Blue bins and blue bags

Can someone tell me why we have to seperate are bottles etc into these when the recycling wagon just mixes them together. Surely they could have used an ordanary bin wagon to do this without paying a fortune for the recycling wagon

The recycling wagon has separate compartments for each of the different materials. I've asked about blue bins instead as I must admit I'd prefer one myself but we do save quite a bit of money by separating the waste on the doorstep.

We'd have to issue a blue wheelie bin to each of the 30,000+ homes in Hyndburn at a cost of around £20 a time for starters, we'd need a new fleet of wagons plus we'd have to pay a third party to separate the recycling at the other end.

I know it is being looked into and it is a much more convenient system for the residents I admit but at the moment money is exceptionally tight, hence my constant rantings on here about council waste.

Sorry I can't be more positive about it!

It has separate compartments in it, when the side lifts up it dumps the stuff in the side bins into the separate ones inside it. Never thought about how it empties the inside compartments though

The simple answer is that I don't know but we're one of the top councils in the country on that score and the waste services team are extremely efficient.

It is the one area of the council I am quite prepared to leave well alone.

looking at the wagon it lookes like it just dumps it all out the back mixing the bottles etc together!

Surely it would have been cheaper to use the regular bin wagons they had plus giving us 1 wheely bin for bottles plastic etc then seperating the items at the recycling plant rather than buy a fleet of special wagons

Because they don't need to keep recycling police checking the bins employed just to make sure we haven't put an envelope with a window in their White sack.

The French system is much simpler. Metal, plastics and cardboard go into one bag and they sort it out later. In my commune in 2009 the local authority made a profit of 38,000 euro, and it is less than a quarter the size of Accrington, never mind Hyndburn.

BwD changed to that system a few years ago and it's an option open to every council to do so but it all boils down to finance. I suspect they're a more afflent council than Hyndburn and it isn't cheap to change systems.

Like I've said, it would be a less messy affair and I would personally welcome it from a resident's point of view but just at the moment I suspect it isn't financially practical for us to switch to a blue bin.
