DJ's derogatory remarks about Accrington
I'm sure most of you will have seen or heard about the recent furore that was caused by the remarks made in wasisname's book about the Accrington Pals on the town centre.
The sad truth is he is right in his reference to the limits there are on shops in Accrington Town centre. Take away the pound shops and the charity shops and we'd be struggling to see another retailer in the town. And I am still trying to figure out why more residents haven't complained bitterly about the delapidated state of the offices at the back of the town hall. They were blue and white when erected in the 60s and no doubt looked very smart at the time but now they are a terrible eyesore. I understand the council lease part of the building for the Benefits offices but who uses the rest of the building, I don't know. My view is, if it belongs to someone else, like a private company, surely the council has the byelaws to tell the owners 'Clean it up or else we will and charge you for it!'. I am hoping attention is going to be given to this building at the council's next regeneration board meeting. Chamber of Trade tell me they have been trying to get something done about them for 11 years. It's a disgrace and a massive blot on Accrington's shopping centre. can you imagine putting up Christmas decorations or bunting for a royal occasion in your living room with the wall paper hanging off the walls and the paint peeling! Because that is how it is when the council decorate the Broadway shopping area with the 60s offices looking more like a Greek tramp ship from the same era! |

Think the original poster is raising a specific question about Rindys favourite downtown building and using the DJs book as point of reference , think the thead title is a bit misleading ;) :D the third and fouth paragraphs seem to be the main point of the post |

Re: DJ's derogatory remarks about Accrington
Why is it that when someone brings up a problem in Accrington, the best some members can do is berate them for not knowing that it has been discussed before ?
(OK .. I have had a go at Bee once … so forget that .. we know he is just a plant.) It is a serious blot on Broadway and has not been ignored by the powers that be. Welcome him to this cause … not childishly criticise him for being ignorant of past discussions on Accyweb. Mike is now pushing this at the Civic Trust meetings and, due to the fact we had someone attend that was employed in the regeneration of Hyndburn, extracted a promise that it would be addressed again. So, why not welcome this ‘brother’ to the cause, in the hope that other people are bringing pressure to resolve this monstrosity of an eyesore. |

Can't see the problem of pointing out other discussions on the subject, and Mike didn't seem particularly offended, unlike some of us when we read one of his comments ;) Quote:

Bullocks. http://www.smileyfaces.ws/Main/Large_Mix/bull.gifhttp://www.smileyfaces.ws/Main/Large_Mix/bull.gif If you're going to start a thread, which refers to the Stuart Maconie story, Margaret R was quite right to point out that there is a thread that discusses this story, and helpfully link it, so the thread starter who wasn't aware of this, could read the comments that have already been made. Your little chum says he is... 'Still trying to figure out why more residents haven't complained bitterly about the delapidated state of the offices at the back of the town hall.' I, like Margaret R didn't 'berate' anyone. I simply linked a thread, which shows peoples' thoughts on this building. A simple search would have shown that in fact 'residents have bitterly complained' about this many times on this forum, in these threads... http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ccy-58418.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...art-55321.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ton-51816.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ies-51073.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...lly-44304.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...lan-36389.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...age-23398.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ive-25232.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ism-25075.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ity-22740.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ock-21385.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...-up-20011.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...ent-19078.html http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...way-13955.html Please don't take this as, and I quote, 'childishly criticise him for being ignorant of past discussions on Accyweb.' but helpfully pointing a newbie to information they might find interesting. Just as I kindly posted the photograph of the building in question, for anyone who hasn't the foggiest what was being discussed. |
Re: DJ's derogatory remarks about Accrington
Besides, I always do a quick search if I'm going to post about something that might have been discussed before.
Otherwise we end up with umpteen threads discussing the same things. Many times we have threads where I've simply posted 'I gave my thoughts on this subject in this linked thread'. People aren't going to endlessly repeat their thoughts about the same issue, in threads discussing the same thing. |

Re: DJ's derogatory remarks about Accrington
My apologies, had I have discovered a thread already in place on this topic I would have simply added to it in order to raise a fresh awareness. 2005 is some way off for its last post.
I take your point about doing a search for the topic and agree I should consider this option before suggesting future threads. However, when I raise the issue of people complaining I do mean to the Town's Council. You can blow all the hot air you like here on Accy web but you won't change owt. |

Though even before 1974, and the formation of Hyndburn, Accrington was a Borough Council, and was joined with neighbouring Urban District Councils. :) |

There was no need for the last two posts.
Your point was valid, and it was churlish to be so pedantic. I apologise. :o |

OMG Wynonie! You are sooooooooooooo right! Looks like I cant "take away". The photo is from an old Accrington newspaper dated Nov 1989 with a section referring to "25 years ago". I have subtracted 25 from 1989 and come up with ..... 1967. I never was very good at maths! Sorry! Of course it should read 1964! (hey, and I went to the Accrington High School for Girls!!!!!!)

Hi Garinda, have found this for you. The huge mill you can see was Spring Mill, this would have been on the site of where Broadway eventually was cut through.

Re: DJ's derogatory remarks about Accrington
Fantastic.
Thank you. It's hard to think industry was so centrally sited. Sort of 'the power behind the throne', being at the back of the Town Hall...if it had become that, when that photograph was taken, and not the Peel Institute. |

Re: DJ's derogatory remarks about Accrington
I think Bolton's Town Hall is impressive, as is Rochdale's.
They might be bigger, even grander, but surely no town hall in the country is as pleasing on they eye as Accrington's. |
Re: DJ's derogatory remarks about Accrington
Spring Mill, built around 1844, closed in 1929. In 1887 the mill had 638 looms. Complete demolition took place early 1930's (details from Mike Rothwell's marvellous book "Industrial Heritage".

Re: DJ's derogatory remarks about Accrington
1) How much has HBC forked out for this building?
2) Given the current budget restraints, where have they got the money from? 3) What plans (if any) do they have for refurbishment (especially external)? 4) How much will that cost to execute? 5) Where will they get that money from? 6) To possibly pay for any redevelopment, do they (HBC) have any plans for rent increases for existing business tenants? |
