Yes, he'll fit in fine if you want yet another upper class Tory toff who has no concept of ordinary people, how they live, their hopes, problems and aspirations. Personally I regard his possible ascension to No 10 with grave foreboding, despite all his so-called "wit" and "aplomb".

He couldn't be any worse than some of those who supposedly knew about so-called "ordinary people" - politicians with names like "call-me-Tony" and common surnames like "Brown"...

Yes, but I would hope for somebody better. Boris is a regression to the days of the feudal squire.

He's not as daft as he looks! Anyway I doubt Cameron will be giving up his throne any time soon:rolleyes:

Our only hope is the Purple Hearts Party lead by a certain Entwis ...:D

As Entwisi works for a certain well-known bank, I'm not putting much faith in him! After all, they're the root of so many of our problems! ;)

The Oxford Union to which Dianne refers is not the same as the Oxford Students' Union, it's a debating club rather than a representative body.

the Oxford Union - The Oxford Union

I think there was an old thread about Boris and can't be messed to find it but it's all very well to see him as a likable chap when is not in control of wherever you happen to live..in the five years this man has been Mayor of London transport fares have trebled.. homeless rates are going through the roof (or no roof). The Police force has been cut by almost 2,000 ..in the same period he's reversed the congestion charge for those poverty stricken souls in Chelsea and Kenstington... if we wanted a laugh Ken Dodd would have been PM long ago.:)

I think I may have said that I saw him in action many times in debates at the Oxford Union (which Susie has kindly pointed out is not the Student's Union), as President of that society he had to handle speakers from all walks of life from femminist Germaine Greer to American Generals to politicians of the day, actors, TV personalities etc. as well as the general debating among students . He was brilliant in this role keeping things moving, adding witty asides and defusing difficult moments.

The way the Union works is a little like a miniature parliamentary debate with a vote at the end by all those present who walk through a door to give their vote as to the motion being debated -the "Ayes" and the "Nays". It may sound very elitist but any student at the University can join and all different political allegiances are represented as well as independent opinion -it's not just Public School. I was decidedly on the opposite side of the house with respect to him but could appreciate an intelligent man -so he does look daft -but as far as I could see he's not.

I believe he also left the University with a 1st class degree in a Classical subject. Now before you jump up and shout "that's because he had a privileged education", Public School etc, may i point out that it doesn't count one jot. Prince Charles I believe left Cambridge with a 3rd class degree which is considered to be just a pass if anyone could have been favoured surely he would have been....

He has been voted in twice now by the population of London -that counts for something. Whether all the problems that are hitting the city are directly his fault or whether they are just the knock on effect of the economical madness of preceding years I can't say -I'm no an expert. I think though that councils across the country and beyond i.e. in Europe are all pretty much in the same sticky situation.

A little example being the local council where i live in Castelverde near Cremona which counts just over 5,000 souls. Until a couple of years ago it was booming here -a beautiful park was opened, the Town Hall square completely rennovated, excellent services, cycle paths made and maintained, a civic arts center opened etc etc. -last years end of year accounts showed they were practically bankrupt because of the national economical situation. They put speed cameras on the main road through here from Milan to make ends meet! Then sold of a plot of land for a supermarket on the edge of the village which will probably kill off the local shops and market when it opens...it has become a mad world.
