My mum phoned his rather posh mum (they lived in Wiswell, and had a study, so they were posh to us,) and told her he would probably need a 'kag'. Not knowing what a 'kag' was, they apparently drove all the way to Skipton, to a boating shop, thinking it was some specialist equipment, only to find out a kag was a nylon anorak, that folds up to a handy size, and is pefect if it starts to pour down in the rainy Lake District.:D |
Re: do you remember.....?
I've got the giants causeway version of it hanging in my hallway. The only thing is it looks more like the plastic coats that were the fashion in the 80s.

Re: do you remember.....?
I remember when the Odeon Cinema had contiuous pictures. There used to be long queues. The old fish markets and tripe stalls. Joe Morts and Knowlemere Street. Winkle pickers and teddy boy's. I could go on forever.

Re: do you remember.....?
Just thinking about shops in town I remember the blue dahlia cafe on Dutton St, Kenyons cafe on broadway, near to there I think there was something called the golden kitchen, Dellstar Travel agents on broadway next door to some kind of d i y shop, there was Boots on Blackburn road, which I can remember had kind of metal circles stick to its glass doors, EJ Rileys toy shop and Wardleworths on Little Blackburn road, Babyland top of Warner St on corner, Fowlers fabrics and a cafe which I cant remember the name of opposite town hall. Further up little blackburn road was Pendle travel agents and a fent shop with a very old man in it. There was the womble inn opposite yorkshire bank which sold chicken butties and stuff, Tiger lilies clothes shop in what is now Baileys on church st. Just above the bus station on the right hand side going up was a large ladies clothes shop but I've forgotten the name of it.
|
Re: do you remember.....?
Just remembered some more - Pauls for school uniforms on little blackburn road, classic cinema (which always seemed to smell of cats), Marys music opposite hope and anchor, record exchange at the top of little blackburn road, really good hot potatoes with butter on in little bags from a stall on the market, ali's stall which I think was clothes and Relayvision on the corner of broadway. I can remember the huge car park on what is now the arndale with the toilets in that space age building.
|
Re: do you remember.....?
When Broadway was a sunken garden, I used to sit with my mum and have an ice lollie from the cinema.
When the market was in Peel Street The UCP Tripe shop on Blackburn Road The New Era (when it first opened) and the dances Holidays with the Youth Club (Austria) Mods driving up and down Blackburn Road outside the Market hall Sitting and listening to Radio Luxemburg on the bench at the bottom of Barnfield Street Big Ben anyone know what that was?? |
Re: do you remember.....?
BIG Ben was a bottle of ale brewed by Thwaites.;) a damn good un.:D
|
Re: do you remember.....?
I remember a lot of the Accy stuff mentioned on here. I also used to sit on the 'big hill' on Barnfield st listening to radio Luxemburg. I also 'grew up' on number 1 stall and used to be one of the itinerants who frequented the copper kettle cafe I was 14 at the time. Lol
|
Re: do you remember.....?

Re: do you remember.....?

I remember meeting others at the No 1 stall, a lot of the lads used to play snooker at the Elite club? think it was that. Used to sit for hours in the Blue Dahlia much to parents alarm. Copper kettle another haunt.
The walled area in front of the market hall was the deck where everyone met up at the weekend. Used to frequent the pub that was where the old cinema used to be on Broadway, packed to the doors most nights, then up to the pub on Church Street or I think one at the bottom near the viaduct? |

The burnt down Glynn Webbs was once Asda (opened 1961) but before that it was Nightingales car showroom - hence the ramp for getting the car to the display area.
See the Cinema thread for more details about the original use of the buildings in that area http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...s-31961-5.html |

Just looking through an old magazine.Back to 1966. I was 18 at the time. No 1,record, Four Tops, Reach out, I'll be there. No 2, Stop, stop, stop. The Hollies. The Hollies walk out of a Ready, Steady, Go telerecording session after discovering that the Dave Clark Five are to top the bill. Alma Cogan dies from cancer. John Maus of the Walker Brothers describes Scott as moody, irresponsible and a pain in the neck. Denny Lane, leaves the Moody Blues. Mick Jagger arrives at a Pink Floyd Concert, with new girlfriend Marianne Faithfull, though he's supposedly living with Crissie Shrimpton,( some things never change ). Movies of that year, Bonnie & Clyde, Georgy Girl . same Year , Aberfan Disaster, and lastly. Johnny Kidd dies in a car crash. Hard to believe it was all over 40 yrs ago.

And yet another question, Bee.
Do you remember, if you left the Pickwick, turned right, and then walked diagonally across the carpark to come out on it's middle entrance on Union St, you came up right against the Accy Superloo? That was the thing that looked like the top half of a boiled egg, again sliced in half. Well, I've been having an argument with a mate of mine. I say those loos were fitted out with Carrara Marble; he says Portland stone. Which one of us is right? Please let Bee answer before anyone else jumps in. |

There was one in Tooting. The only boozer we never went in. Come to think of it, I think they might have done a bit of undertaking in there as a side-line. The Accy one? I'm just pleased, with so many pubs closing down, someone's using this town centre building, and spent money on it. |

Does anyone remember my Grandad and Nanna's Confectioner's/Bakers on Haywood Road (near Accy Vic. Hospital) - half-way down on a corner on the right? They closed down in the 1980's when they retired and the shop became a house -they were well-known for their Pie and Peas. They made all kinds of bread but i especially remember the cream cakes....didn't get to eat too many though!

Digital music is a wonderful thing but it doesn't have the same atmosphere as a record. |
