Water Main Burst

Its been on the North West News this morning that there's been a major mains burst affecting Accrington and Blackburn, at first it said 10,000 homes could be affected, but the last I heard it had been reevaluated to a few hundred. Everything seems to be okay where I am, but I've filled a pan with a bit extra to make sure

Thanks for the warning.

Have run some water, just in case.

The water pressure is very low, but managed to fill a couple of bottles.

Thanks for the warning Jaysay, have passed it on to a few people.

Back to bathing in asses's milk for me.

Yes, Ma had to do her ablutions this morning with Baby wipes.......unable to have her morning cuppa....had soda water instead.

Just been up to see her and told her off for not telling me..........I could have taken some water up for her.
Back on now...well sort of.......just a trickle.

Can't get no joy from watter buard, the recorded message quotes major burst in Burnley Rd, most of Accrington, Blackburn & Burnley supplies affected.
Thats a load of bull, we get our water from Dean Clough in Gt Harwood & from Mitchels, we used to be lucky in that if either supply was affected, we got water from the other, now since they've installed new by pass valves, round our are two years ago, we get nowt.

Retlaw 28-09-2011 11:57

Re: Water Main Burst

Just checked with Fire Station & watter buard did'nt even inform them that there was a burst, thats criminal. From what they now know the burts is somewhere near Martholme Grane, even a burst there, should'nt affect the West of Accrington or Blackburn.

That is the logic of headteachers, we have no water in school and most of our kids live locally so we will send them home where they have no water either :D:D

United Utilities are laughingly saying that only a few hundred houses are affected. I think they're either hopeful or telling porkies, just because they've only had 150 complaints.

I know for a fact that the area is a really big area that is affected because I know people all around Ossy and Acc who are affected. Just because we haven't all bothered complaining doesn't mean we're not sat here with no water - we just know they're on the case and there's no point in telling them.

My office off Blackburn Road closed at lunchtime for health and safety reasons (couldn't flush toilets or wash hands etc) so I'm working from home, no problem here but my daughter's is off up Dill Hall Lane.

I would assume this would now be a big repair job on the ring main. The supplier is United Utilities, if I recall rightly. Has there been any announcements on Radio Lancs, or anyone coming round with a broadcasting van?

The LT is not updating on the latest news.

I finally got to speak to representative from United Utilities and she told me the bottled water had run out at the two sites near Great Harwood and there are no other places in the area where water was being supplied in bottles. I got the usual apology and told that they were working hard to restore the water and if I bought bottled water and sent the receipt to United Utilities they would refund the money.

I am managing to flush the toilet with water from my outside water butt and quenching my thirst with my stock of Stella, I wonder if they will pay for that. The dirty plates are piling up in the sink and I am not looking forward to washing up when the supply is restored.

Bog off you thats usery you little villan.
As for some streets being off & others on, looks like some over zealous engineers have been shutting valves off that didn't need touching, Accrinton from the West of Manchester Rd, from Nuttall St to Bash gets its water from Mitchells, via Rising Bridge, so somebodies cocked up.

Ma lives up Riley's Hill and they have had no water since this morning.........I think the dribble that came out of the tap when we were there was probably just what was in the pipes.
She has a well with spring water in her cellar, but I wouldn't like to drink it.......I suppose it would be alright for washing your feet in...as long as you don't mind sharing with the frogs.

We had no Water yesterday for a while, then it went to a trickle and was very brown,
we now have clear running water but not quite up to pressure but should be OK now.
If UU think i am trailing all the way to Tesco car park for a few bottles of water to lug all the way home and give myself another heart attack they can think again they should have gone round the area that's affected with bottled water.
useless lot
they could not water the beer down in a brewery

Eeew .. where you get them from ? :rofl38:

Think there is enough (probably tepid) water in the tank for a stand up wash this morning.
Takes longer than a shower though and won't be able to wash my hair. Still, will muddle through.

Think my friend where I work down Pot House Lane has still got water, so things not too bad, even though I had to resort to cutting open the water bottles.

Some of you may be pleased to know that the CEO of United Utilities, and the man ultimately responsible for the chaos and gross ineptness resulting from this incident, was last year paid £800,000 salary plus a bonus of £1million. But please don't be too hard on him - water supply in the North West is a highly competitive market, with UU up against the likes of Tesco, Asda and numerous corner shops. So no doubt he deserves every penny.

Re: Water Main Burst

I've just had a phone call from United Utilities after contacting them earlier this morning . The lady said that the damage is to the most essential part of the main , whatever that is . She said they are trying to get the water flowing now .

According to Radio Lancashire there was supposed to be a tanker at the top of the street on Richmond Rd/Rawson Avenue junction at 9a.m. It's now after 11a.m. and no sign of one .
Probably been hijacked on the way up .

I( have just been to Tesco where there is lorry loaded with bottled water, they are giving out 12 bottles per person.

TV camera is there and about five police men.

I put my bottles in the car and across from me there was a Vauxhall Zafira with about ten packs in it and what looked like five people from the same family unloading more packs of water into the car. Maybe they have a shop off Blackburn road and are cashing in on the crisis.

We have just hi-jacked a water tanker in Union Road. The driver just stopped at the cafe for a butty, and about 20 of us turned up with buckets. 45 minutes later, he's still there!

I went to Tesco approx 20 mins ago and there was no free water left, just a few small bottles on the shelf, but for sale. The Tesco man said he'd been told the Water Board had SORTED the problem and it should be back within 2 hrs, so ... we will see

Anyone who has actually bought water...if you save your receipts and send them to UU, you will be reimbursed....this is according to their website.

I noticed Fairfield Childrens Centre was closed as I drove past. Will UU be compensating any parents who had to take a day of work unpaid I wonder. I suspect the parents will still be charged even though it was closed today.

Just now some water has come back on, but not enough pressure to get upstairs to the loo.
Probably too many folk have left there taps open, & the pressures down because of that.

The camera man told the girl he wanted to interview that he was from BBC.

The girl said she was 9 months pregnant so I was off like a shot in case she started to have the baby.

I got home about an hour later and our water is running as normal.

I now have 12 one and a half litre bottles of water to drink.

I can't help thinking they were being optimistic. Ours was OK until a little while ago and then fizzled down to a trickle. Yet the neighbours seem to be running a tap with no problems. Maybe that is affecting ours.
