This is one of those things that makes my blood boil. My kids attend school regularly and are not late for which they get a little certificate at the end of term.

Try saying that to an employer and you'll find out what's wrong with it.

A prospective employer may write to the school for references and "persistent tardiness" will immediately turn them off.

And that is the whole point. NONE of it can be confirmed. It is a totally biased one sided story which does no-one any favours, least of all the butty shop owner.
