Re: Racial tension or just kids?

supposedly govenment passed laws about gangs hanging around but also teh fact that there is a crowd loitering is good enough reason to shift them on

mind you i would rather them be hanging around town on cctv than outside my house

is one side called the jets and the other sharks?

nah i think its just kids being kids - dont think there's much to the racism

i think what happens is that something occurs and then the racism pops up in anger

I grew up in straight up white suburbia. I remember when my big brother was ~16 (~1969) he used the "N" word (regarding negros of african descent:p )! After he was punished, he was asked why he would have anything against Blacks. Racism had certainly not be taught at home (except against the "bloody Irish" and "those Catholics":o) It seems even in our town kids were trying to imitate what was going on in the country at the time.

In Providence and especially in Boston racial tensions were very high. The forced bussing issue and race riots had clearly influence my brother and his friends to come to a predetermined position in the matter I guess. Do you think these same type of things may be having the same effect with these groups of kids?

my sentiments exactly, to me its all about kids establishing an identity, as most of us probably did early teens. i certainly hope so.

Saw it myself the other day;we were in the Calder having some lunch and there 2 definite gangs of kids (chavs or urban ninjas as I call 'em) hanging around outside the place and they followed some Asian lads when they left the arcade. The place had a guard on the door but worryingly I saw no Police presence round there all time we were in. Plenty of traffic wardens though!
It's asking for trouble letting them congregate like that. (not the traffic wardens  )

I think you're probably right, similar to when people resort to things like "speccy four eyes" to someone who wears glasses, or Jade and her 'Poppadom'. It's only seen as a potentially worrying racist problem when it's one gang of white youths and one gang Asian.

Are we allowed to say that these days? I can't keep track of what is and isn't PC any more.

No, and it's been deemed offensive for decades. Unless of course you are in fact a black rapper, then it's perfectly acceptable to call yourself, and your friends it.:D

On the evidence given here, it just seems like gangs of kids, nothing new there.

I didn't mean the word he didn't say - I know that's not allowed. I meant the word he used to describe the word he didn't say. :D Complicated isn't it? You see I don't know if we're even allowed to say 'black' these days or what the officially correct description is any more.

Am confused now, lol.

I'm talking about the word that sounds like digger, which is now used by young black men, about themselves and their homies.

Nah, Willow, you're not really supposed to say that from either a politically correct or general social respect. I sometimes go to a Black church around the corner and play on their softball team. That's the sort of stuff we'll say around each other. However, it's not something I'd head up to Washington, D.C. and say on the streets!

I guess I should have refrained as it could of been a bit offensive if not understood. Most Black folk that I know, especially the older generation, really hate to be referred to as African-Americans. Heck, they're more American then I am.

its a fine line , Barrack Obama is a "clean" one , Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are not ........sorry folks , its American politics .....we have three prominant black Americans involved in politics,(two worthy of Presidential consideration) two of whom have at least one parent born outside the US and they are able to "cross over" and get respect without playing the race card, they are respected for what they are ... Americans , not African-Americans or Black-Americans. Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Barrack Obama , wether you agree or disagree with their politics is beside the point none so far has ever played the race card , unlike Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and thus gets them the sobriquet of the N word

:D No, I didn't mean that one. I know the only people allowed to say that are black rappers.

The one I meant was the one which rhymes with "we grow" and I believe is the Spanish word for black. Which kinda puts Spaniards in an awkward position if trying to be politically correct in a bilingual sense.

I can see their point. I mean it's not as if anyone ever refers to "European Americans" is it? Although I think I have heard people make the distinction when it comes to those of Irish descent. Maybe the Irish don't like to forget their Irishness. We find that's the case when we go to the Feisanna here - most people are proud to declare their Irish ancestry and slip into a bit of an accent and the odd gaelic word or three even if born and brought up here or even several generations born and brought up here! :D
