Damn right they were ... and the stadium was often filled to the rafters ... I remember one game, a cup match against Everton I think, where the fans were hanging off the floodlight pylons. I was standing by the tunnel in the enclosure (I was using my grandad's season ticket) and when the players were coming down the tunnel Adamson turned to one of the coppers and said "I wouln't have your job today for a bloody gold clock." (I think that was the game in which Dusty Miller scored with only a couple of seconds gone in the second half, while the Eveton goalie was still adjusting his jock strap.) :D

Forgotten all about that. Glad you reminded me, Dave. It's one reason why I will never ever touch a Holland's pie again. And it's not because I've got anything in particular against Burnley. However, as far as I'm concerned it's disgraceful that an Accrington-based company should be sponsoring a football club from another town. Very poor show indeed! :mad:

It's in the Accrington postal district. The address is Holland's Pies, Baxenden, Accrington Lancashire.

They probably do, Roy, but, then again, they probably sell more pies in Manchester than they do in both the other towns combined. However, I wouldn't expect to see Wayne Rooney and co advertising their wares. And it's not just about sales, it's about supporting institutions in your own home town. Let's face it, our local football club face a hard enough battle to raise the finances to operate at a professional level - I'm sure one of the town's leading companies could have helped them by sponsoring them (as indeed they have in the past), rather than a club in a town six miles down the road...or is it just my hopelessly outdated ideas about local loyalty? :confused:

I guess it's based on a commercial decision only Mr H. If your'e going to spend a 6 figure sum on advertising you need to see the best return possible for your money. The best return for them is to have as many people as possible seeing the name week in, week out. I have no doubt if they were prepared to spend a 7 figure sum on the same venture it would have been one of the bigger teams who got the benefit, regardless of location.

I think you may be right....I can't see Hollands sponsoring a Premier League side so Burnley must be the nearest 'Local Side' who are willing to take on board a sponsorship that would give some, albeit small exposure, to a championship side.....It would be interesting to know if they sell Hollands pies on Blackburn, Burnley or Stanley? and where the company make the most profit........nothing to do with loyalty I'm afraid.

Yeah, I suppose you're right, Dave and Roy...still find it very sad and I'll still be keeping up my one-man boycott, though. I hope the sausage rolls in Lily Mae's aren't made by Hollands or I'll be having words with Mr Gregg! ;)

They sell them at Burnley. It was actually Clayton Park who supplied the last year but they couldn't cope with the demand.

Just to make you feel a bit better remember Hollands is technically no longer a local company, it's a Leeds company, so at least the Yorkies are paying out for a Lancashire team :D
