A plague of flies
A plague of flies.
Has anyone else got them? I have swatted lots of them today (probably about 10), and even though I would love to open a window right now I can't. A plague on all our houses: Washout summer creates perfect conditions for surge in mosquitoes, horseflies and midges | Mail Online You have probably killed them the easy way by insecticide spray, but I can't. I have spent the whole afternoon stalking them and am feeling paranoic about them. I have ordered one of those electronic UV fly killers from Ebay, but until it arrives my fly swatter goes with me from room to room. I haven't had a decent meal today yet because all my kitchen worktops need cleaning before I can prepare a meal. There is one little blighter left to get - hope I get it before I starve :D |

I do recall that news last week
Oswaldtwistle residents in waste tipping fury (From Lancashire Telegraph) but thought I was too far away from it to get the swarms, but thinking about it, Cockers smells used to reach this far, so that could be the explanation. |
Re: A plague of flies

A COUNCILLOR has spoken out about his concern that waste tipping may be polluting a watercourse. County and borough councillor Peter Britcliffe said he had been contacted by many concerned residents over tipping of waste at the former NIPA Laboratories site at Nook Lane. Coun Britcliffe said he and residents were concerned about the long-term environmental impact. He said: “I am calling on the Environment Agency to check out Lottice Brook in Oswaldtwistle to ensure that whatever is going on at Nipa has not polluted the Water Course. People are very concerned about this.” Lancashire County Council said there was no planning permission in place to tip waste at the site and the Environment Agency said it was investigating reports of activity in the last few weeks. |

Re: A plague of flies
I have looked on a map and judge that I am between 400 and 500 metres away as the fly flies.
The next question was - how far can they fly? How Far Can House Flies Fly? | University of Kentucky Entomology “How far can house flies fly?” becomes an important question. There is no absolute answer but house flies can easily move one to two miles If large numbers of flies develop at a site, competition among them for larval breeding sites will force a portion of them to move. The need for effective fly management at major or potential breeding sites is obvious. This can be accomplished in large part by sanitation and water management to keep breeding sites dry. The more flies produced in an area, the more likely they are to move. and it seems to be the answer. |

This infestation can easily spread to Church and Accrington.
As they pass through Church they will mutate due to the interbreeding commonplace there;) |

They are smallish flies(not bluebottle size) but quickwitted, and are difficult to swat.
On the LET website one person reported that they are avoiding his electronic UV zapper. |

Re: A plague of flies
Jepster, I'm sorry you feel like that about accyweb.
If you had been reading Accyweb for some time, then you will know that these things happen...it is the nature of the internet...not like a personal face to face dialogue....and if you had been mature enough you would have shrugged and gone about your business...not spit the dummy. And if this hurts your tender ego still further, I am only telling you what you need to know. But if your ego is that sensitive, to take offence at something that is not 'real life', then maybe you won't find a forum which suits you. Susie123 did apologise(and offered some justification for her question) and you treated that apology with contempt by a bold coloured print 'please'...which equates to shouting...not good netiquette, in fact, rank bad manners. |

Re: A plague of flies
A good neighbour provides me with regular updates of neighbourhood news.
There may be a rotting body in the woods at the back, but the flies are more likely to be feasting on dog poo before their alpine mountaineering excursion. |

Everytime I thought I was down to the last two, and swatted them, I would see a few more. The closed blind is tight up to the window frame, (I have a window where the opening is at sill level) but I had a 1/2" gap at that sill level. I packed it with rolled up tea towels and the number of flies is back down to one again. |

Re: A plague of flies
Living on a farm we are plagued with flies - you would have a field day here Margaret. We invested in fixed Mosquito nets at all the windows otherwise it would be hell to live here. I, like you, absolutely hate them after seeing documentary about them years back -they are really disgusting. We get the odd one coming in the house and have classic swatters in every room to hand - no sprays. My ultimate line of defence are little umbrella type devices for covering food when I put it on the table -you're guaranteed a fly will appear if there's food around.
I've also discovered that if our overhead fans are switched on the air movement disturbs them and they go up onto the ceiling. |

My problem there was with bluebottles, due to living next door to a person with two dogs who kept them in their back yard. Those dogs never left that yard and their dog poo and pee was only cleared when it rained heavily. |
