the picture shows a 2-6-0 mixed freight loco about to tackle the baxenden bank. more than likely had a banking (assist) loco to get it to the top by hollands pies

There's a challenge for Accrington Library!

As regards 'the other train' in the original photo - it looks like empty stock in platform 1 - the Manchester bay. There was also a small goods yard on that side of the station

Actually it turns out it's not such a big challenge after all - there's a copy in the Local studies part of the reference library!
