Re: whats the point
The biggest yawnfest I had to endure at school was Crane's The Red Badge Of Courage. It was made into a film with Audie Murphy, which was, if anything, even more stultifyingly boring! At college we were made to read Aristophanes' play The Frogs, I couldn't stay awake. But the next day we were asked to perform the play, and we could not stop laughing. Funny innit?

Re: whats the point
I once [genuinely] forgot to take in some English homework and was given 500 lines by teacher. [Moorhead circa 1982]
Whilst sat at home that evening doing the said lines my father asked what I was doing.I explained and he promptly threw the 10 or so lines in the bin and said I should do no more. He accompanied me to school the following morning and berated my teacher for giving me lines to do;"if you need to give her something to write make it a bloody essay;you are supposed to be teaching her English!" Dad was a lecturer in English at the college and had a more "modern" outlook to teaching! |
Re: whats the point
And quite right too. Any subject is interesting, it is the way that it is presented that turns people off (this obviously does not apply to The Red Badge of Courage, there is nothing that would redeem that).
