Water Main Burst
Its been on the North West News this morning that there's been a major mains burst affecting Accrington and Blackburn, at first it said 10,000 homes could be affected, but the last I heard it had been reevaluated to a few hundred. Everything seems to be okay where I am, but I've filled a pan with a bit extra to make sure

Re: Water Main Burst
Thanks for the warning.
Have run some water, just in case. BBC News - Burst water main disrupts supply in Blackburn |
Re: Water Main Burst
The water pressure is very low, but managed to fill a couple of bottles.
Thanks for the warning Jaysay, have passed it on to a few people. Back to bathing in asses's milk for me. http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/w...tian/tut05.gif |
Re: Water Main Burst
Thank you for the warning Jaysay, I'm off to fill the kettle:D

Re: Water Main Burst
Thanks for the warning John. We're Springhill and it's definitely off here.
|
Re: Water Main Burst
To be honest I heard it about 7am if I hadn't been still half asleep I should have put the warning on here earlier, must keep it in mind next time anything like that happens

Just been up to see her and told her off for not telling me..........I could have taken some water up for her. Back on now...well sort of.......just a trickle. |
Re: Water Main Burst

|
Re: Water Main Burst

|
Re: Water Main Burst

Thats a load of bull, we get our water from Dean Clough in Gt Harwood & from Mitchels, we used to be lucky in that if either supply was affected, we got water from the other, now since they've installed new by pass valves, round our are two years ago, we get nowt. Retlaw |
Re: Water Main Burst
Just checked with Fire Station & watter buard did'nt even inform them that there was a burst, thats criminal. From what they now know the burts is somewhere near Martholme Grane, even a burst there, should'nt affect the West of Accrington or Blackburn.

Re: Water Main Burst
Explains why the water pressure is so low at work. Took me ages to fill the kettle up this morning!!
|
Re: Water Main Burst
United Utilities are laughingly saying that only a few hundred houses are affected. I think they're either hopeful or telling porkies, just because they've only had 150 complaints.
I know for a fact that the area is a really big area that is affected because I know people all around Ossy and Acc who are affected. Just because we haven't all bothered complaining doesn't mean we're not sat here with no water - we just know they're on the case and there's no point in telling them. |

Re: Water Main Burst
Ok...cheers Bernie...I spoke to my mum this morning (8.30) when I read the news and she said the taps were running fine, so the pressure must have dropped off. Any idea on when there will be full restoration?

Well my water has been okay all day, hasn't even lost power, the message was being put out on Northern TV news from 7am, or even earlier
|
Re: Water Main Burst
If anyone needs any and can get to me (Peel Park area) we have water, will happily fill bottles/containers up. PM me for address.
Just been informed by sister in law in Church that Asda and Lidl have sold out of all water except tiny "sportcap" style bottles. |
Re: Water Main Burst
Still off here.
Thanks to Jaysay's warning should have enough for my much needed morning coffee. If not, will have to do a Sarah Miles. Since I'm already feeling decidedly grubby. http://freesmileyface.net/smiley/drinks/coffee.gif |
Re: Water Main Burst
I finally got to speak to representative from United Utilities and she told me the bottled water had run out at the two sites near Great Harwood and there are no other places in the area where water was being supplied in bottles. I got the usual apology and told that they were working hard to restore the water and if I bought bottled water and sent the receipt to United Utilities they would refund the money.
I am managing to flush the toilet with water from my outside water butt and quenching my thirst with my stock of Stella, I wonder if they will pay for that. The dirty plates are piling up in the sink and I am not looking forward to washing up when the supply is restored. |
Re: Water Main Burst
I managed to get some from Haslingden Tesco, they still had 5l bottles left.:D

Re: Water Main Burst
Drought, the sun beating down on baked earth.
We'll probably have Michael Buerk and Kate Adie turn up tomorrow with film crews. That's fine, as long as Bob Geldof and Bono don't record a charity single. |

