No.

More empty shops/charity shops, and a once thriving market dieing on it's arse.

And the upper end of Broadway (on which so much of our hard earned cash was spent) has bits of the terracotta coloured resin coming off leaving the bare concrete showing........and the other day the place was covered in litter.
Yesterday the market was a travesty of a market with hardly any stalls.
I'm sorry if this sounds like I'm carping again, but we definitely need some major innovations to bring the town back to a vibrant shopping area that PB thought it would be.

The much trumpeted food festival was a bit of a non-event too. We had family up from down south and wanted to show them some real traditional Lancashire food.

I thought we'd been promised a floral village? Isn't that going to be an improvement?:)

Big trees on Broadway, not these saplings the vandals keep breaking.Call me ignorant but can fully grown trees be uprooted & re-located:confused:

They, the council, that is......cut down some mature trees at the top of Broadway....the reason they gave were that they were 'dangerous'.
Broadway is a dogs breakfast........it is supposed to look 'chic', but most of the time it just looks a mundane mess. Other councils have done far better with their street furniture.

I was surprised to learn that the unemployed is under 2000,sometimes on my visits to the centre it seems that there are that many loafing about the area.
Accrington's problems arent unique nearby Haslingden has nothing to reccomend it a pass through and expect to see tumbleweeds blowing down the roads!
Further afield Rawtenstall and Ramsbottom have utilised their Train Stations to create thriving tourist attractions.
Accrington has the ability to improve ,it is just lacking the neccessary will(and the odd £1,000,000).
As I've mentioned before the council has shot themselves in the foot by sacking the Warden's, so things I fear, unlike the song will only get worse!

Just to comment on this as I found out yesterday and didn't previously know, the unemployment figure only includes those who are receieving job seekers allowance and actively looking for work. E.g those who want jobs.

Yes it's a bit of a con isn't it? (No pun intended).

There are some good specialist shops in Warner Street, maybe the shpooing area needs to be refocused in that area.

The Broadway/Market area are so depressing with an apolopgy for a Market and the pound shops (not forgetting the empty shops).

I find it hard to understand why it has cost so much money to revamp Broadway - why did they need to pay consultants to come up with a plan. Surely returning it to how it was, with the raised flower beds and plenty of forms was all people wanted.

I also think the Market had more character when it was temporaily relocated to Broadway. A thriving vibrant Market would encourage people to want to shop in Accrington, you only have to go to Bury to see how a Market, with lots of different stalls can encourage people to shop in a town. Todmorden has only got a small outdoor Market, but it has several specialist food stalls, which seem to be very well patronised.

Clitheroe market used to be a twentieth the size of Accrington's thriving market, now it's bigger and better than our sad excuse for a market place.

Visiting Accrington Market now, is like visiting it on a non-market day in the past. Mostly empty stalls, a very few hardy stalls open, with their fare spread out, and the wind whistling through, blowing tumbleweed.

Nope Britcliffe is still churning out the same old Google Page Ranking and accyweb moderators are still deleting threads without warning, both very annoying.

A little digression but, yes, think it only polite of the Moderators to PM you to let you know why they decide to delete posts; then you would learn for the next time, like telling a child why they have been punished, etc.

Re. Accy ... I think there is a plenty of regeneration going on at the moment, around the viaduct, Blackburn Road, Broadway, etc., even if you don't personally like it.

Think further plans ahead too per the tender put out to Consultants for a Master Plan for regeneration of the Town Centre and surrounding areas. The fee is huge, so the spending will be huge too ... I await with interest.

Just wondered re. markets in general, do you think they are Nationwide declining, due to cheaper High Street shops ? Clitheroe and places like Skipton thrive I suspect because they are small interesting little towns which attract tourists. Not an industrial town that Accrington used to be.
