Accrington College once occupied the site after it closed as a skill centre, so did HBC, but now they have both got their own buildings so the "skill centre" is empty and in need of re-development. Bet Asda are kicking themselves hemmed in on Hyndburn road and no room to do anything.

No offence to people that work at asda or in a store, but it aint exactly going to bring in the money.
If Accrington wants to do well, it needs to have better paid jobs as well as lower paid jobs. If everyone is paid low then the shops can only serve low paid people. This means the quality is not going to be good.
The evening papers are full of jobs, some well paid some not so well paid.

Training and education needs to be invested in, not bringing supermarkets into an already crowded market, to kill off the few sole traders we have. No matter how many jobs it brings in, its a waste, and can only mean the further demise of Accrington.
Accrington & Rossendale College have invested heavily in education and training in Accrington, they have rebuilt the Sandy Lane site and offer all sorts of courses, but at the end of the day a person has got to want to better him/herself don't you think?

Yes, and that, right there is a big problem! However, that is not really the problem under discussion here.
Encourage low paying companies to thrive in your town and you end up with low paid people and that in turn means less money to be spent at any other places around town.
Wecome to pound shop heaven.
Welcome to a place that people, once they do earn some money(generally, by working out of town), don't want to live in - so move elsewhere.
Welcome to Accrington!
Welcome to Tesco!

Welcome to Accrington!
Welcome to Tesco!
The traditional large employers are long gone, some to China and the like.
English Electric was a large employer, look at that site now, a collection of "units" storage etc.Lets face the facts Accrington is no longer a manufacturing base and has not been for many a year.
So why not welcome Tesco or any other major developer that wishes to improve our town centres. at the end of the day it's employment for a lot of Accrington people

So we should just give up on it! Money can be spent to keep what little industry and commerce is still left in Accrington, in Accrington, and to promote the place for new investment. Retail units are an easy way out right now, but in the future the local economy will not be able to support them all. Do you really think we should rely on supermarkets for our income?

I would much prefer our councils to try to find real genuine businesses, with real genuine prospects than another supermarket that we totally don't need.

Good luck to the children of Accrington, I'm pretty sure the clever ones will be out of here as soon as they are 18, and I'm almost certain they wont ever look back!

I am in total agreement with you on that, but our council don't seem to be able to do that do they.
At least if Tesco come it is employment for some.

What about the mill in Gt Harwood, demolished to build houses, a Barnfield/HBC partnership venture.
