first memory!
what is your first memory of accy?
|
Re: first memory!
my 5th birthday party in the old McDonalds upstairs bit where it smelled of chicken nuggets and feet eurch!
|
Re: first memory!
My Grandma's house in Sultan Street.
Then after we moved here, Peel Park School. |
Re: first memory!
My first memory of Accy was getting the bus on Saturday mornings with my mum and baby sister (Grego). We would catch the bus in Church to Accy to go to the market. At that age (3-4) I thought that Accy was massive. I remember the round toilets on Union St and the crossing on Broadway with the railings going up the road. I remember going into the back entrance of Woolworths and the massive car park on Union St. I remember being frightened of going into the library because it looked so big, and my mum said that we had to be really quiet or the lady would shout at us.:D
|
Re: first memory!
Going to the pictures on Broadway. I can remember it really clearly - where the box office was, the benches and which unit was down which corridor.
School trips to James St (I think??) swimming baths. |
Re: first memory!
:) My earliest memory is probably playing hide and seek on the site of the old Foundry on Maudsley St, across from the New Brewery pub, which my nan and Grandad owned.

Re: first memory!
My first memory of Accy is of the (old) covered market being built, probably about 1961/62.... I also remember tomorrow's date (November 22nd) in 1963, the assassination of Kennedy. I don't think he ever came to Accy, though.

Happy birthday shakermaker although it,s still yesterday here, it must be tomorrow there already??!!
My first memory of Accy, we lived in a confectioners on Nelson St and the smell of fresh bread and custard pies still lingers, even after more than 50 years. |
Re: first memory!
My first memory of Accy is walking there from Ossy with my Nan. She was pushing my brother in a big coach built pram. I was two and a half, so it must have been the summer of 1967.
We stopped at a cafe on the way there that used to be at Church, on the corner diagonally opposite the Commercial pub. She bought me a lucky bag. As well as various sweets inside it had a big rubber mouse in it, and I wasn't happy so I cried. I was expecting a better toy, or perhaps some jewellery. |
Re: first memory!
First real memory is being in a chip shop in Henry Street, Church, and pulling a lady's earring because it was shiny and dangly. I must have been very small, because I remember I was being carried by my uncle. I can also remember falling into the (very old fashioned) washing machine, thankfully the water had gone only just warm, and being pulled out by my legs by my screaming aunt! I think I must have been a horrible child, but ask Mez, she will probably confirm it!
|
Re: first memory!
First memory of Accy was my grandma's house in Willows lane, 1941 and being taken for a walk by grandad.
|
Re: first memory!
Hi tinkerbell. I just found out from your post that your granny and grandad were owners of the New Brewery. Thats the one on the other end of the block from the Royal Oak in Meadow st. I think. In the panorama of Accy that I speak about in the thread 'Coppy torn assunder' you can see the N.B. quite clearly. Just thought I,d let you know
|
Re: first memory!
to be honest my first memory of accy isnt realy my first memory ..
i moved here in 1981 but in the summer of 81 just 2 months after moving here i was involved in an accident which left me with a 3 month memory loss which i have never got back so my first memory of accy is when i was brought home from the hospital and seeing my brothers waiting for me at our house which to me was the the first tiem i had seen it as far as my memory goes. from what i have been told i had made friends but i had to go through all the process of getting to know them al over again and luckily they were a honest bunch as they could have said i had borrowed money and i wouldnt have known any better lol |
Re: first memory!
Its 15 years since I moved here so cant recall first memories only first impressions and my first impression of accy/hyndburn was and still is that its the most racist place I have ever lived in. In fact it was quite a shock at the time.
We always remember the bad more than the good.. I still think this is a very racist area.. but the good of accy easilly out balances that one bad side and thats why I am happy to live here and bring up my family here... lay down roots and never want to move... Just because I see it as a highly racist area doesn't mean I have to change my values or bring up my children differently.. I can ignore it and work around it... Nevertheless it stays with me as my first real impression. OI!!! I was asked and thats my answer... Sod it.. I had too much karma anyways :) |
Re: first memory!
dont wory about the racism kipax we at accy web have got used to having you around it wont be long before the rest of accy catches on ;)

