Rovers standard of play

Watched Rovers - Charlton last night - what a load of rubbish.
Am a great rovers fan and am sad to see the standard we've dropped to.
I know I'm used to watching Serie A and the standard is much higher over here than English football in general, but even compared to teams like Chelsea, Arsenal and Man U, Rovers just don't seem to have what it takes this year, even with the line-up they have.
What annoys me the most is the slopiness and lost balls, seems like watching Serie C2 over here. Also, why keep Baggio and Gallagher on the bench til the 80th? They were probably only ones that created anything decent in the 10 mins they were on. Come on Rovers, wake up!

Roy 21-10-2003 09:43

Re: Rovers standard of play

Have to admit I agree, I went on last night, the first time for 5 years. Fortunately it was only £10 otherwise I would have been asking for my money back. The standard of both teams was less than the conference/non league sides I am used to watching! I'll carry on paying my money over at stanley thank you very much!

10 quid? Talk about a fool and his money easilly parted. ;D

Rovers will soon be where they belong. A mid table first division side along with Burnley a lower first division side.

Whats the betting up there as to when Souness gets his P45?

adi 21-10-2003 11:01

Re: Rovers standard of play

how fickle are football fans?

this is the same Blackburn Rovers that finished SIXTH yes believe it SIXTH in the Premiership last season.

i admit that Rovers (by their own high standards) have had a poor start to the season but every side goes through one in a campaign and hopefully this is Rovers.

lets be honest though - although they lost last night, they where still the better team (im not saying Charlton where or are a good side) and deserved something from it.

as for Souness getting his P45 - i doubt that very much indeed, ask any PROPER Rovers fan and they will tell you that he's the best manager we have had behind Kenny Dalglish.

Tealeaf 21-10-2003 12:27

yes they did but rovers had dunn and duff, where are they??playing in teams way above rovers.............
from a burnley fan..........lmao @ rovers........we'll be playing them next season in div 1.

or by the way....charlton deserved to win last night, better passing, better skill, more heart and can score goals!

come on rovers fans give me the boos now! ::)

Jo 22-10-2003 07:14

Re: Rovers standard of play

I thought Charlton played equally bad football as Rovers.
Also agree that Souness has been a great manager, but I can't justify some of his recent choices. He's certainly made some money for the club, his buying good players whilst still blooming and then selling them at a good profit, but frankly I'm not a share holder, so I don't care much about that, just want to see some decent fooball.

adi 22-10-2003 08:16

i'll take you up on that offer of a pint Tealeaf.

i still believe that Souness will be in charge at the Rovers come the end of the season.

I totally disagree.Souness has bought some players that are obviously past it.Amoruso for one.Looking back at the game in Turkey he was not up to scratch for international football. After spending all that money one would like to see something for it and to be blunt we have not at the moment.Hope the tide changes soon

Jo 24-10-2003 11:27

Re: Rovers standard of play

Well said, Mik, I agree Souness has bought some wicked players, but he's also sold some damn good ones - sometimes the economics have priority over the footballing. Lets hope things start picking up so I can come to Dorfen and watch the decisive match when they're about to win the league...... ;D

Re: Rovers standard of play

Looking back to last season where we came 6th.Up until about the last 8 games we were down in the relegation zone.then a series of good wins brought us up to that position.Agreed we did well. What is happenning at the moment seems to be that any players disagreeing with Souness will be sold on eg. Dunn. The same happenned at MU with Beckham. The players will decide however. If they are not happy with the manager they just play crap, get bad results and the board sacks the manager.

Re: Rovers standard of play

Without a change of manager,Rovers are finished in the premier this season. The problem is  this: Who will replace Souness. We know Parkes will do for for a while - after that, who.

Knowing Blackburn, they will probably leave it to late before they act, anyway.

George Walker 03-11-2003 13:55

Re: Rovers standard of play

It's quite simple. Rovers need to get a new manager in place and to have a good "feel" of the existing team ahead of the Transfer Window, which I believe is January...so unless Souness can get a big improvement by early December, he's on his bike. End of Story.

They're boring alright.....but that would'nt be to bad if they managed to win some silver for the mantlepiece occaisionally. They're just a bunch of all-round failures. And I just cannot understand the logic of rewarding failure with an extended contract & a pay increase for Erikson.

