Throughout the planning process, Tesco said the store would create 450 jobs and later pledged to target long-term unemployed Hyndburn residents for half these posts.

and .. what happens ...

Jobs have been given to 64 people classed as long-term unemployed, while a further 127 people have been recruited to work in the £32 million Eagle Street store.

Of those, 44 were Tesco employees transferred from the Nelson store which closed this summer.

now surely tesco should be good at maths .. seeing as they have to add up all the shopping we are going to buy ... and that should be 86 people long term unemployed ... rather than 64 ...

have just realised something my maths are off as well :o ... the excuse being it was 00.36 when i posted it .. and i only got CSE grade 3 in maths ... and i dont have to add up too often ... so that last bit should read ...

now surely tesco should be good at maths .. seeing as they have to add up all the shopping we are going to buy .. and that should be 96 people long term unemployed ... rather than 64 ... (half of 191 is 95 1/2 and you cant have half a person can you? :D)

sorry folks .. though im surprised no one else picked up on it .... but then if im in the wrong i will admit it .. rather than other people i could mention ....:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Fewer jobs on offer at Accrington's new Tesco store (From Lancashire Telegraph)

No Peter, the council should be explaining to the people of Hyndburn why there wasn't a legally binding requirement, when Tesco promised a certain number of newly created jobs, as part of their planning application, that would force them to honour what they stated they'd do, before you approved it.

Still, in the short term, there's always the million pound pot of gold they promised as part of their application. As long as you have that, all is well.

Though I fear the term 'short term' has a lot in common with 'short-sightedness', if you think this money will compensate for all the current businesses who'll close, once Tesco opens.

yer losing it mate, "That" would be the truth! yeh can't expect that n our leader in the same statement.:rofl38::rofl38::rofl38:

Is Britcliffe in line for a Tesco medal to go with his other one?

I have been proved wrong .

There is a relatively short mention of it in a poor article on the effects of the government cuts .

The council should force them into signing a new contract, in which it'll state they can only open on Wednesdays, for a three month 'trial', and then they'll review it.

:rolleyes::D

Good photos Atarah , but I much preferred the area when there was a busy railway station , a thriving Howard and Bullough , a bridge carrying the railway track to Manchester , and Scaitcliffe Pit .

Instead we have Tesco with its broken promises , and not a promising record as a good employer .

Is there a confirmed opening day yet? I must make a note of it and keep well away from the town that day. It will be utter chaos with people and cars milling around all wanting to be the first to give the greedy Tesco shareholders their hard earned (or benefits) cash so they can brag about being the first in.
I will stick to ASDA which I guess will be much quieter for a week or two, at least they have stuck with the town through thick and thin for many years.

Saying that I still get a lot of my booze and other groceries from the local shop.

You could be doubly unlucky, trying to avoid Tesco by taking a short cut along Broadway and end up floundering with the Victorian Swimming Gala!

The Mothership has landed.

Evacuation will follow shortly.

Await further information, regarding how to cope with the probable deaths and destruction, in the immediate vicinity.
