OMG Wynonie! You are sooooooooooooo right! Looks like I cant "take away". The photo is from an old Accrington newspaper dated Nov 1989 with a section referring to "25 years ago". I have subtracted 25 from 1989 and come up with ..... 1967. I never was very good at maths! Sorry! Of course it should read 1964! (hey, and I went to the Accrington High School for Girls!!!!!!)

Hi Garinda, have found this for you. The huge mill you can see was Spring Mill, this would have been on the site of where Broadway eventually was cut through.

Fantastic.

Thank you.

It's hard to think industry was so centrally sited.

Sort of 'the power behind the throne', being at the back of the Town Hall...if it had become that, when that photograph was taken, and not the Peel Institute.

I think Bolton's Town Hall is impressive, as is Rochdale's.

They might be bigger, even grander, but surely no town hall in the country is as pleasing on they eye as Accrington's.

Spring Mill, built around 1844, closed in 1929. In 1887 the mill had 638 looms. Complete demolition took place early 1930's (details from Mike Rothwell's marvellous book "Industrial Heritage".

They were blue and white when erected in the 60s and no doubt looked very smart at the time but now they are a terrible eyesore. I understand the council lease part of the building for the Benefits offices but who uses the rest of the building, I don't know. My view is, if it belongs to someone else, like a private company, surely the council has the byelaws to tell the owners 'Clean it up or else we will and charge you for it!'.

I am hoping attention is going to be given to this building at the council's next regeneration board meeting. Chamber of Trade tell me they have been trying to get something done about them for 11 years. It's a disgrace and a massive blot on Accrington's shopping centre. can you imagine putting up Christmas decorations or bunting for a royal occasion in your living room with the wall paper hanging off the walls and the paint peeling! Because that is how it is when the council decorate the Broadway shopping area with the 60s offices looking more like a Greek tramp ship from the same era!

Well, Mike, seems that HBC have now purchased this building and negotiations have been going on since early in the year. This is probably why they did not appear to act to enforce the last owners to improve the facade.

It is in the Observer, but no link as yet.

Can only be good news .. now we can really have a go if the council don't do anything, however, confident they will. :alright:

Re: DJ's derogatory remarks about Accrington

1) How much has HBC forked out for this building?

2) Given the current budget restraints, where have they got the money from?

3) What plans (if any) do they have for refurbishment (especially external)?

4) How much will that cost to execute?

5) Where will they get that money from?

6) To possibly pay for any redevelopment, do they (HBC) have any plans for rent increases for existing business tenants?
