Please Remember

Everyone on this site is allowed an opinion, no matter how wrong it may seem, we do appear to be hard on some newbies, is there a fair and honest reason why?

I think the answer is yes, any newbie that comes on site to correct everyone, change what works to something that suits them is wrong.
Anyone that comes on site can't be bothered to read what has come before no matter how trivial or askew a posters point may be is wrong.

We aren't like other sites, we don't always stick directly to the point a thread may have been started for.

We are however alive, compared with other sites that started around the same time, we are more than alive we are what these newbies come here for a vibrant site that stretches it's rules until breaking point, the worst thing that could happen to this site is if we gave way to newbies, accept them? Yes, I accept them with open arms until they want to change what is working to what they think the site aught to be.

Yes there is a solid core of long term members, there are also long term members that drift in and out, there are new members that add to the site with their humour, outlook and common sense that suddenly ARE long term members.

Unfortunately there are also new members that demand we change...

Into what? Burnleyweb? long gone.
Blackburnweb yeah right if you want to be a crowd on your own.

Or could we just stay as we are, willing to change and grow as life goes on but determined to be AccyWeb no matter how wrong a newbie may think we are?

Strange as it may seem, I love everyone of you, and couldn't live without you.

:D

When members leave, and when newbies don't stay for long, it is evident that some regulars have been offensive. That needs to change and (even) newbies have the right to expect and suggest that it should.

In the same way that you would not associate with offensive people in a social setting, you prefer they not enter your home on a screen.

The usual answer to them is 'we like it here, if you don't - leave'.

The long term future result will be a small core of offensive people who just enjoy insulting each other.

The signs that it is happening has surfaced recently.

That's life.

I remember someone posting, unfairly in my opinion, that they were leaving the forum, and naming you, as the reason why.

Too hot?

Dislike rooms with stoves, sinks, pots and pans?

Probably an unwise career choice then, being a chef.

Everyone here was a newbie at one time.

I, like most, probably stepped on a few toes, but I took any flak, regardless. I didn't expect the forum to fit around me. I knew it would have to be the other way round, if I was to be accepted into the fold.

It would be silly to think this forum was for everyone. It won't be.

What I think is sillier personally, are the members who stick around, to moan about a supposed golden age on here.

There wasn't one, or if there was, it's now, today.

For as Less posted, and others, like Wynonie say often, look around you at other local forums, Accy Web is a success, and unlike many, it's still here.

The council were given half a million quid of tax payers' money to start a rival local forum...which closed within the year.

Accy Web is like a soap. Big, and smaller characters come, and go, yet the show manages to survive.

If it ever stops interesting me here, there'll be no teary goodbye threads. I'll just get in my cab, and go off down the virtual cobbles, without so much as a backwards glance.

In the meantime...get used to it.

Accy Web isn't broken, and any attempt to fix it will most likely be challenged.

;)

Some long threads would be easier to read if they weren't interrupted every few posts by sniping and nastiness. I do find myself giving up on some for that reason even when I wish to post a pertinent comment.

I agree with a lot less has said here. But the whole point I was making before is you cannot be hard on newbies. Forums don't work that way. RULES are the only thing that should be hard on newbies BUT more important long term members should set the example.

No Garinda, I don't do nastiness, or bile or venom. Nastiness is in the eye of the beholder.

You know of course to what I am referring, and others if they wish may look it up, or find it hilarious without knowing what I really mean, as some have done. I was merely congratulating you on a more tasteful avatar than usual, and yes I know it will be gone soon enough, but then so will this thread if it continues like others have done recently.

I must say that when I first joined Accyweb about twelve months ago I had a lot of nasty comments about what I had to say, and got quite upset about it. It was the first time I had ever posted anything anywhere and wasn't really sure what to do, and didn't expect the response I got. But after that I must say everyone has been fine and I really enjoy seeing what everyone has to say and responding if I have something to say. (I remember my tutor at uni telling me I was a bigot and I've tried to mend my ways over the last couple of decades!) Perhaps it's worth remembering that new members aren't always experienced in the etiquette of internet posting and grant them a bit of slack when they start posting, unless they're completely offensive?