Re: Rovers standard of play

:rose8: Just watched the game on e ticket from the Liverpool site this may explain how bad Rovers were.
NEWS STORYHESKEY INSPIRES REDS TO 4-NIL ROUT
Paul Rogers 04 April 2004 http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/images4/lf...ers_120_01.jpg Two strikes for Michael Owen and an own goal from Andy Todd inside 23 minutes ensured Liverpool's Champions League hopes remain firmly in their own hands. Emile Heskey grabbed a fourth late on to complete the rout. With Newcastle putting four past Everton on Saturday to move into fourth place overnight, a victory today was nothing less than vital. That the match was effectively over as a contest after 23 minutes helped explain Blackburn's position in the table. Of all the teams to visit Anfield this season in the Premiership, only Portsmouth have looked a worse side than this one currently managed by Graeme Souness.

That's not to say that Liverpool didn't deserve their lead. They did and despite El-Hadji Diouf setting up Owen's second (Liverpool's third) and seeing his own cross turned in by Andy Todd, it was Emile Heskey who deserved most of the praise for Liverpool's sensational start to the match.

Heskey was quite brilliant in the first-half. His control and first touch were exceptional, his unselfish play set Owen up on more than one occasion and he was unlucky not to score himself early on when he struck a shot just over the bar from outside the area.

The Reds took the lead after six minutes when Harry Kewell found Heskey who in turn set up Owen to drill the ball home past Friedel. Todd then put the ball into the back of his own net as he attempted to cut out a cross from Diouf.

The third goal was the best of the lot though. Diouf played Owen through in space and the Reds striker smashed the ball on the run past Friedel in the Blackburn goal. It was vintage Owen and demonstrated just what we were missing last week against Leicester City.

Liverpool's fourth saw Milan Baros, on for Michael Owen, tee Heskey up after 78 minutes with only Friedel to beat. Beat him he did with a low strike to cap a memorable afternoon and a Man of the Match display.

Final score: Liverpool 4 - 0 Blackburn

If Souness lives up to his usual way of doing things he will have got rid of all the players who argue with him or dont see it his way, taken the team to the brink of finals, blamed everybody except himself, then will leave saying the supporters put pressure on the board or the players dont respect him. Sounds familiar, it should Liverpool were with out doubt the best team in Europe when he took over and are still trying to recover from his years of miss management.

Bagpuss 05-04-2004 19:57

Re: Rovers standard of play

I can't agree with you Bazf, Liverpool were already on the way down when Souness took over he just took us even further down which will never be forgotten. I agree that Souness is one of those people who will blame anyone but himself and until he accepts that some of his signing are not fit to wear a Blackburn shirt there is no hope. Personally I would love Rovers to go down along with Leeds as my life would a lot quieter not having to listen to rubbish I've had to listen to for the past few years.

Bazf 10-04-2004 16:08

Re: Rovers standard of play

Just looked at skynews, lost1-2 to leeds cant say Im sorry to here that, Mr Bagpuss the nice thing about Liverpool supporters is that they can agree to disagree and I think your stand for souness is great but a quote from Liverpoolfc.tv

"However his time as manager at the club has become synonymous with mistakes, ill-judged media representation, poor transfer decisions and falling standards on the pitcIn other respects as Souness himself reflected in December 1999 "in the right place at the wrong time". He explains: "What has happened since has gone to prove that I was not to blame for all the ills...my problem was that I tried to change it too quickly." He admits that he was shocked to the core by a change in the attitude amongst his squad and that this led to rapid hiring and firing as he sought to remove players who despite ability, offended this dedicated professional: "I found the change of mood in the dressing room both startling and alarming. How could standards have slipped so badly?".
Souness is an intelligent, articulate and highly motivated man, he was an awesome captain for the club and gave his all to the job as manager. Sadly his memory is still tarnished, but perhaps in time his faults will be forgiven and his valuable F A Cup win given the appreciation it is deserved.

Your missing the point!!! Rovers need premiership. Division 1=Mates taking the p**s out of me!

At least you have had this season to get used to your mates taking the p**s, you don't need to be in the premiership to get stick I've had to put up with it for years now.