I've been a northerner in south London, a grockle in Cornwall, and a soft English git in Glasgow. I've found Accy no more racist than anywhere else I've lived, and a lot less so than a lot of places. |

Like I posted earlier I've lived all over the UK, and in my opinion Accy/Hyndburn is a lot less racist than many other places. You haven't even said whose being racist here? The whites, the Asians, the Europeans???? A little more detail might back up your offensive statement. |

I disagree with your statement, and give reasons and evidence that in my opinion you are wrong. So far you have given no evidence that Accy is anymore racist than anywhere else in the country. |

Re: first memory!
oh and if you are under the assumption that i am upset then we may as well end it here.... why oh why do the accyweb mafia always think everyone is upset just because people dissagree with them
if i am upset then i dont sit here typing on accyweb.. i do this cus i enjoy myself.. your a very sad man if you think people sit here upset... |
Re: first memory!
I am still lost as to where I ahve said its the most racist place in the country.. you just quoted its the most racist place i ahve lived..
if your going to accuse me of somehting then have the bottle to back it up.. i ahve never said its the most racist place in the country and you can have a third attempt to show i have if you like.....:) or you can admit your wrong... but your not going to do that are you... |

so let me get this right.. I never said it was the most racist place in the country and as much as rindykins has tried to prove otherwise.. he couldnt...
what i said was that its the most racist place i ahve lived.... thats my impression and i was offering it as an answer to the thread.. others will ahve other impressions.. i have mine and a member of the accyweb mafia all on his own without all his friends has failed in his attack of my post... lesson to be learnt.. always have the rest of the sheep with you when you go out attacking other accyweb members or you get your (addy on bit: internet) butt kicked hahahaha |

Re: first memory!
Is this what AccyWeb is going to turn into?
An almost 70 post long thread wonder and bitching session. Maybe if you gents tried sleeping you would not be so cranky. Hopefully a moderator will come along and delete all this drivel so the original thread can continue. |
Re: first memory!
no one was cranky so mega whooooosh to uncle neil who feels the need to tell people off on accyweb.. who voted you everyones dad?
i was drunk... rinders is gullible and i already apologised to the OP and more than doubled her karma while doing so :) But if it makes you feel superior then feel free to tell us off some more.. whatever does it for you uncle busybody... |
Re: first memory!
I find it very disapointing that as a moderator on the Stanley side of the forum you act like that on this side of the forum. If this was the Stanley forum you would have just deleted all the rubbish post's above.
|
Re: first memory!
you just cant stop moaning can you... where was i when you where voted the forum thought chief... try minding your own business..
also you have your facts wrong also when i said feel free to continue telling us off if it makes you feel better that was sarcasm.. i didnt think you would keep doing it... DUH! |

Re: first memory!
The first memory I have of Accy is watching the Sacred Heart procession. I was standing with my mum opposite the church, I must have been about 2 years old, and I saw a group of nuns line up, with their backs to us, on the grass beside the church. I can remember shouting out, very excitedly, "Look, Mummy, black ghosts". :)
My second memory is watching the Accrington Trades Carnival, in about 1947. There was a lorry from Rishy Crisps and they were throwing bags of crisps to the crowds. I caught one and my mother made me share them with the little boy who was with us, with his mum, (I think his name was David but I can't remember who he was). I was not best pleased. My most abiding memory is the Market. I used to go there nearly every Saturday, from about the age of 9 (alone - you could, then), to wander about and spend my pocket money. In my teens I used to go to a stall that sold Ladies clothes and I could buy lovely tops for 19/6 (about 95p) and nylon stockings for 1/11 (9p). I was OK because up to leaving school, aged 16, I got 10/- a week (50p) from my dad - quite a tidy sum in those days. :D |
Re: first memory!
my first memory of acccrington was the red and blue hyndburn transport buses, i remember thinking to myself when i first moved here how cheap it was to get on one, no wonder htey are no longer around!
|
Re: first memory!
I remember going to the market, WestEnder - you could get stockings for 1/- as well. It was safe in those days - I was allowed to go to the pictures on my own at about 10, in those happy days when the Palladium and the Empire had two different pictures a week. I think the Queens Hall (later the Tudor) only had one, but it meant you could go five times in a week and never see the same film twice - and it was cheap!
