It`s a good workaround for incompatible hardware/software after an "upgrade". I have always needed the disk though, installed with vmware. Nice of Microsoft to offer it for free.

Virtual machines aren't difficult to set up but you would need a retail xp disk.

You could set up a dual boot system with Xp and Windows 7, or install XP on a virtual machine for those non-windows 7 compatible programs.

Dell would say that. An operating system upgrade is not in their interest, they'd much prefer you to buy a new pc. Prob need more memory and drivers may be an issue, but I bet it will run win7 ok,...
