Age discrimination...
ok firstly i want to say that i'm all for OAP/under-18 discounts - not as if they work etc
but there was an interesting piece on how package holidays were now coming under age-discrimination etc because of the new laws - hols such as the 18-30's the convo went on how the group that was pushing for this was doing it for the oldies but said they didnt want to lose the privledges of OAP discounts etc but surely if ur gonna apply one rule for one thing then the same should be applied its not as if an oap at the cinema would take up less space than a full fare payer. or on the bus or the hairdressers etc |
Re: Age discrimination...
I think the OAPs should get their discounts. Most of them have worked long and hard and paid their taxes so to get a bit of a concession is nice.
Not clear on the 18-30s hols. Is this the equality thing rearing its ugly head? Surely common sense should come into it for things like that which are geared up to entertaining a certain age group. |
Re: Age discrimination...
Agree the pensioners have earned the right but I always thought that 18-30 was a niche market.

Re: Age discrimination...
I'm fed up, why just pensioners? I am quickly heading that way but whenever I turn to an 18 year old lady, she always says sod off you dirty old man, now is that discrimination? OF COURSE IT IS!:(

Re: Age discrimination...
Do you think being single should comes under some sort of discrimination too ? .. they don't half load the price. Even the 'singles holidays' are still loaded. Course understand this business wise, not spending as much money on the other facilities, but now most hotels just charging for the rooms , much better idea, if there is a family in that room .. but maybe still should get a discount if only me in the room . Bit like council tax really, but at least get a discount there for being one occupant.
As for the 18-30's .. I think a great idea, keeps them away from us pensioners and holiday companies can furnish their programme accordingly. Never felt, in any way, discriminative. Some people, eh ? |
Re: Age discrimination...
I've never thought it fair that single people should pay a supplement when they have single person sized rooms. If a single person is in a double room then fair enough but if there are single rooms how can they justify a surcharge?
|
Re: Age discrimination...
Single room supplement is the most unjustifiable charge ever thought up. Several times I have paid extra to have a room smaller than my bathroom, where I was 'under the eaves' so could only stand up in half of it!!!
I would love to go on a cruise but the single supplement mark up is 50%!!! Singles ARE discriminated against, and since there are more and more singles around the holiday/hotel industry ought to get it sorted. (Less -fancy a cruise? - do you have the 'black tie' outfit?) |

At one time you could get a hotel room in the U.K. double with single occupancy rates; still more, but a compromise. However, talking abroad here and they are all designed for full occupancy on the whole. The argument will be that the single rate charge is the correct rate, but discounts for more people in the room .. weird. |

Re: Age discrimination...
I have had some very 'pousy' single rooms AND paid over the odds for the privelege of having a room next to the lift/boiler room/anywhere else that is unsavoury and without a view.......and is so small I could almost go to the lav without getting out of bed, a room that is so small it has to be furnished with a doll sized teacup and kettle.....no room to store my suitcase...need I go on?

Maybe we should get together Margaret .. I was lucky enough to go on a cruise with a friend last year, and no way could I have afforded it on my own. If you look, most shipping lines charge more than 50% around 75% excess. There are these offers from companies that specialise in singles, but usually get inside cabins and definitely would not consider without a balcony room .. just not the same. Pensioner discounts do not even come into the equation with holidays abroad .. well, not that I have noticed anyway. |
Re: Age discrimination...
I haven't had pensioner discount on anything....but come next month I am going to have one of those NOW bus cards......and am I going to take advantage of it?
Ooh, I lied....I DID get a seniors discount to get into the Eden Project......It still wasn't worth the price. |