I always think of a forum like this as going to the pub. Would you walk up to a group of strangers and start rambling or would you get to know who's who first ? ;)

Re: Please Remember

I post this, knowing some may disagree with me, but I think it needs saying, so I will.

No one, as far as I know, is forced to either read, nor publish anything on the worldwide web.

People are free to have whatever thoughts and beliefs they wish.

However, and this is where a few struggle, if someone feels a need to share their thoughts publicly with others, they should be prepared for the fact that others may offer counterviews to their own.

Once the few realise this, there'll be no more teary tantrums, or need for collective wound licking.

Being an optimist, and a bit of a softy, I hope the day comes when this realisation takes place, and the miserable few find some sort of peace in their lives.

Maybe a good scenario..but at the same time would you expect one of the regulars to start slagging you off and make unfounded accusations about you or your family?.. how would you respond to that person in the pub?

garinda 07-09-2012 19:58

Re: Please Remember

As for myself, it was only last week that I posted the modus operandi I've always followed on here, and which I tend to follow in life too, and which has always stood me in good stead.

Though being kind, to those who struggle reading what's already been said, I'll repeat it.

Nice people, are treated ever so nicely, and with respect.

Conversely, if someone on here, in my opinion, is unnecessarily nasty, pompous, rude, patronising, or whatever, to anyone, then they'll get a taste of their own medicine...with an added dose of poison thrown in for good measure. Sometimes fatally so.

If anyone feels I've ever been rude to them, that's because I've first seen similar rudeness exhibited by them.

This is how I've operated, and will carry on, because there's always a few who haven't quite grasped this.

Or even realised just how good I am at doling out the prescripted doses.

So instead of clutching at straws, making weak claims that the drugs I take for Parkinson's have somehow changed me, take a look back through some of my old posts.

You'll clearly see there's been absolutely no change.

Nor will there be.

;)

Kind of interesting view. But myself I don't think that view fits. I suppose that depends on the kind of person you are.

Take me for example. I couldn't(more than wouldn't) walk up to a group of strangers in a pub. Seriously that is something I simply cannot do. That kind of thing comes naturally for some.

But. It is dead simple for me to join a forum and introduce myself. In a pub there isn't a board where you can print a note and pin it up saying "Hi my name is Restless. I like Computers, Technology and I am a pretentious singer-songwriter wannabee. Pleased to meet you"

Yeh but point here is simple, most that now know one another didn't before accyweb fact, Most of us got to know each other by turning up at accyweb meets n meeting folk who had very different points of view on certain subjects, We were all newbies at some point, but no-ones ever come to blows in fact most have become good mates who still disagree on certain issues n always will, Its mainly namby pambys, moaners, n tarts that don't mix in my view, one day perhaps the penny will drop n they may just get a life.

That's true.

We're all different, and the world's a better place for it.

Pesonally I've always felt I have the right to speak out and say something, if I believed it to be right, and felt it needed to be said.

Plus, I've never been shy, though I do always assess an environment, before deciding how best to broach it, so as to have my say...and ensure that it's heard.

I received my first death threat aged fifteen, for publicly attacking a sorry arse little man, who was actively involved with fascism, and stood in local General Elections here, and in Blackburn for the National Front.

He didn't get the better of me, because I believed what he spouted was wrong. So a few moaning minnies on here, who are equally wrong in my opinion, have no chance.

Yes, we are all different.

I have my elephant skin, a perky trunk, and a very long memory.

Others don't.

In the great scheme of things there's no definitive right, or wrong.

Just differences, which are equally right, to those that believe they are.

:)

I didn't know a soul, when I first joined here.

I posted loads...there's a suprise, on that first winter's night, and probably a lot of what I said was disagreed with.

Some said as much.

I answered their counterview, and so on, and so on.

It's what tends to happen on a successful internet forum.

