Why do new members post and get a lot of welcomes, but do not seem to post anymore. Do we scare them off?
|
Re: New Members
Why do fish swim? its always been the case, just human nature i imagine.:)
|
Re: New Members
I think some people must like reading the posts without wanting to contribute to the topics. Either that or they lost interest and don't bother anymore. Their loss!
|
Re: New Members
Perhaps its due to threads like Globe bowling club and the reaction the newish members are getting from that

Re: New Members
Oh, there are some that come on and want to walk over everyone elses beliefs, they can be as devout as they like so long as they don't ram it down other people's throats.
Might I also suggest that the members now start taking some of the responsibility themselves? How many times has someone posted on a thread, 'why haven't the mod's done anything?'. Well if you don't report it they can't do anything, YOU can police the site, YOU can make a difference, me? I would love to go back to sitting in the 'Anything Goes' section and wasting my life away there. :) |
Re: New Members
Maybe it's because they feel like they might get singled out by some of the established members.
Maybe they have a quick look through the site and see there are certain members who talk like their 8ft tall, arms and legs like oak trees and have death rays coming from their eyes. Maybe they think there are members who are just waiting to sting a new member like a angry wasp. Perhaps they think there are members who will jump to assumptions about their intent, gender, and personal life. Perhaps they think folk might discuss these assumptions rather than discussing the actual topic in question and they don't want the attention. Perhaps they think if they write a comment that doesn't fit into certain members 'bubbles' they'll be challenged and if they hold their own, reinforcements in the form of other members (angry wasps) might also jump in and overwhelm them. I've seen some of the things listed and I'm amazed that the offenders feel justified in attacking new(er) members somehow rationalising to themselves that their not bullying new(er) members but that their actually doing some sort of service for the site. And the best thing is those members who take part in these bullying activities assume that the new(er) members don't have a life, when in most cases it's those members themselves that spend all day sat playing with toy train sets,on the internet etc and never really get out. |

I also noticed you attempting to join in these actions you claim to be so terrible, (perhaps hoping to gain some kudos from other members?) on a certain religious thread and had to have an image you put on removed (It seems the mods thought it unworthy even for this nasty little site and it's members), now as everyone knows I'm not attempting to get a reaction from you but some how whilst reading the above one of your favourite words attempted to cross my mind, (it wasn't travelling very fast so I was able to read it and here it is). :D hypocrite hyp·o·crite [hip-uh-krit] Show IPA noun 1. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs. 2. a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, especially one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements. Re: New Members
I was a new member once as well. I don't remember having a tough time of it at all.
Maybe that was because I dipped my toes in the water cautiously. I watched to see how the land lay before jumping in. I don't recall telling the people who were already on the site, how things should be done...or could be done better. I reckon that if you need to do that then this is not the right forum and you should search a bit longer until you find one which meets your rugged criteria. I really do appreciate that new members come on with a fresh approach.....different viewpoints and ideas....but how they put these ideas and viewpoints across is crucial to how they will be accepted. And when things get heated(as they sometimes do) I have found that it is best to withdraw, to wait until the pan has cooled before trying to drink the soup. Accyweb is like a family......there are some members of your family that you are grateful you only see at High days and Holidays...there are some that you get on with. Just don't let an outsider try to come in and do some kicking, because when you kick one of us we all limp! |
Re: New Members
Exactly Margaret,i didn't know a soul on here when i joined, apart from the guy that told me about the site, n he aint been on fer years, I dont think i have changed me style since day one? Have had some big disagreements wi some people on here, But don't recall bleating about it? Many of those i have argued wi, are now good friends, Probably cos same as me, they aint whined about disagreements either.

Re: New Members
Same old same old...every so often for as long as I can remember we've had the occasional new member pitching up who decides that the forum isn't up to their exacting standards and proceeds to lecture us on what we must do to improve...and yet...and yet...Accyweb is one if the most popular local forums in the area, far more well-used than other forums from bigger towns. Funny that.

Re: New Members
Yes, Margaret - it IS like a family. I joined Accyweb initially as I had come across this forum in my research re family history and I found that I was able to get answers from members to some of my queries re my husband’s Accrington connection. I was overwhelmed by the quick response and the help so generously given.
By that time I felt I was part of the Accyweb family and there was no way I was leaving it, at least not willingly! I was addicted!!!! Since then I have enjoyed some very interesting threads and postings – admittedly sometimes controversial (but isn’t that what makes a good discussion so much more interesting) – many chuckles, felt shared sadness over illnesses and loss, learnt a wealth of knowledge about the area and so much more. I am one of those who enjoy putting my bit in when I have an opinion or a comment to make (as may have been noticed!!!), but most of all I enjoy reading the postings from other members. I must admit that sometimes I get rather hot under the collar over some postings (and the odd member or two – oops!) but that’s another story. Although I have never met any of the members personally I feel I do know so many of them. So right now I am enjoying my morning coffee and a good read to start the day….. |
Re: New Members
By the way, for all those interested in joining the only true clique on AccyWeb, The Fellowship of the Hat:alright:, application forms are available from me, or from DiG. Fill them in, and return them. If you are sending them to me, please remember to complete them in both official languages.
Oh, by the way, if you have never been drunk, wasted, trashed, pee'd as a rat (or newt, if you prefer), totalled, smashed, impaired (this for the posh folks) etc. in the great city of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, don't bother applying.;) Those who qualify, but who had the misfortune to do the technicolour yawn all over the table and/or the bar, will be accepted on probation. If you puked on the bouncer while making an unplanned exit from the bar, this counts in your favour.:D |
Re: New Members

