Instead of stabbing the lid Shill & risking a slip & cut, use a table knife slipped in the side between jar & lid, a little twist or levering & that usually breaks the vaccum seal.

What do you find frustrating?

Run it under some hot water, the lid expands more than the jar and hey presto one loose lid.

Hi Shillelagh,
The point of "lids on jars" try this:
Put the lid under the hot water tap for a couple of minutes or so, after the heat has caused the lid to expand, it can then be removed very easily.
Cheers

that does work, but surely there should be no need to do it anyway.

I bought this on Amazon, opens jars safely and also those pesky ring pull tins without emptying the contents down your sweater.

In an ideal world there would be no need but unfortunately people get older and weaker and struggle with things like arthritis which makes them struggle with things they wouldn`t have when they were younger.

Do I detect a little dig at my drinking habits here ?

That reminds me it's about time that I opened a bottle.

Why a dig? Could it not just be part of an on going conversation, if I was having a dig it would probably be about something trivial not something as important and sacrosanct as a mans drinking habits.

Jen you are using dangerous means to open your jars....you could end up with blood all over the place.
the handle of a spoon slid under the lid to release the vacuum...but my 'go to' trick is...I have the cuff of an old marigold rubber glove(other brands are available) and i put this over the lid of the jar and twist...it gives better grip and so far...it has worked for me...with no risk of injury.

anyone with a car oil filter removal tool in their toolbox can use one to loosen lids on jars.

Hold on though, if a person isn't practical enough to remove a jar lid safely, the chances of them either having a tool for removing oil filters or of being capable of removing an oil filter are, well, not an optimistic outlook on that one is there?