As Less posted, it works.

If new members realise that, all is well, if they don't, being a gent, I'll hold the door open whilst they leave.

No one's forced to post, or read this waffle with a gun held to their head.

One post, or a million and one posts, that's the thing about Accy Web, it doesn't really matter about stuff like spelling or grammar on here, everyone's voice has an equal validity on this forum

Only the odd newbie, or the delusional/paranoid, ever think otherwise.

Why 200 posts, has that some special significance?

Is that your own average post count per decade?

Does that really matter?

I probably knocked out that many posts, within the first twenty four hours of joining.

That really doesn't add anymore weight to what I say, in reality, than a person making their very first post here.

I thought I had seen it all, but I have just had red karma with an accompanying threat -
to expect a visit from an elderly lady 'lioness defending her cub'.

This forum is deteriorating into a punch and judy show where new members join and watch the regulars abuse each other.

I opt out until sanity is restored.

It certainly wasn't a threat. I just confirmed what I'd already posted publicly on here last week, in reply to your recent anomymous karma message to myself.

If someone blabs to my mother, that you've been bad mouthing my late father, hinting at some simister secret you know about him and my late aunt, expect her to give you her thoughts on the matter, if you ever run into her again.

This has happened.

She, like her sons, really isn't afraid to speak her mind, if she thinks something needs to be said.

;)

Besides, that's not what was said.

Went something along the lines of me being a pussy cat.

Not a lioness, defending the memory of her late, much loved husband, against scurrilous muck raking.

His memory she might defend.

The pussy cats can defend themselves.

We are a close family, with absolutely no secrets, and knew my late father a lot better than you.

Please feel free to post what you think you know publicly.

It will be addressed.

I agree that's rare.

You're much more likely to blow your own trumpet, or be pointing out other members' spelling or grammar mistakes.

However, when you were a newbie, some would consider it a little nasty, in the name calling department, when you and MargaretR had a little set to to, when sanity was questioned, and the rather rude term 'nutter' was bandied about.

your first point is debatable, i have seen many a post from regulars, who dont address someones post, but will respond correcting, spelling grammar

and reading anything subjectively is obviously a skill that you are found wanting, a lot of peoples opinions are ridiculed, the evidence is in front of your eyes but you wont see it, because its "justified vitriol" in your mind

special significance of the number, its a fact thats all, cold hard fact, not an opinion, FACT, i merely questioned does anyone else find it strange? but i fall into the delusional/paranoid bracket i fear.

1 post or millions but then make a referance to my post count, sort of a contradiction there, but what do i know?

that many posts in 24 hours, doesnt surprise me, wether you actually "said anything" in that 24hours, or just typed unrelated nonsense as you are prone to do.

i for one, had only recently started regular postings, usually regarding a couple of my hobbies, in the hope of finding like minded people, i like to think i did

i was encouraged by other members, to post elsewhere on the site, so i did

on my first post out of my "comfort zone" and the very first response i got was name calling, that was then "jumped on" by another regular.
the point i raised was not addressed once, but many joined in with the ridicule of "the junior member",

some of the name calling is still there for all to see, although i have pm'd mods, more than once, as requested, but as of yet have not received a reply.

i know some of you are aware of this, some aren't, may i suggest those who are "sick", of "the usual suspects", not do as regulary requested, and" find another forum", but post, post, post

and maybe, just maybe, we can learn to ignore "the insignificant others", and not feed their troll inside

I like to think that the mods we have on here do a great unpaid job and in all the time on here I've found that if things get out of had they do something about it, I've had my fair share of warnings and have had posts deleted because they overstepped the mark, I've even got a few people on my ignore list because I know that keep on a dialog with them would end up in me and probably them getting a ban, but the thing is if people want a website where everything is nicely nicely and the site changes every time a new member thinks something isn't to their liking then accyweb ain't for you, I think that's why its still one of the best sites of its type in the country and as I've said before has over 150 members a day visiting everyday bar none, people come people go some stick around some don't but the site goes on mainly because the way it is and how its run

you seem to have an obsession with "he knows it all"

it an opinion, what dont you understand, you have your opinion, i have mine

there are only people like you who cant see past that, and obviously believe your opinions are "right", how can an opinion be wrong, its what makes us different

i have never once suggested the site should change, i have however pleaded for members to be a little more tolerant, and be subjective, thats a personal plea, not a criticism of accyweb and its format, but of some of its members.

