Re: Today in pictures

When accyX said he liked the picture of the dog in the field...and would make a great mono shot......it got my cogs whirring.
I thought I would try a selective colour reduction on it.
I have got permission from G to post this...I just hope he likes it.
It isn't a better picture, just a different take on the same picture.

Re: Today in pictures

Today in Pictures is another of those yesterday in pictures posted today. A small mooch through the Dunkenhalgh Estate.

1. It was a cloudy, but still day, the silence only broken by the farmer mowing the field we were in.
2. This is Mill Woods, over the tree tops is the reservoir you can see from the road.(Hermitage Street)
3. Still Mill Woods, with the River Hyndburn meandering to the weir.
4. Its one of those pesky photographers.
5. Standing where the group were in the previous snap, looking back where the first pesky photographer was snapping the second pesky photographer.
6. Wading back to the shore, this is the same view but a tighter crop.
7. Devils Bridge.
8. The Dunkenhalgh Hotel is off to the right and up the hill.
9. Just a bit further along the wet bit.
10. Finally, a shot with my back to Devils Bridge.

I have had a look at the specs for what I think is your camera, is yours a 14 megapixel model.
If it is, then the model you have is absolutely okay, the maximum size we post pictures is 500kb so anything above that is discarded.
If you don't mind me asking a few cheeky questions it may help with why you are not getting the detail you are after.
Are you shooting on the auto setting?
Have you set a ISO setting?
And are you using an auto white balance setting?

Not a one, the farmer was mowing everything that was green so I suspect they had gone away to a field where they wouldn't be disturbed, I didn't see any wildlife at all come to think of it. Apart from the shoal of pigeons fleeing a shotgun.

I think my lens res is about 6.30 Mpixels....I do use the auto settings and don't set the ISO unless I'm doing light trails etc at night. I think it's down to lens quality why I'm losing the finer details.'

Today in pictures

You'll certainly get better results learning to use manual settings, as Dave said, with a file size limit of 500kb, any increase in mega-pixels will be lost anyway, that said, you can't beat a gadget upgrade.

Re: Today in pictures

Yes, a gadget upgrade is always fun.....half of it is getting to grips with the new controls and doodads, but I think it is easy to lose sight of the skills involved in taking a good shot.

I think you and Dave have got some really great pics because of those skills.....you can see what makes a good shot.
Not that I am saying that others who contribute don't have good skills......they have.

I think it is too easy to get so competitive in who has the best equipment, it really isn't about that....or for that matter who has taken the best shot....because they are all good...they all fulfill the criteria of the thread.

Dave mentioned a few posts back that it is about taking a snapshot of your day...getting out and about with whatever camera you have and snapping something that captures what you have seen, or what you have been doing.

Could I suggest, and I am not an expert, just enthusiastic, trying aperture priority (lower numbers for close up stuff and higher numbers for landscapes), using auto ISO, and setting white balance to cloudy or shade if you have it, unless it is very sunny.
I think the auto setting is fine for average conditions but too much light or dark and it over corrects losing detail as it does. Hope you don't mind me sticking my two pennyworth in, just trying to help.

Today in pictures

Just to add to Daves good advice, check to see if your web browser has an exif viewer add on (exify for Firefox) you can then see the settings others have used if the info hasn't been removed from the pic.
