I take your point Lampman, but the demographics of the towns are in lots of ways similar..... so what are Burnley doing that is different.....and, that is making a difference?
Because whatever it is, we should look at employing the same methods in Accrington.

Improvements don't always require large amounts of money being spent. In fact, sometimes I think that is where we have got it wrong...we think that by throwing money at a problem it will be solved. It really needs some innovative approaches and maybe some basic 'housekeeping'.

I don't even know who the councilers are. The council website is a joke of broken links and pages with no content :(

Maybe even use those on Community Service to do town centre litter picking and removing graffiti.....they would really be doing the town a service....and it may even get the message across that we need to respect our surroundings.

I thought HBC had formed some sort of partnership with blackburn with darwen for the regeneration of accrington town centre.

Surely, Margaret this would breach their Human Rights! There must be a section somewhere that says they should not be held up to public display.:)
As for the grafity writes some of them must be the thickest things on two legs;they spray thir own names/nicknames for all to see and then can't comprehend if/when the police come calling.

The people doing CS might think it is wrong to put them up for public ridicule even if they benifit the community. Someone somewere would find a law that prevents it.

Proberly if the magistrate sentences them to 240 hours of removing chewing gum of pavements on their hands and knees.

Re: Who is this man

There was a recent article in one of the newspapers about what people on Community service were allowed to do.....in some cases it was very little because there was no-one to supervise them......and on the subject of town centre litter pickers and graffiti cleaners......how would you know that they weren't council employees......? but personally I would label them.....we should know who the law breakers are.....and if they don't want to have their human rights breached......then they should think a bit more about their human responsibilities.....and the communities that they are criminalising.

I think that even TB was in favour of them doing the community stuff in their own community and being labelled as doing community service.....so that the public could see that justice was being done.

It is time we stopped pussyfooting around and made them face up to reality.

I wouldn't ridicule anyone who was cleaning up the mess and litter in our town centre.....I would applaud them.

I don't know who the guy is in the Observer, but I do know there is a Serbian bloke with a very similar name on the Most Wanted List of the International War Crimes Tribunal at the Hague. Could it possibly be him, by any chance? Is Accy a good place to go to ground?

Yes very pretty. We may have speculated how long it would take them to start digging it up but I bet none of us dreamed it would be before they'd even finished laying it.

I quite agree Willow, the quality and the design of the much needed improvements to Broadway are astounding. As well as taking forever, and costing over three hundred thousand pounds, having steel bollards set in black tarmac but bedded in white concrete is bad design in anyones book.

Back to the original thread about what makes us proud of Accy. I think still having the Christmas lights strung up outside the Townhall brings an all year round festive air to the town. Perhaps we could have a special Santa train bringing in tourists to this Lancashire Lapland.