As I posted last week, quite honestly I laughed out loud.

Thinking that desperation sadly forces some to scrape right to the bottom of that barrel of vileness, when they try to besmirch the reputation of someone, although not perfect, as none of us are, was a good man, and is no longer alive to defend himself.

Unlike me, know she knows what a certain person has stooped to, my mother's certainly not laughing.

No secrets in our family, and cut one, we all bleed. It's what tends to happen around here in families, and communities.

As for karma, as I said to you when you were a newbie, and indulging in a bit of nasty name calling with MargaretR, it is best to ignore it.

Or as I did, just laugh.

;)

Certainly, I will explain, I started it so that those unhappy with the site and it's members would make pratts of themselves, it's working so far, though a few haven't yet bit, I suspect they are the ones that steal time from their employers during the week, anything rather than actually do some real work.

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4]

As Less said, as a local forum this is a success, so probably won't be changing anytime soon..

So the best thing to do, is just accept Accy Web as it is, and as it's always been, warts and all.

You'll feel so much happier when you've stopped having a little moan, and just accept the reality of life on this forum.

Because you can google and post links this makes you superior in what way?

You argue because you're hurt, you're hurt because you are bitter, you're bitter because you did something wrong and were punished, You come on site to blame someone, anyone, I do better at this than the lottery, you chose me, well I don't care/mind or feel terribly bothered while you're answering me your not bothering anybody else and I already know I'm a fool, so no harm done to me, but you obviously don't know that you are also a fool, but are you really a better fool than me?

We know all about those.

Accy Web's dealt with more than their fair share of them, over the years.

As stubborn as moles, digging up a prize lawn sometimes, but with the right treatment, they can be successfully eradicated.

i have never suggested site should change, i believe i have posted this point before

and you are probably right, about been happier, i am not on here "to moan",

i came on here to share some pictures, thats all, but once you see something you disagree with, should you just ignore that, just turn a blind eye, in a democracy, its your right to have your say, have your opinion heard is it not?

however i fear whatever i say, will just be seen as contradictory, because i dont share the same views, and then lampooned because they are different, or accused of being a know it all.

it does come across that unless your views are the same, dont post!

surely you dont condone that, for what is debate without 2 or more opinions, or am i wrong, and this site isnt for debate?

if a post was in anything goes, fair enough, but newbies are advised to go and read the rules, and they do and follow them, make a post in genaeral chat, and it just degrades into a slanging match or tedious jokey comment.

why cant those threads be contained to the place that is designated, thats not trying to change it, is it?

And to think all this started a week ago over a knob. Beats the war of Jenkin's Ear into a cocked hat (if you don't mind the metaphor).

Wonder if it will go on as long?

The War of Jenkins' Ear was a conflict between Great Britain and Spain that lasted from 1739 to 1748, with major operations largely ended by 1742. Its unusual name, coined by Thomas Carlyle in 1858, refers to an ear severed from Robert Jenkins, captain of a British merchant ship. The severed ear was subsequently exhibited before Parliament. The tale of the ear's separation from Jenkins, following the boarding of his vessel by Spanish coast guards in 1731, provided the impetus to war against the Spanish Empire.

I believe, (though am willing to be shot down because I'm working from memory), that Jenkins was a liar and it was later rumored that his ear was removed when he was a pirate, but our Government had been looking for an excuse to go to war, so they did, (nothing new there then).

They are like Ant and deck difficult to tell apart, one merges into the other, I'm sure he's posted something similar if not I apologise for him not posting that he doesn't read threads but I won't apologise for the way he answers posts within them.
