Re: Corona Virus

Had I lived back in those olden days I probably would have been in favour of Ale(it was drunk because it was safer than water) but as I do not live in those olden days I will stick to tea....it is much less likely to make me fall down(I cannot hold my alcohol these days) :)
You can have my share of the ale Taddy.
I think it was the dutch Clipper ships that brought us tea Taddy...I think Sir Walter was responsible for baccy and spuds.
It was Catherine de Braganza(Charles the II's wife) who made tea drinking fashionable omong the upper classes.....while the hoi polloi(that would be you and me) had to drinke ale because back then tea was too expensive.

Son, you really made me chuckle with that one.
Listen old bones take a long time to heal....and I don’t need any falling down juice to help me fall over.
Taddy can have mine....that’s safer all round.

The comment about Sir Walter Raleigh,(the inventer of the bicycle) was meant as a joke but then again I presumed the folk reading it would realise that and yes, he was the bringer of spuds and Tobacco,(may have spelt that wrong). Marge, Can you remember the history teacher at Woodnook in the late fifties, early sixties ?

I think that the Tea Clippers like the Cutty Sark and the (Thermopylia), I will stand to be corrected on the spelling of the second one; came much later, I shall have to research it. it will be something to do during lockdown.
Stay Home, Stay Happy, carry on posting. Regards, Mr Hob/gob.

Yes...I knew it was a joke Taddy.
As for the history teacher......well Mrs Rawcliffe taught us history at one point, but I cannot remember who taught us later on.
I can remember a lot of the teachers Mr Gale(fat guy with glasses drove a white renault five)....Mrs Ashcroft taught music,Mrs Thompson taught religious instruction and lived opposite Oak hill park.....Mr Allen head teacher...aka Holy Joe, Mrs Whittaker taught sceince and PE and was married to Jim Bowen.
Miss Smart domestic science, Miss Atherton art. Mrs Shaw taught needlework.
Milton Suthers Maths(scared the bejasus out of me)
I am sure more will come to me when I stop trying to think of their names.

Taddy here is some learning for you.
The Dutch East India company was founded in 1602.
This was just as Charles II wife(Catherine de Braganza) popularised tea drinking among the rich and famous.
The dutch East india Company based much of their trade on the importation of tea into europe in the early part of the 1600's because it was a lucrative trade.
They also traded in other items such as psices and took Europeans out to colonise India and the East.

This is seriously off topic, but far more interesting.

Re: Corona Virus

You are right about Dutch ships bringing in our first tea, The two Tea Clippers that I mentioned did not start competing against each other until the late 19th, Early 20th Century. (what a wonderful thing this electronic Google machine is).

Sorry about going off topic, I never thought, could the history teacher have been Mr Wade?
