Re: Bites !

Good to hear you got some treatment Lindsay. Hope it starts to get better now.

Hope you get sorted out too Mez.

I am sure all my swollen limbs began with a bite years ago. I've never been the same since but no doctor has ever taken that seriously. I have blown up like a balloon recently.

Re: Bites !

Sorry clever clogs but I was nowhere near any horses and wouldn't be by choice anyway cos I hate the bleeding clumsy daft things !
Thought as a health care professional you would have a bit more sense than to poke fun at what could have turned out to be a serious injury; their bites can carry Lyme's disease, typhoid and various other nasties to horrid to contemplate.

Is your type of horsefly the one that looks like a housefly, but with distinctive markings on the wing? If you are allergic to those little bastards, prevention is much easier, and more effective than cure. There must be some sort of repellant you can get; "Off" makes a good one. I used to be really allergic to them, but the more I got bit, it seemed that I built up immunity. Exposing yourself to them, may not be a good idea, though. About as effective as exposing oneself to a copper. Wow, it seems like I have been absolutely no help whatsoever. Sorry.

I was biten by an horsefly last summer 3 times on my leg, it took weeks for them to heal, the scars are still visable, I was in my garden and nowhere near horses, what does repell them though is citronella oil used to use it when I were out riding and it worked a treat.

It's all healed up and fine now thanks; but I have got scars ! Was told about citronella oil at work a couple of days back by a lady who reacts badly to bites and she said it works so it will be my next purchase and it's coming to Spain with me too just in case the mozzies fancy their chances!

We use citronella when we're dining al fresco at the caravan - it pongs a bit though.

Re: Bites !

I am always getting bitten and have to avoid places like Greece and Cyprus as the bites swell up so much and get infected I usually end up in casualty :( I really suffered last summer in this country (horsefly bites are real nasty) and have been recommended Mosi-guard as a prevention rather than a cure.

Did go into Boots and Superdrug for this and noone had ever heard of it! Read about it in a magazine and its a herbal "recipe" which is better for you as it doesn't contain Deet which can be quite bad for you. I still haven't managed to get hold of it yet and am just using a Boots own insect repellent. So far so good...
