems you were in the wrong...you tried to overtake her but couldn't...why was that then...maybe it was because you made an error of judgement in trying to overtake in a place that was not safe....but you want the pensioner off the road for this.
I am a pensioner........I have had one accident in 35 years of driving......no penalty points.......many pensioners who still drive, do so because they want to retain some independence.
As we get older and our families move away we can become very isolated...but you want to increase our isolation....prevent us from being able to go out and about. It sometimes seems that we 'oldies' have lived too long for you young folk...you would like us out of the way....it says something for civilzation doesn't it?
I hope you live long enough to remember these words of yours.

Might be a good idea if you backed out now!
Coming off your scooter because someone was going too slow? That takes some doing. Heaven knows what you'll be like when YOU'RE 75.

This simply proves what some of us have been saying for years - shopping at ASDA is bad for your health. So don't go there; use the market instead.
