Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
Cllr. Marlene Howarth said: “After all we invested, it has all now fallen down. It just sends the message that Accrington is closed for business on Wednesdays.”
They probably thought that before they arrived at the Market Hall, as they passed the Peel Street bogs, that you closed. ;) |
Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
How did Accrington (indeed Hyndburn) ever survive before they opened the Market Hall on Wednesdays? Oh yes indeedy, I remember every shop in the borough being open on a Wednesday, no one would dream of closing up early midweek.
Except.....that's a lie, isn't it? There's only ructions regarding Wednesday opening because of meddling by the previous administration, everyone was quite happy before. Kudos to Clare Pritchard who has listened to every single market trader and made a decision based on the will of the majority. Just take a look at Bury Market if you need a further argument to debunk 6 day tradng, Marlene. |
Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
People only have so much money in their budget.........opening for another day of trading puts costs up for the traders...meaning price rises for customers. It doesn't make good business sense.
I am glad that the traders are now being left to decide if it is worth their time to open on a Wednesday. |

I am really surprised by the way it was poorly handled when it could have been turned into such a good publicity stunt.

Re: Market Hall Refurbishment
Lets not forget Cllr Howarth didn't the make decision on her own, none of the Tories in Hyndburn make a decision or speak up without being told to. There was another motive for opening the Market Hall more.

The council were wrong to try. The Market Hall has successfully housed many businesses over the past hundred and forty years. If it isn't broke, don't try and fix it. No one ever had a problem with the place being opened on a Wednesday, but making those who didn't want to trade that day was idiotic. No matter why this was enforced, the majority of traders were of the mind that it was all tied in to the new first floor cafe opening there. The refurbishment carried out under the last council's leadership was a success. The fact that there are less market stalls in there now, after the refurb, isn't such a successful outcome. |

Ok. Can it be in a cafe with toilets close by? As any shocks could mean I might pee myself. http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...Jipb5RKr_N8Qnm |
