The Last Chance
On Saturday 6th September at approx. 1240, the last two flying Lancaster Bombers will pass over Barnoldswick en route from Allerton Castle to Prestwick. This series of demonstrations will no doubt be the last time that the two fly together - one is British, part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and the other is Canadian and will be returning to Canada at the completion of this summer's displays.

Re: The Last Chance?
My sister phoned earlier and told me they were doing a display over Lancaster at weekend.
I forgot which day she told me it was being held. I have seen the British one flying a few times and it is a marvellous sight and sound. |
Re: The Last Chance?
I did a cut and paste for Sundays programme which comes closer to us
Sun 07-Sep PRESTWICK 13:00 L+L PORTRUSH 13:30 D L+L PRESTWICK 14:15 FP L+L WINDERMERE 14:50 FP L+L MORECOMBE 15:05 FP L+L HOLMFIRTH 15:25 FP L+L LUDFORD 15:45 FP Morecambe to Holmfirth probably takes them over Lancaster - no information on heights. |
Re: The Last Chance?
I was on holiday in Scarborough a few years ago and they had a fly past of a Lancaster over the castle. It was a magnificent sight . . . and sound.

Taken at the Southport Air show three years ago.
I hadn't time to change my lens for a longer one but it cropped out reasonably well. |
Re: The Last Chance
The sound of a Merlin- gorgeous, music.
The sound of four in sync- magic, an orchestra. |
Re: The Last Chance
We were at Southport a couple of weeks ago.....The Blackpool Airshow was on...and I am sure that one of the Lancasters flew overhead in the direction of Blackpool.
Was too damn slow getting my camera out of my bag to snap it.......I would have got a good shot too because it was flying quite low. |

Re: The Last Chance
I may be wrong but I'm sure I heard the sound of multiple Merlins somewhere over the Ribble estuary(Blackpool/Southport) between 11.30 and 12. Rushed outside and could hear them clearly but couldn't see anything. That sound is so distinctive.

Re: The Last Chance
Flights today cancelled due to bad weather.Check this website for up to date info..If and when the flight occurs over Blackburn, the best place to view would be from the top of Corporation Park.

Re: The Last Chance
I assume that they are flying over Thwaites Brewery and then on to Holmfirth. Grane Road, even Haslingden Old Road, may be good spots to get a decent site of them in the local vicinity.
BG may be able to advise on probable route, airways/min flight levels etc? |
The Last Chance
Got goosebumps as they just flew over the dunk, gutted I didn't have my camera but did video them with my phone. Will upload to YouTube later.

I managed to get a place to park in a factory gateway on the road just below the Observatory pub and the uneatable food takeaway outlet.
Within in ten minutes there were cars on the yellow lines and footpaths every where because it was a good place to look down into the town and the brewery. A police patrol car slowed down and thought better of moving us on and then the Lancs arrived. I was hoping the bomb doors would open over the last photo. Over and done with far too soon. |
Re: The Last Chance
My camera was upstairs...by the time I had gone and got it the big birds were gone leaving only their drone.

Re: The Last Chance
I eventually settled near the Britannia Inn on the Haslingden Rd. which was on the direct route, but oh no they flew further north then turned over Accy to go up the valley towards Haslingden,so they were too far away for good shots, and I could just hear the engine noise.Got home to Clayton,my next door neighbour said that they flew almost overhead---should have stood on my garage roof.C'est la vie!

Re: The Last Chance
Superb, gpic, well focused and the sound- terrific.
What sort of video camera did you use to get that sound? It's not easy filming planes, I always ended filming blank sky and never got sound like that. |
The Last Chance
It was just my phone Gordon. iPhone 5s.

It's not showing on my iPhone 5s or ipad. If it's still on the forum I will try on my PC. |

Re: The Last Chance
It's working for me now, strange, first just the sound then the end last few seconds.
Second time I got it all, nice one gpick. Especially with a phone. I zoomed in as close as I could to get them both in the same shot, I could have got a lot closer with only one in frame but the event called for them both. They were gone too quickly to try them individually. My sister rang me at 14.53 as they were passing over Morecambe and they appeared over Blackburn ten minutes later. We had made arrangements earlier that she would ring as they passed so I could leave the comfort of my car in time to take the photos. Well worth seeing together, a unique experience. Just a side remark, the last time I flew in a plane was 1960. It was a Beverley with no back doors, they took them off because we couldn't open them in flight and we wanted to chuck things out. I have a few photos taken at Blackbushe with and without the cargo doors. Toilet was an Elson pan behind a ground sheet, or stand at back and spray the crops. Sorry, I strayed away from the thread. |
Re: The Last Chance
I was watching cricket at Church CC and they came over head. I rang my daughter to tell her they were on their way and she saw them from her friends garden in Padiham. I managed to get couple of photos .

