Bluest Eyes in Texas - The Cardigans.

This song was written by Restless Heart. I prefer the version by The Cardigans, the voice of Nina Persson lends itself to this song perfectly, also the musical arrangement is quality.

I first heard this song on the soundtrack to Boys Don't Cry, for which Hillary S**** won Best Actress at the 2000 Oscars ceremony. It is used during the film and to great effect whilst the closing credits roll.

Footnote: Doesn't this language filter just totally, utterly, absolutely, f*!King-well pi$$ you off? Nice one, Mr C! The flipside of R. Dean's Wigan Casino biggie "There's A Ghost In My House" I do believe.

I'm currently listening to the 9-CD boxset "The Complete Stax-Volt Singles 1959-1968" packed with King Otis, Sam & Dave, Booker T., Rufus Thomas, Eddie Floyd etc - winners all the way. It takes about 10 hours to listen to the lot, but when you're laid up after a double hernia operation and there's no Stanley to watch, time hangs heavy...

Re: What song/music/muzak are you listening to right now?

I rarely stray from the Stanley forum, but this thread is much too tasty to miss !

Wynonie's tastes coincide with my own in respect of the Stax (and, may I suggest, Chess) material. As the Hammond organist (we didn't call it "keyboards" in those days) in the Soul Survivors I used to love playing this stuff. Also the late, great Edwin Starr featured heavily in our repertoire . . . Headline News was a particular favourite of mine.

However, once that genre had lost a little of its impact I started listening to the white Americans who were producing some fine music in the late 60s and early 70s. And Steely Dan are the greatest musicians to emerge from those times.

Later, I got a lot of pleasure in the 70s from Andrew Gold , and particularly from Rupert Holmes (an Englishman who moved to the states at a young age).

This will probably sound a bit daft to many of you very knowledgeable music lovers, but I rate Rupert Holmes far above other singer-songwriters such as Elton John. Of course, Rupert is remembered largely for his popular hit "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)", but he has written and performed some amazing stuff which is of a much higher standard.

So, in response to the original question, I spend most of my free time listening to what I consider to the best four albums of all time.

1) Rubber Soul by The Beatles

2) Revolver by The Beatles

3) Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys

4) Pursuit Of Happiness by Rupert Holmes

Henry, two weeks ago today, I was standing in the very room that used to be the Chess recording studio - 2120 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago. FANTASTIC ! That must have been some experience ! I never visited the studio , and I admit that I didn't know where it was.

When I first went to Chicago for a music trade show, 25 years ago , I took a Gray Line tour to get familiar with the city's history. When we were on State Street the driver pointed out some bullet holes in the wall (where John Dillinger was killed by the FBI) and said that the nearby , down some steps , was a great old blues club where all the "greats" had played.

He listed those names which you mention, and others including Champion Jack Dupree.
I told him that Jack had lived in Halifax for some years with his Yorkshire-born wife , and we often got together for a jam-session and a few drinks (Jack loved Black Velvet - Guinness and Champagne - but he'd settle for a whiskey anytime.)
The driver just wouldn't believe me !

In the Westin Hotel, N.Michigan Ave , I met up with a few musos from Essex , including Dave Roberts who was the UK's demonstrator for Gibson guitars. Dave asked me if I liked BB King , and of course I replied in the affirmative. "Well", continued Dave, "Turn round and I'll introduce you to him". The blues guitar legend had been sitting at the next table ! I was totally awestruck, but he was a really friendly man. Dave asked him "Will you be bringing Lucille with you tomorrow ?", to which Mr. King answered "I don't think so because of insurance problems". I wondered who this mysterious woman was , but of course they were referring to his fabulous Gibson ES Semi-Acoustic Electric Guitar !

Lots more stories from Chicago, but another day perhaps. Happy memories !

P.S. I love a lot of music which has been produced more recently . . . just listening to U2's "City of Blinding Light". Brilliant.

Champion Jack's been one of my favourites ever since I saw him in 1969 at Accrington Stanley Sportsman's Club (or the Jazz Club, to give it its informal name). I always thought it was fantastic that one of the blues greats should be living in Halifax.

Nice story about B.B. King, too. Thanks for that, Henry.

Once again , Wynonie shows his excellent taste !

The Organisation (pun - Bond played the Organ) were practically unique in not having a lead or rhythm guitarist. Jack Bruce (yes, THAT Jack Bruce) performed all the plucking honours on his Fender Coronado Six-String Bass guitar , occasionally doubling on harmonica a-la-Dylan/Donovan but frequently getting frustrated with having his harp on a frame .

Bond was a visual and musical sensation. His first instrument was the saxophone, and he could play tenor or alto, but as fellow "Organisation" member Dick Heckstall-Smith (whom for years my wife thought was called "de Castro Smith") was one of the scene's finest alto players , so Graham played the tenor - switching to alto when he thought Dick wouldn't notice. But . . . . Bond played it with one hand while playing his Hammond M101 with the other ! Graham was a large bloke and was delighted when kaftans became popular ; a real fashion icon !

The drummer of this bizarre quartet was a legend. Always with a bottle of whisky by the side of his kit, he'd occasionally turn up late and ask to use the "other group's" (i.e. ours, on one occasion) kit. Our drummer, Noddy Greenwood , had just spent £400 on a new Ludwig outfit, but was so pleased that this genius wanted to use it that he okayed it. His face soon went white as Bond's drummer slackened off all the heads and caused massive damage during the performance . It sounded great , though !
The drummer was , of course , Ginger Baker.

We worked with The Organisation on several occasions. They were, indeed , the very best musicians I've shared a stage with .

Suggested Listening : Wade In The Water (long before Ramsey Lewis's version).

Thanks for the compliment, Henry. I'll buy two draw tickets off you this afternoon!

Just listening to some Brother Jack McDuff - hammond organist par excellence - before I set off.

Just listening, as I usually do early on Sunday morning , to James Addeyman's "Down In The Grooves" on Radio Leeds. Also broadcast on the net.

Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, and - of course - Wynonie Harris have featured in the last couple of shows.

Easily the best radio show for "our" kind of music.
