Well BG there is only two types of music I utterly detest, Punk and Rap, the latter I'm sure had a c missing from its spelling;)

Margaret Pilkington 09-01-2012 18:27

Re: Punk heralded the death of pop

No, I don't think Punk was Pop music.......it had a following, but much less so than the true pop music......as for rap, hip-hop, ska, reggae, they all had their followings but...it was more(for want of a better word) specialised...it didn't appeal to everyone.....across age groups...now with pop music you can find youngsters and Grandma's humming/whistling/singing Beatles tunes(substitute your own particular favourite for Beatles).
Real Popular music had a wider following, and Punk didn't kill it at all, it is still going strong.

Agree on that they didn't stop the Bee Gees who were massive in 1978, the year after punks "golden year!" (1977) I see punk as a massive zit on the the face of pop music, when it exploded it very soon cleared up! But did leave a lasting mark = Nirvana!

I think "2 Tribes" is one of the best records of the 1980's! :mosher::mosher::mosher:

Maximum Joy is good also. They have a sound of their own - Horn said he set about making a computer sound like a band -because all their music was automated on computers!

It must be so boring, being young nowadays.

Nothing really new's come along, to kick the apple cart up the arse, since 1987, when Acid and the rave scene happened.

The youth of today are just so dull, lazy, and complacent.

Don't know about boring, but they do have everything at their fingertips -there are times when I think I'd like to change places with my sons, they have so many things that we didn't have or couldn't even dream of having.

Must admit though, I'd do 10 times what they do with the time and resources they have available, even with my 48 years -if i was only 19 or 24 like they are ...Let me loose!:D

As for new music try listening to "Skream" , "High Tech" and loads of others on internet, (if you want more detail can ask Ricky and Eddy for names as I can't remember them). There is new music out there, it's just not on the commercial network.:) (I am constantly bombarded by it!)

Oh I know my techno trance from my handbag house, but it's all just a bastardisation of the dance music that happened when House, and the rave scene started.

From the time of the Teds, Britain invented, and imaginatively reinvented youth culture.

Sadly this is no longer the case.

British youth take their lead from America.

Oh Bondage, Up Your's, Uncle Sam.

You're right.

Forget teds, mods, punks, goths, new romantics.

The youth of today are just as inventive.

Not wearing a belt, and showing the world your knicker covered ass, is so imaginative.

I saw Prodigy on TV recently, a gig from 2010 and they were playing basically same thing as they did 20 years ago - thing is the audience were this generation - by that I mean teenagers early 20's! Point being that they havn't aged. Compare that to someone like Status Quo - 20 years on the audience had aged - but not with the Prodigy!:mosher::mosher::mosher:

I would have thought Status Quo to be a fair comparison.
However, last year I had the pleasure of seeing Roger Waters (ex Moody Bass Player of Pink Floyd) perform The Wall.
There was a very good mix of ages, from those who bought DSOM when it first came out, through those of us in middle age to young teenagers.
And he still fills stadiums the world over, in fact he is still touring, the tour has lasted almost 2 years, this guy is 69 and still going strong.

You know Jay, I could not agree more.
Pop music has never gone away, there are more people listening to it every day.
The Beatles are selling albums every day, they last recorded together in 1970.
On the other side of the coin, punk music has all but gone from everyday life.

Yeah it's kind of ironic really, Roger Daltry, out of that little know band The Who, used to do a global advert for American Express.
While John Lyndon, of the Sex Pistols, world famous..... Does a Country Life advert............

Last year, we landed in Goose Bay, Canada, on our way to Jacksonville (to pick some golfers up, for the Volvo Golf Championship, we have not got the endurance to fly to the USA non stop), our Engineer and I were speaking to the refuler, he asked where we where from and we said Leeds, he immediately replied, I have heard of Leeds, The Who did a album, Live at Leeds. Made me laugh if not our engineer. I could not imagine a similar thing happening with punk

Your wrong - Johnnie Rotten was on the BBC one show Last year! Also this year there was a program on BBC 3 about 1977 and the punks on top of the pops also several programs on Nirvana who were inpired by punk and a form of punk!

I never said it was punk. If you recall the Rock n' Roll Swindle near the end there were some black guys dancing, I don't recall exact detail now but it was like McLaren knew what was going to be big next that was Hip Hop - I don't know what you think:confused: but I think Trevor Horn is a genius of production and McLaren very clever - that is the point I was making!

