We can go on and on about being PC,the term Asian is used to describe many different nationalities. Some of whom do not like being lumped together under one generic phrase, others don't mind at all.
People differ in their opinions whatever their ethnic background.I don't care to be solely classed as a European,British will do with English a preference.:D
As for Mr.D's 'Chinese Whispers',here's some more. There could be trouble in town on Saturday........Yes it's the word on the street.

I know it's a bit off thread but that's an excellent post Steeljack!

Willow, if you ask most Americans "what they are" we usually say English, German, Scottish, Swedish, Italian, etc., I think that's what makes us so unique but all the different backrounds can sure cause some problems.

I guess the first time I ever refered to myself as an Americanwas during our trip over there. Now I know that my German Nana would proudly tell folks that she was an American first and foremost.

That also may be the difference with recent immigrants. My grandparents generation came over and relished becoming Americans.

It gets even more complicated when in America the term refers to Chinese and Japanese when here is mostly refers to Indian and Pakistani. Why can't we use the proper names of the countries?

That's very true Willow. It took me a while to figure out that when Accywebbers were taliking about Asians, it was mostly about Indians. Asians to us usually is strictly related to folk from the Orient.

As I posted earlier, older relatives/friends have got involved in a tit for tat violence culture. At the moment it is mostly handbags at ninety paces, but sooner or later they will clash, unless older wiser heads prevail.
It is all made worse by the use of mobile phones to contact the cavalry whenever trouble looms.
We shall hope for the best.

A crowd of 40 to 50 teenagers would scare the life out of me whoever they were. Now that thought worries me. Why should I find large numbers of young people intimidating?

Re: Racial tension or just kids?

It's the perception we now have of young people, much of this comes from the media, but alas some areas of Hyndburn are classed as deprived. This is reflected by the behaviour of some of the people who live there.