Is there also a canadian Spitfire? Took a tootle over to RAF Coningsby today, hoping to see the Lancasters out in the open but they were locked away in hangers ((managed a pic through an open fire door), but there was a Spitfire with the canadian leaf logo on the side (left plane in pic 2, just below cockpit).
See the today in pics thread later for some spitfire and Typhoons flight pics. |

My lad went to Duxford at the weekend. Waiting for the photos to be sent. He reckons it is the best one he has ever seen, and he has been to a lot being an RAF brat. Of course the fact that Duxford is part of the War Museum increases the pleasure with all the displays. He also enlightened me as to the whereabouts of the only remaining TSR2, as well as a myriad of other worthy exhibits.
We will certainly attempt to get there next year. |

Re: The Last Chance
Can anyone throw any light on two planes I saw flying low along the coast at Morecambe last Friday ? They were heading south so maybe something to do with the Southport show. They were not the Lancasters. No marking that I could see just plain grey colour.
Would love to know what they were. |
The Last Chance
The plainest grey planes I can remember from the show are the Canberra and hunter. If you look in the today in pictures thread I've some pics in there.

Thanks, very interesting, my Lad did say that there was also a fuselage section at Duxford. The parts location was interesting - possibly some ommisions, or parts have been moved - there were quite a significant number at The RAF College Cranwell in '71, some were actually used in demonstrations to our course. |

Re: The Last Chance
One of the items that really caught my interest was the windscreen - gold plated (can't remember how many microns), but it was incredible as it looked different from varying angles, we were told that it was to ensure the windscreens remained free of mist and ice, as well as giving some visual protection from thermo-nuclear "events" - guess that is the forerunner of heated and water sensor windscreens on cars.

This is thought to be the last ever Vulcan-Victor formation. The picture was taken by Neil Cottle from a Hercules in 1991. I understand there is one at Duxford (Victor), which is being considered for restoring to airworthiness

Re: The Last Chance
They siad at Southport airshow that best they can hope for is the Vulcan will fly to the end of next years air show season, after that (and maybe before) the engines will need too much work to continue.:(

https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer...U.kUw-sHunS1ps https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer...U.kr6xxU1U7Acg Is there any significance of it flying over Samlesbury Aerodrome? Re: The Last Chance
Possibly the direct route from Carlisle to M/C Airport approach. I think Barton is now known as City Airport - looks as though it could even be a grass strip.
|
Re: The Last Chance
The map shows it going via Windermere after Carlisle, A nice high view point is what I'm after so might head off up that way. A long way to go with no guarantees though.

From Cosford today, they had a big attendance, sort of ran out of parking spaces.
1) Slow pass over the runway 2) Climbing away 3) About 1 hour later after more people and cars turned up someone said 'they could get 4 or 5 (cars) in the Hercules'. |
Re: The Last Chance
I used to see the Vulcans returning to base in the '70,s.
They were part of the Cold War team. They seemed to follow the A1 south as far as Ferrybridge (where I used to park at night) then turn East towards Lincolnshire. They had already started to descend by then and was low enough to read the numbers on the side very clearly. It was an amazing sight and there was always at least four together. I saw the last Vulcan at Southport air show a few years ago and yesterday sat out in my garden with a 600mm lens on camera and never saw it pass, it must have been more to the west. |
Re: The Last Chance
It went from Windermere to Manchester, so flew over other side of Blackburn.

we went to Southport today.....had quite forgotten that it was the air show.
It took us two and a quarter very frustrating hours on the bus from Preston to Southport. We waited one hour and forty five minutes for a bus back......and i only managed to get two sodding measly pictures. My camera kept migrating to the bottom of my very large shopping bag......and it was only my little pocket camera. These are my shots. |
Re: The Last Chance
I was far too fumble fisted to get my camera out of my bag in time for the Red Arrows fly past.......I waited a while thinking they would make another pass......camera in my hot little hand...but they didn't do a second pass(well, not while I was stood watching).
I missed my walk along the pier too(it was closed off...don't know if it was just because of the air show or if there was some other reason).....it is my constitutional, my breath of sea air. I know, I know I'm a grumble guts! |

Re: The Last Chance
I don't think they needed to bomb Port Stanley runway. If they'd done a couple of low passes over it the whole Argy army would have been disabled, in agony with busted ear drums. The sound is phenomenal but what a graceful thing it is. Air shows won't be the same without it.
|
Re: The Last Chance
Yes you are right Gordon it was a noisy beast.
I always considered planes to be a 'boy' thing....but the sight and sound of that plane was magnificent.......and it really was so low. I could almost have shook hands with the pilot. I left the lampost and the fairground ride in the second shot so that you could get and idea of how low it really was. |