Paul Rutherford nicked by Raybans, which had lost their glass, whilst we were in Planet X at Macmillans, just off Bold Street, and wore them on Top of the Pops.

I looked better.

Glasses without glass look stupid.

Love this song -heard it in a film earlier this evening.:)

No spooky coincidence on this one.

I truly detested that song.

Still leaves me cold (turkey).

Did you listen to it again, I wonder? There is something a bit dreamy in there ,music-wise, not the singing, which with the video had me thinking of a young Mr. Beckwith on his travels in Egypt and the Orient for business, shortly after he left Italy:D

Couldn't resist this one with today being "San Valentino". Is there a punk love song which stands the test of time?

The Power of Love is an absolute classic- great lyrics, memorable in every way and Holly still does it pretty well in this version.

You were right.

I hadn't listened to it again, before posting I didn't like it.

On your advice I just have.

Nope.

Still leaves me cold.

Perhaps I just don't like music you can't dance to.

Well, unless you fancy whizzing round the floor, doing a minuet.

:D

Unlike this, which is much better for doing a jig to.

Sorry! Not actually a Stranglers fan myself Sue - this tune though has something which does seem insinuate itself into your mind! It's the music i like not his singing..

The following one is less pop and more punk -much earlier but it always makes me smile -great bass line, terrible singing but funny "Cheeky" lyrics! Sorry for the awful pun too!;):D

Funny that susie that's probably the only record from that era that I actually like, I like the haunting backbeat of the harpsichord or what ever it is

Know what you mean John and if I didn't hate it so much I'd probably like it, but all pop music after my teens/twenties inthe sixties leaves me cold apart from one album. Don Mclean's American Pie.

punk was/is just another type of music that anyone an listen to, its another option to service your ears. there are so many types of music, just get out there and listen to something new once in a while. When i was 16 and started work i began going to accy market and bought led zepp's 1st 2 albums, influenced by their 'latest' album In Through The Out Door. I've got loads of cd's now. I don't agree with programs like X Factor, i dont like Simon Cowell, my record collection is better quality than his i bet.:theband:

Punk is pop! You will find that the Sex Pistols were a massive influence on many people and got them into making music in the first place. Even Holly Johnson was motivated by Punk. So were New Order, Adam Ant - the New Romantics and many others! :D

Sorry but I can't agree. Look at The Police, just to try to get a hold in the music scene of the time they made their worst ever songs and died their hair blond and tried to act like punks -pathetic! Made it when they did their own thing.

Market forces were at work - punk was new then but didn't last long...

Can't see even at a distance any influence of punk on Frankie and co. they were original as they were and it was dance music -not that I'm an expert of course;)

i am no fan of pop music especially 80's pop but as for punk been the death of pop the result is in and pop is still around and punk is merely perfomed in small venues such as pubs or town halls by middle aged fat blokes trying to cling onto something that flatlined years ago

even the so called iconic sex pistols john lydon is nothing more than a front man for butter adverts these days.

the only place for punk is as an alternative t-shirt to wearing nirvana t-shirts for college students.

pop music 1 - 0 punk music

Well your ignoring the facts because loads of people who made it latter and got into making music because of Punk said so themselves! The Frankie blokes included - Paul Rutherford was in a punk band the Spitfire Boys! The Cure etc etc then you had the whole Indie Scene of the 80's that came out of Punk Rock - a major player being Alan McGee who also said hearing the Sex Pistols made him think he could be in a band and start a record company. ;)

The Police had a different guitar player when they were playing punk gigs - you don't know if they'd have done the latter music without first playing the punk gigs and making that record! :D

adam ant didnt even chart when he was doing his punk thing with titles like "naked" and a few others i dont even care to remember

it wasnt until he dropped punk completely and started pandering to children that he gained any success in the charts. The gimmicks and rumours about the white line accross his face made them sort of interesting its just a shame teh white line went from above his nose to underneath it when he moved to hollywood to become an epic failure as an actor lol

In my defence when adam and the ants were at their career highlight i was about 8 or 9 years old but i did get his back catalogue from my older step sister and even at such a tender age recognised his punk stuff to be utter garbage.

Seems dropping punk made quite a few bands flourish lol
