Sorry, ladies, here is the proof from the cover of an old Stanley programme currently on ebay. Just look closely at the ad in the middle of the page...

1953/4 Accrington Stanley v Barnsley programme on eBay, also League Fixtures 1950-1958, League Fixtures, Football Programmes, Sports Memorabilia (end time 03-Feb-08 10:24:19 GMT)

Don't think so, the example shown was from 1953/54, and the very same ad was still running on the cover of 1960 programmes (obviously, the Melbo's owner believed in the power of advertising!). I've seen a fair few examples from various seasons and it's always shown as Melbo. Reckon if it was a printer's error, it would have been corrected at some point over the intervening six years!

It was. Shopper's World was like an early Argos. You ordered what you wanted from a catalogue, and everything was stored out of sight.

I used to work there panther, it was owned by Ray Lyndon, I managed the DIY store upstairs, it was called Croftspell. The people who owned the cafe were from Bolton, they used to make great bacon butties which were not right popular with Mr Lyndon

If I recall - Mrs Lyndon was a "Briggs". Her parents lived next door but 2 to me on Manchester Road. For the life of me I can't remember the twins names but Anthony rings a bell. There were also two older siblings - Steven and Daryl who will be in there 40's now. I used to walk to school with Steven who always dressed somewhat rebelious. IE White short skinners and high leg docs and Bay City Roller scarfs !!!!

Quite right I think she was called Pat, Steven was from her first marrage to a lad Called Neville Escathe(I think that was his name, his first name was definitely Nev, I worked with him in the sixties), I'm no sure, but I think Ray adopted him, because his last name was Lyndon. The twins were called Anthony and Deryle or Daz as he liked to be called. Pat also had a sister who was landady of the Queens at one time, but when I worked at the store she was the manageress.

Could well be West Ender and thats how my neville spelled his name is me who's a mupet at spelling, as for being 70 i'm not sure I knew he was older than me but I didn't think that much older. I'm 62 next birthday, but I'm sure he wasn't 8 years older, he use to mate out with George Gibson, and Travis Brierly who were both joiners as were both Neville and myself, I'll do a bit of digging and see what I come up with

It may not be the same person, Jaysay, but it's not a common name. I know he was a bit older than me, I'm 65, but maybe he's not reached 70 yet. I didn't know him well, I think the family moved when I was quite young.

I remember "skating" on the Swanee in the days when we used to get snow and ice in Winter. Also picking cotton grass seeds which we were convinced was the same as the American stuff the mills made into cloth. I think that's why it was called the Swanee.

Talking about old shops, I was thinking the other day jus how many shops have gone or changed use in Union Road Ossy, since I was a lad, 50 years ago. Oposite St. Pauls school there was Nellie Barnes green grocer Makinsons sweet shop, a pram shop, can't remember the name. Further up there was Walmsley's hairdressers and Kershaws Ladies and Gents Hairdressers, and not forgetting the post office both at the Town Hall (sorry Gayle, civic theatre) and Moorend, its quite depressing realy, anybody know any more

the sunken gardens before they built the Arndale centre?

Remember the gardens well, they used to have chains with spikes on between small stone pillars, and a car park at the back, I think the Arndale was built in the late fifties, but if I'm wrong I'm sure some one will piont it out

When I started work at Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance, we were in an office in the building, over the shops, in the block next to the corner bank, looking straight down Broadway. I started there in 1959 - I think that the gardens were built on sometime between 1962 and when the office moved to Melbourne House in 1965.

Felt like I made an elderly gentleman's day today.

Daughter was in her surgery in Dewsbury with a 75 year old called Jeff. Seems he had lived in Accrington at one time, for quite some time. They had got chatting and told her that he used to do ballroom dancing here (bit of a champion I think) and couldn't remember the names of the ballrooms.

She rang me from her mobile, and I gave her as many as I could remember and the bands, and could hear him saying "Oh, yes", etc. Was lovely to to be able to bring back memories for him. Seems he taught Russian history whilst he was here.

Told my daughter to point him to our web .. hope he turns up. :)

Not a local celebrity but who remembers Reginald Molehusband. I think quite a few of his relatives try to park on the Arndale car-park. Apparently the original film has been lost and a new one made with the actor (he's about 80 now) who made the first one, for which he was paid the princely sum of £10.

This is the story of Reginald Molehusband, married, two children, whose reverse parking was a public danger. People came from miles just to see it. Bets were laid on his performance. What he managed to miss at the back, he was sure to make up for at the front. Bus drivers and taxis changed their routes to avoid him. Until the day that Reginald Molehusband did it right. Not too close, far enough forward... come on Reginald... and reverse in slowly... come on.... and watching traffic... and park perfectly! Well done Reginald Molehusband, the safest parker in town.

If anyone has a copy of the original you can ask a lot for it!

Neil, my mum does remember your mum's shop, now that I've shown her the photograph, but now wants to know when it opened, as she thinks it used to be a bric-a-brack shop, where she bought a water colour from with her first wage?

Mothers_Shop_1_.JPG :: thanks to Derek Mooney for this Photo Mothers Shop. My mother had a drapery shop at No.70 union road. (opposite the end of Queen Street) and this photo was taken 18th July 1964 when Union Road was flooded. Where the shop stood

Incidentally, the 18th of July 1964 was the day when we had terrible floods in east Lancashire. A friend of my grandpa's bakers shop was washed away at Rising Bridge, and that day my grandpa was taking my mum and dad to London, to get the boat train to Nice, and the roads were so bad they nearly missed it. Happily I was asleep in my mum's tummy at the time.:D

Remember that Saturday well, I have never seen it rain so hard since, it started at 11am and by 1pm it was a lovely sunny day, The area that is now the Foxhill nature reserve was under water, so was the land opposite the Nash Club

The Arndale shops were built 1959/61. At the time, the M&S was the first new Marks branch to be opened in the UK since the war. Does anybody remember those pale blue, modernistic-looking fountains that were constructed at each end of Broadway?

It is a pink block of compressed tooth cleaner in a round tin. You rub your wet toothbrush on the block to load the brush. (after removing the pleated cellophane wrap shown)

another pic