I couldn't fill in the application form in both official languages. I speak three languages......English, rubbish and gibberish(I am most fluent in the last two). It saddens me that I am very unlikely to ever be in this club that has such celebrated members as Eric...and the lad from Germany(alright Son?). Such is life...full of disappointments! |

The real clique are those of us who have done the crawl between the top end of Ossy to the bottom in the 1970's, when there was a pub on every corner...1/2 of proper beer ( not the chemical crud) in each pub, in the 3.5 hours of legal drinking time of the day..then walk back to the Greyhound for after time for a game of killer... Damn Canucks..think they invented the art of being a ''''head :p |

I tried that in 60s but with 1 pint in each pub.........................FAILED.:D was more pubs then though.

I also failed on more occasions than I can count the hangovers from, now I would probably still fail, but it would be because I would die of dehydration walking from the first pub to the second one. |
Re: New Members
See..even us ale cans learn from the 'old folk'.... a pint in each pub was an impossibility, unless you had hollow legs, so we adjusted it to 1/2 pint and conquered.
Pity that some can't learn that the 'old folk' of the forum really do have a handle on what works and adjust accordingly |

Re: New Members
Some people just have one purpose in mind signing up to a forum.
Examples for signing up to a forum like this Buy & Sell section - Some just want to use this portion of the site - A good example of this would be this user. O2Hudsond(i think) this dude must sell a phone everyday Lost family / friend - There has been many a user sign up for this purpose. Many have moved on from accy and so do not feel the need to keep visiting the site. Technical Help - Some that need help fixing a problem with their computers for example might visit such a forum substituting tech forums for local forums... Once they have fixed their problem, forum is forgotten. Music - Myself, this is how I found the site. I was looking for like minded people that maybe wanted to start a band. There was a few musicians on here... but not many. However I stuck around. But perhaps many with the same purpose do not. Some sign up just to comment on one thread, but actually visit the forum more than others. Some might sign up to read about local sports. Accrington Stanley and such. You don't notice them because they use that part of the forum and seldom any other part. Likewise. I never read that section, because I am not a sports fan... |
Re: New Members
One definition of the word ‘forum’ according to the Oxford Dictionary, is ‘An Internet site where users can post comments about a particular issue or topic and reply to other users' postings; a message board’. While I shouldn’t think it’s imperative that every member makes comments, on the other hand if no one did then it wouldn’t be the interesting, sometimes controversial and often very amusing forum that it is – but would simply be a club……
…and while on the subject of definitions, the word ‘clique’ (again according to the Oxford Dictionary) is ‘a small close-knit group of people who do not readily allow others to join them’. Accyweb on the contrary always extends a warm welcome to new members, and new and old alike can put their bob’s worth in at any time. Therefore, Accyexplorer, the word ‘clique’ does not apply. Anyway, do you know any family that lives in perfect harmony and agrees on every subject all the time…I don’t! It would be very boring. |
Re: New Members
Hey, Guiness - read your post re the 'old folk' with interest, and me being in that category all I can say is that they don't make drinkers like they used to. Those were the days when 'hollow legs' were the norm. Some old timers would have put you to shame (and I'm not confessing to anything!).
|
Re: New Members
Quote:
I also like adding my "bobs worth" now and again (for those who hadn't noticed) :D On a side note,MP also assures me it's not a "clique"......it's a "family" so from now on I won't be using the C bomb :) |

Not all your posts make you seem like you are whining, some of them make you seem a complete moron. All of your input to this thread can be used as an example of this. |

Re: New Members
If it was a clique.....I am sure that after almost ten years as a member......I would have inveigled myself in by now.
I get quite upset when people talk about a clique.....why? Because I'm not in it......and if there was one......I would want to be in the sacrosanct inner circle.....I'm fed up of being just a pleb(goes away to sulk). |

All the forum data - posts, messages, pictures, settings etc are all stored in a MySql database and the forum runs on php and templates. As far as I know the only thing not plain text in the database is user passwords, they are encrypted by the users browsers using a one way algorithm before being sent to the server, only the encrypted password is stored. This is a standard internet way of handling passwords. Well you did ask  |
