Humphrey Lyttleton
The brilliant chairman of "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue" died yesterday at the age of 86. Humph was also a terrific trumpet player and had a very good jazz band for many years as well as being a cartoonist for the Daily Mail for some years.
I listened to ISIHAC on Radio 4 from when it started, over 30 years ago, and Humph just got better and better as he got older - as did the show. They broke the mould when they made him.

Sad to say, until yesterday I'd never heard of him.
 RIP anyway, Humphrey.

Very sad news. I was no great fan of his music, but he had brilliant comic timing. RIP Humph

I saw Humph and Nat Gonella on several occasions. He was one of the greats - the first record I ever bought was "Bad Penny Blues"

Apparently he was inspired by Louis Armstrong to play the trumpet and when his mother took him to the shop to buy one, she asked him if he'd rather not have a clarinet.
 Superbly talented man and ISIHAC was a truly hilarious show. RIP

As a trad jazz lover I liked Humph, still have several 78’s, numerous CD’s and spent many evenings at his jazz club in London back in the fifties. In those days, as a serviceman in uniform, there was no charge to get in.
“I’m Sorry I Haven't a Clue” was one of the funniest radio programmes ever. Humph will be missed but his music will live on and it wouldn’t surprise me if aunty Beeb brought out compilations of “I’m Sorry I Haven't a Clue”.

I was a big jazz fan in my youth, and as statede in another thread I was a regular at the Accy Jazz Club at Peel Park in the 60s, Humph was the first jazz musician to have a top twenty hit back in the fifies with Bad Penny Blues R.I.P. Humph

Radio 4 broadcast an ISIHAC from 1995 at 12 o clock today. Not only did it have Humph sounding remarkably young - he was only 73 then - the late, much lamented Willie Rushton was also on the panel. I'd almost forgotten how funny he was.
Although I loved the show I hope they don't try to keep it going with a new chairman. No one could ever replace Humph.