As for some streets being off & others on, looks like some over zealous engineers have been shutting valves off that didn't need touching, Accrinton from the West of Manchester Rd, from Nuttall St to Bash gets its water from Mitchells, via Rising Bridge, so somebodies cocked up. Retlaw. |
Re: Water Main Burst
Ma lives up Riley's Hill and they have had no water since this morning.........I think the dribble that came out of the tap when we were there was probably just what was in the pipes.
She has a well with spring water in her cellar, but I wouldn't like to drink it.......I suppose it would be alright for washing your feet in...as long as you don't mind sharing with the frogs. |

Just thought I would keep you all updated for when you wake up.
This is a update @ 04:14am from U.U website, Update @ 04.11 - Repairs are continuing to the main on Burnley Road. Further supplies of bottled water have now been delivered to the car park at Tesco Supermarket Eagle Street Accrington town centre for customers to collect. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience As soon as your up, get dressed and down to Tesco before this water runs out aswell. :( |
Re: Water Main Burst
We had no Water yesterday for a while, then it went to a trickle and was very brown,
we now have clear running water but not quite up to pressure but should be OK now. If UU think i am trailing all the way to Tesco car park for a few bottles of water to lug all the way home and give myself another heart attack they can think again they should have gone round the area that's affected with bottled water. useless lot they could not water the beer down in a brewery (we did have to buy 2 bottles of water from the "one shop" at the top of our street ) just to keep us going. |
Re: Water Main Burst
My mum is 84....and if she could get one of these 5 ltr bottles she would not be able to lift it or even open the top.
I am taking her some 1litre bottles of tap water up today with the tops loosened. |
Re: Water Main Burst
Still off here.
Since I'm nowhere near the burst, seems odd that random areas still have no water at all. You'd think we could all get some, but at a very low pressure. A real pain in the proverbial now. |
Re: Water Main Burst
Tescos car park
12 X 2L bottles each. Only 2 vans there. Get there quick |
Re: Water Main Burst
STILL no hot water in me house!!!!, The tank is empty!!!!.
|
Re: Water Main Burst
i have water im up ossy so if anyone wants to get their bottles refilled pm me ok ...mez
|
Re: Water Main Burst
United Utilities have just delivered emergency sachets of dried H2O.
Just add water, and we can make up to 5 litres of reconstituted water. |
Re: Water Main Burst
Quote:
Eeew .. where you get them from ? :rofl38: Think there is enough (probably tepid) water in the tank for a stand up wash this morning. Takes longer than a shower though and won't be able to wash my hair. Still, will muddle through. Think my friend where I work down Pot House Lane has still got water, so things not too bad, even though I had to resort to cutting open the water bottles. Couldn't get my McDonalds last night after a meeting. Was closed. |

To open bottles use the inside upright of an open door as a clamp,Trap bottle top and turn.:)

Just at Tesco now, U.U have run out of water!, fella said probs been the pipe that burst was an old glass reinforced plastic pipe (think I got that right) and they have had to have fittings specially made to connect new pipe to it. Said its slowly coming back on now & should be up to full pressure in next couple hours.
|
Re: Water Main Burst
UU are pathetic. They should have been taking the water the those without and not expect them to go and collect. Many people cant go and collect it.

Re: Water Main Burst
Some of you may be pleased to know that the CEO of United Utilities, and the man ultimately responsible for the chaos and gross ineptness resulting from this incident, was last year paid £800,000 salary plus a bonus of £1million. But please don't be too hard on him - water supply in the North West is a highly competitive market, with UU up against the likes of Tesco, Asda and numerous corner shops. So no doubt he deserves every penny.
|
Re: Water Main Burst
I've just had a phone call from United Utilities after contacting them earlier this morning . The lady said that the damage is to the most essential part of the main , whatever that is . She said they are trying to get the water flowing now .
According to Radio Lancashire there was supposed to be a tanker at the top of the street on Richmond Rd/Rawson Avenue junction at 9a.m. It's now after 11a.m. and no sign of one . Probably been hijacked on the way up . |

I( have just been to Tesco where there is lorry loaded with bottled water, they are giving out 12 bottles per person.
TV camera is there and about five police men. I put my bottles in the car and across from me there was a Vauxhall Zafira with about ten packs in it and what looked like five people from the same family unloading more packs of water into the car. Maybe they have a shop off Blackburn road and are cashing in on the crisis. |
