A cause for....apathetic disinterest?
Today is the 60th anniversary of the accession to the throne of our fair land of our Sovereign Lady, The Queen. More blessed than any other County in England, we have as our hereditary Duke, the monarch herself.
When I was in the Netherlands, also a Constitutional Monarchy, I was surprised to see that any and every anniversary surrounding Queen Beatrix and her life was celebrated. The national flag, adorned with an orange wimple, was hung from almost every window in Amsterdam. Parties were held. Indeed, on Queens Day, April 30th. the whole of the centre of Amsterdam is closed and the Bylaws suspended for the day in celebration. I fondly remember the slogan on one t-shirt, which read: "There is room for more than one Queen in Amsterdam" And yet here, where we enjoy a unique relationship with the Head of State, our Queen and Duke, I see almost nothing to mark this significant point in our history. For a country as obsessed with breaking records and the extolling of such, I find it odd. Have we all lost interest? |

I love the Royal Family and I really enjoyed Prince Charles documentary last night, I'm having a Jubilee tea party on Monday with afternoon tea and champagne and looking forward to it very much!
I know they're German descendants, but it's part of our history and I think it should be celebrated. I think that although costing a lot of money to run, the Royal Family bring in a lot of revenue to the country - I'd rather my taxes went on them than on the dole dossers I seem to be supporting. |

I cannot see any reason why even the most seasoned of republicans can't raise a glass of something to the Queen.
60 years - a whole lifetime of work for the people of the country.........which politician would these republicans put in her place? Which politician could have been trusted to do the same job. I can't think of any. Those who cannot wish the Queen well and celebrate this historic occasion have a meanness of spirit, I hope they get pleasure from their chosen 'alternative' pursuits today. There is no-one alive today who has witnessed anything like this - and indeed those alive(even the youngest citizens) are unlikely to see the same thing happen again. |

Re: A cause for....apathetic disinterest?
The last comparable royal pageant was held for King Charles II in 1662.
Diarist Samuel Pepys recorded boats so numerous he could "see no water." I see water. I see Ben Fogle in shorts. I see Fern Cotton in a leather jacket, and Clare Balding in girly pink. It's interesting to see, but I was hoping for greater spectacle. It reminds me a bit of the shows they put on, on the boating lake, in that park in Scarborough. When do the boats start attacking each other? |

Re: A cause for....apathetic disinterest?
I am watching the pageant, I really would like to see more of the boats and less of the presenters and their inane twaddle. There are ten or so boats with musicians and we have hardly seen anything of them. There's about an hour of the programme to go and we are promised they will be shown but I won't hold my breath.
Shame about the weather but well done to the organisers and those taking part. The Queen and Duke really seem to be enjoying the spectacle and have stood for the whole afternoon though seats were provided. Not bad for 86 and 90 years old. |

It's debatable, as to when her Diamond Jubilee is. Febuary this year, when she ascended to the title of Queen, or June next year, when she was crowned Queen at her coronation. Either way, historically, it's sod all to do with this weekend. |

How many more times?? It's the diamond jubilee of her accession not her coronation.
The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II is a multinational celebration throughout 2012 marking the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom to the thrones of seven countries upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952. As posted a month ago... http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...y-60634-8.html post 109 The Queen's previous jubilees were also celebrated in summer. Would you want a street party in February? As for the weather - it rained on Coronation Day as well 2 June 1953. |

Everyone's fully aware that this year marks sixty year since she became Queen. All that's being pointed out is there is no historic significance, to it being celebrated this particular weekend. As well as the coronation, it also piddled down for the Silver Jubilee. Perhaps plucking June, as the pinnacle of these celebrations wasn't such a hot idea. Febuary 8th this year, the actual date of her Diamond Jubilee, admittedly cooler than today, was otherwise wall-to-wall sunshine. :hothothot Not a rain cloud in sight. Long may she rain over us...in damp, and dreary June. http://th247.photobucket.com/albums/...n_umbrella.gif ;) Weather forecast for Wed 8th Feb 2012 - YouTube |

She was actually only proclaimed Queen on February 6th, on the death of her father, the King. Accession formally occurred two days later, on the 8th. Which therefore makes February the 8th this year, the 60th anniversary of her accession. Anyway she's in town now for the racing. She's still celebrating Christmas at Sandringham in February, and any later in the summer and she'll be off up to Balmoral for a couple of months. This has just squeezed in nicely, between the Derby, and Ascot. Back to this weekend's celebrations. I bet she's really looking forward to Jessie J tonight. Even though she's more of a gangsta rap fan herself. |
Re: A cause for....apathetic disinterest?
So the real reason, as to why jubilees are celebrated in June, rather than February, is that it fits in nicely with her calendar, and doesn't cause her too much upheaval.
The peasants get their damp butties, and bunting. She gets to fit them in, inbetween watching the gee-gees, without it causing too much of a bother to one's self. A perk of being the monarch, I suppose. Rearranging the calendar. At least she hasn't tried to halt the tides. |
Re: A cause for....apathetic disinterest?
It is not Wiki misinformation it is from the official diamond jubilee website
The Queen acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952 on the death of her father, King George VI. http://www.thediamondjubilee.org/accession Proclamation of her accession was 6 Feb was recorded in the London Gazette. The Accession Council took place on 8 Feb followed by formal proclamation read out in various places - I am old enough to remember this happening. It still doesn't alter the fact that her accession happened on 6 Feb on the death of her father. |
Re: A cause for....apathetic disinterest?
Maybe all this is a rehearsal for June next year when it will be the 60th anniversary of her coronation.
