Greece........................Sink or Swim?
Do you think it is time to pull the plug?
It would be very interesting to know how much Greece have paid into the EU and how much have they had out? Greece can't afford to be in the Euro. Neither can we. |
Re: Greece........................Sink or Swim?
Not really any of my business any more, but am I wrong in thinking that the EU is not really all that good of an idea. Apart from the economic issues, the question of democracy looms large ... ironically large in the case of Greece. If it is that unpopular, why the hell don't folks just tell their governments to opt out. The economic union thing I could accept; but all the political bs that goes along with it: I don't be thinking so. We can live with NAFTA ... it has always loosely and unofficially been there. In fact, it's hard to do without it, considering that the Province of Ontario alone trades more with the US than does China. But closer political ties with the US, no way.
By the way, my answer would be sink. |
Re: Greece........................Sink or Swim?
By the way ... If Greece goes, will there be some sort of domino effect.

Re: Greece........................Sink or Swim?
One things for sure if Greece defaults on loans or cannot pay it won't do the UK economy any favours as Greece owes the UK at least £5 billion...Eurozone nations like Germany and France will suffer most and even though the UK is not a member of the Euro we still ended up "loaning" billions to bail out Ireland. :(

Blimey, happy we're off to Menorca, rather than Greece for our hols.
BBC News - Greece protest against austerity package turns violent I think soon, the chance of actually being able to spend your Euros there will be slim. Better off taking stick, stones, or any other weapons. Which can then be bartered in exchange for goods and services. I'm sure there'll be plenty of locals willing to take them off your hands. |
Re: Greece........................Sink or Swim?
I wonder how many of that lot rioting on the streets of Athens tonight are OAP's? The retirement age in Greece is 58, while that in Germany - who have been making the biggest contribution to the Greek bail-out - is 67. No wonder our Krout cousins are not happy bunnies.

Have you seen some of the women around Accy recently? The big fat 'uns, 29 going on 80. Maybe Accy should twin with Athens. We could build a panopticon structure on top of t'coppice, and call it the Accyopolis. |

No...it's simple enough. We give 'em a once and final offer...10bn euros cash, to be paid into the Bank of England by friday. Otherwise they can forget about it, in perpituity. Alternatively, we'll take the rest of the marbles off their hands for fifty quid.

Re: Greece........................Sink or Swim?
If the Greeks default and quit the Euro, they will have some short term benefits. The Drachma will be worth zilch; so their exports will receive a boost. And tourism will go through the roof. On the downside, lots of European banks will take a kicking. Major financial institutions will be replacing the toilet paper in their washrooms with Greek government bonds.

Our economy shouldn't be connected to so many fragile countries. Ones that have had civil wars in living memory, and have been run by military dictatorships, or even fascist despots. Soon, we can look forward to having a country of 75 million join the mix, when Turkey is admitted, and even though the majority of the country is in Asia. All political parties are too scared to give people a chance to decide our involvement with E.U...because they know as fact what the result would be. |

Just a little aside, the party in power presiding over Greece's present problems is Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pakos) since the introduction of the Euro in 1999 they've had 2 goes of ruling the Country with a short lapse between 2004-09 when the New Dems (ND) were in power.
Now have a ponder on that. |

Re: Greece........................Sink or Swim?
I read last week that the Foreign Office is recommending that ex-pat British should register with the British Consulate. They obviously know what is coming.
I feel so sorry for the Greek People. I wonder if any will pity us when it is our turn? . |
Re: Greece........................Sink or Swim?
Rioting is never justified but homelessness and hunger make it understandable.

Re: Greece........................Sink or Swim?
MargaretR, you've cried wolf and forecast the end of the world so often I've stopped preparing for it! If you're right and it all happens I'll be caught out and blame you!
The inevitable ending to this 'Greek Tragedy' is becoming more obvious as the days go by but the world will survive-'Tomorrow is another day'. |

but to the materialistic money grabbers it may well feel like it.:D Money is an invention to reward work, and enable easy distribution of food , goods and services. Local currency systems have been set up in some places, which are out of the reach of B.w.ankers. There is always barter - just ensure you have plenty of stuff to swap until a new style monetary system is established in your locality. A moratorium on debt would be nice for all those who have been fleeced by this failing system:) If you have (while you still have:rolleyes:) a nest egg, stock up on barterable goods - especially non perishable food - there are plenty of folk who already have. |

They spit as well, or so I am told. Mind you if you dry their baba in the sun it can be used as fuel for the fire. Well, I suppose it would make an interesting change from nutty slack.
|
Re: Greece........................Sink or Swim?
Stink, spit? I wonder if I'd notice any diff.....no, better not go there either.
On the positive side if you can't give them away I might get a whole herd of camels and goats- must book us a holiday, according to MargaretR it might be a good idea to get a taste for camel |
Re: Greece........................Sink or Swim?
I buy goats milk instead of cows milk.
Goats have different digestive systems from cows and are 'fussy eaters' (like me :D) Whatever they eat ends up in you. Some of the junk fed to cows (think BSE) would not be eaten by a goat. |

Don't goats eat boots, fences, hankies, your hand, anything they can get their teeth into? Cows milk sounds safer! |

Well, I hope the Greeks manage to hang on to their goats, they're going to need them if even a fraction of what I read comes to pass.

The Greek have goats? Perhaps I should hold off booking that holiday- I might get a better deal in Greece in a few weeks!
