Anybody remember the old Irish League club in ossy, think it was on the corner of Simpson Street, its now a doctors surgery, or it was the last time I looked:rolleyes:

I used to work for a firm that supplied the Irish League with cigarettes, tobacco etc. Every month they used to order '1 gross matches', we always sent them 'England's Glory'. Every month we got them back with a note saying 'This brand of matches unacceptable, please deliver alternative'.:)

yep when the groups were on, had some good nights, one of em,the group singer was crap,so me mate jumped on stage, took the mic off him, said summat to the group, n proceded to sing "Emile Ford" what do ya wanna make those eyes at me for, n got the biggest clap of the night.:D:D:D:D

The shop called Saul's was in Black Abbey St. He lived in Blackpool, my father once asked him why he did'nt put he real name on the sign, R. Saul., his reply was, yes and you local wags would have a real time with that.

The first owner of the shop was called Bob Holt.

The houses for the firemen in Manchester Rd, did have a cummunal area at the back, but they had inside toilets.
The only thing out back was a coal bunker and a dustbin.

My Auntie used to work in that shop (mace), was owned by a chap called Harry Smith and his wife, think he died not that long ago!

Harry & Queenie Smith ran the shop, and had a daughter Barbara
May Woods & Peggy Birtwell worked in the shop inthe early 60,s

The off licence was run by Hilda & Joe Grundy. and Gordon Addison before
them
I earned 5 bob a week bringing all the beer & soft drinks up from the cellar
for Hilda & Joe
May Woods also worked in the off licence for Hilda & Joe

All my family were members of the club for many years.

All members kids were treated to a day trip to Southport once a year,we all got a bottle of pop,a bag of crisps on the coach, 5 bob to spend,and fish & chips for tea
Great days out!
James St club also did the same [but we went by train]

One member once sang GOD SAVE THE QUEEN at the end of a free & easy night , the commitee thought that this was also unaccepable

In the sixties my best mate was a guy called Gordon Addison (Lefty), but I'm sure it couldn't have been the same chap SA, Lefty worked for the Coop, then the family emigrated to Australia, but came back soon after, he then joined the Police and moved to Morecambe as a detective, haven't heard of him for over twenty years
