I've just thought of another constitutional probem that will surface in the future. Assuming the Leader's Medal is something that is carried by the holder for life (with a new medal struck at a cost of 77 pounds plus VAT), then the current Leader will wear the medal at every formal occasion.

But correct me if I'm wrong. As yet, he hasn't been Mayor, despite qualifying for the honour due to his being the longest serving member for his party. So when he is eventually elected Mayor, will he be allowed to wear both the Leaders Medal AND the Mayoral Fob?

And how will he be addressed? As Mister Mayor.....

...or as the Old Leader?

When Britcliffe has to surrender his Leader's Medal, then maybe he could get an armband and stick it on his left arm. Even with an appropriate symbol, I think the cost would be no more than ten bob; it would serve as a reminder of what he once was.

It's a thread that HAS to be resurrected, because it raises issues of the utmost importance to the new administration.

Forget the cuts. Forget the Coalition Government. Forget the problems facing the market traders.

Only one thing is occupying the minds of voters the length and breadth of Hyndburn regarding ex Leader Councillor Britcliffe.

Is he or isn't he?

Is he going to hand over the Leaders Medal to dashing new Leader Miles Parkinson or not. Does the Leaders medal (cost 77 pounds plus VAT) pass over to the new leader, or is it something to be taken to the grave by an outgoing Leader.

We wait with baited breath.............

It's something that few have dared to question although many in Hyndburn suspect won't get an answer.

'Will Peter Britcliffe be returning the Leader of the Council's medal?'

It will be submitted for the list of questions at the next standard meeting of the full council.

Maybe the awarding the leader with a medal will be discontinued and the present one will be placed in a glass case for all to see with an inscription saying something about the last leader to wear it.

As the Leader's medal was a tradition started by the previous incumbent at the request of the previous incumbent without anyone else wanting it other than the previous incumbent it seems only fair that said ex-Leader should pay for it himself if he wishes to keep it, seeing as it is council property.

I can state with a reasonable degree of certainty that Miles Parkinson would never wear such a thing.
