Change the Union Flag and National Anthem

Open2.net have started a website talking about changing the Union Flag (Union Jack) and the National Anthem to something more modern relating to Britain. Asking if they are both still relevant to modern Britain....?

What do you think? I'm very proud of my country flag and National Anthem and feel that a flag / song does not need to change just because people find it offensive (Which is all it boils down to).

Just interesting to know what others think.

Why should we change it, most of the illegal imigrants have only just learn it. lol (sorry). It's only called the "Union Jack" when it's flown at sea.

The idea was obviously thought up by some over pain moron with to much time on there hands.

How about an English rose against a heart?

The National Anthem could be something by Wham, Duran Duran, or one of Diana's other favourite groups.

Couldn't do that. You'd end up offending the colour blind soceity & heavy metal fans.

I like the flag, but how many people know which way up it's supposed to be? Mind you, with some of the latest cheap copies it doesn't matter which way up it is. The anthem is pretty dreary thoough. We could do with somethig with a bit more oomph. I'm with Billy Connolly on this one - stick some patriotic words to the Archers theme!

I think you have got it in one Neal, it seems Britain is being taken over by other nationales wont go further with that hehehe, but our very nation that once reigned with pride is being destroyed, i love our flag i have the union jack on my wall in my lounge

Come on when is Britain going to fight back & Rule Britiania as way it should be!!

I know which way round it goes. That Billy Connolly sketch was hilarious.

Leave our flag alone, it's brilliant! There's nothing like it anywhere in the world and it's instantly recognisable. Let's reclaim it from the BNP.

The anthem, though - it's a bit of a dirge isn't it? Maybe it's not so much the tune but the words are ridiculous, especially the 2nd verse. OK let's keep the tune, speed it up a bit and write new lyrics. The queen doesn't need saving, she's got staff to do that.

I like Jerusalem, but think if it was adopted as our National Anthem some of the gruff voices at footy matches would struggle with the higher pitch required for the later verses.

I don't find the flag offensive. If it has been "hijacked" by the BNP then just reclaim it back.

That is a song the whole country could get behind, and there's a dance too which would look great if all the spectators in the Olympic Stadium were doing it.

I regard the Cross of St.George to be the national flag and not the union flag.

Strange this thread should be up today ... thought about the Union Jack as I was coming up the M5 today just before it joins the M6. On the left of me was a small Union Jack and then further up, to the right of me, was this huge Union Jack on a, what I think was some sort of recovery service (only got a glimpse you understand). I thought, yes !!! At last, some patronism !! Almost saluted. Hope it is catching.

As to the National Anthem, I love Jerusalem too, however, as Garinda states not practical, so let's stay with what we got eh? as within everybody's range ..
