Re: do you remember.....?
M&S used to have a side enterance as well, opposite the Pickwick pub that was. There was a large bin area next to the enterance like the one on Union street.I also remember, back in the days when Broadway was'nt pedestrianised,K Taxis bieng next to the cinema. It was nothing more than a cubby hole, but a good pick up/fighting place after last orders in the Pickwick. And it took me & my mates to Rishton then to Bash for 2 quid:eek:
I too recall the side enterance to Woolies & their food counter, sold some delicious processed cheese:) And then there was Igloo on union st. 20 burgers for a quid......still waiting for the mad cow disease to kick in:( |

Think it probably closed in late 50's/early 60's. Don't remember the double seats, Margaret, but, then again, you don't really notice things like that when your mum's taking you to see Bambi!

The Palace was near the bottom of Rhyddings St opposite the mill. There are new houses there now. It was owned and run by Mr Saporiti. He used to turn the heating up so he could sell more icecream, and was at the door as you arrived and left. My parents had 4 balcony front row seats booked for us every Saturday night. That was in the days before television. |

sidewalk 54 was originally called the astronaut and had a spacemans suit hanging in the upstairs window, also h wisemans the record and music store on broadway opposite woolies, and the grocers at the to were swintons insurance is now, catlows fruit and veg i think,i can remeber the unit 4 cinema when it was the CLASSIC and then pickwicks, which became shifters and them rumours i think, there was a good back alley up the side of the pictures were you could go and get a knee trembler after the pub closed if you were lucky, any one else remeber these places
|
Re: do you remember.....?
My sister had a Saturday job at Catlow's fruit and veg shop.
|
Re: do you remember.....?
I used to be friends with the catlow family. used to live on whalley road
|
Re: do you remember.....?
My mother used to work at Catlows when they were at the top end of broadway......the Catlow brothers used to take pity on my Mum because they knew she had 7 of us. They used to give her bags full of bruised apples...we didn't care that they were bruised and used to eat them like they were going out of fashion - my mother used to tell us off by saying 'do you think those apples grow on trees?' and we would all fall about laughing at the ridiculous question.
We used to get black bananas too......I think I was about 14 before I realised that bananas were yellow :) |

parker franks?....nooo |
Re: do you remember.....?
Accy Grammar and Accy Tech were two completely different places. Accy Tech, where Cashy went, was on Union Road, opposite the Palladium. It was still there last time I went past but I don't know what it's used for. Accy Grammar (which is the pic shown on the site that Panther found) was on Blackburn Road. The Grammar School left that building in 1968 and moved into some horrible concrete monstrosity on Queens Road West (which someone told me has been demolished), before going comprehensive a few years later. After the Grammar School vacated the Blackburn Road building, it was used as a sort of annexe for Accy College. My missus learned English and typing there when she came to this country in the mid-80's.
