Mathew Parris, writing in yesterday's Times has some pertinent things to say about the immigration argument.

Re: Graham's comment about no one associates Asians with violent crime.

True the first wave of Asian immigrants seemed to be hardworking and many have done very well, some of the richest people in the country are Asian. Having lived in a part of London for 17 years with a large Asian population, sadly the same cannot be said of all of the third and forth generation.

I have been mugged at knife point by aggresive Asian youths. Most of the crime in that part of London was drug based and who was running the drugs industry? The Asians.

I don't consider myself a racist, and l judge people on how l find them individually.

Sadly though, l think within 50 years our country will be having a religous civil war along the lines of Bosnia.

Graham
Look in the Observer every Friday & view the who's been in court reports then advise us at to ratios of crime overall. Funny how fifty asian youths rampaged through Blackburn last weekend & hit an innocent bystanding young white girl over the head witha metal bar putting her in casualty. More funny how nothing was reported at all in the paper about this incident. It is gospel cos I spoke to the mother of the girls best friend who was at her side at the time of the incident. Not third hand! I am not saying this is common or all down to one race, there is good & bad in all races, but it does magnify things when covered up. Profumo was small scale until uncovered wasn't it.

What's alarming is how any discussion about immigration immediately switches to the racism issue. The two things can be quite seperate. We live in a country that has it's services stretched to the limits, our NHS can't cope (just look at the average waiting times to see a Doctor or specialist), education is struggling etc, pensions are a mess, benefit culture is rife and right here and now this country can not take any more people coming into it - we simply can't cope. It's irrelevant whether these people come from the Ukraine, Pakistan, Norway or even Australia - our country simply can not cope with more people that are going to make any sort of demands on the services. It is not racist to say this and it is not an issue about who would make the best neighbours, it is about the resources of the country being stretched to the limit.

Interesting point Purple lass. This country couldn't get locals to do some of the jobs you quote are under severe demand, hence tha politicians made an agreement in returning parts of the commonwealth to include british citizenship. Because of the hostility of the locals the race relations act was born. However in the rush to restore some equalibrium the act was rushed & left so it could be used only one way, against the locals. So who really is responsible for racism? The old story of Mr Nobody because no one ever has taken responsibility for their own mistakes. Talk about shooting oneself in the foot. The longer time that elapses then the more difficult it will be to put right. Before you jump in & call me racist, I will clarify this by explaining simply what I mean. Re write the whole of the race relations act so it covers all sides, not just one as at present. Probably the problem is that this is too simple for some & unless it is complex it is no good for these ones. Bring back plain English.

just a thought,i remember in the 50s a polictical chap going over to the west indies, inviting people to britain to work on the tube etc cos the jobs could not be filled by the british public, that was really about the starting point for mass immigration i think the chaps name (believe it or not) ENOCH POWELL,on behalf of the tories. am i wrong or what?

What has all this got to do with a fairground ride ?

Forget the fairground ride the current topic is far more interesting besides we can post about the ride when it gets here as I'm sure we will have a bit to discuss.

Oh I see............ it is a nom de plume for a political thread.
It does make for an interesting read......but I have only just read it because I thought it was about the fair.

Who mentioned politics? I simply commented on the fact my son had seen an asian lad who had bought an anti racism band & promptly took the white band off. I understood the thread was more about the effect of the Race Relations Act. Oops, sorry forgot, it was politicians who inflicted the whole thing on us.
Nice one Chav- you have probably summed the whole lot up in one. lol

Any chance of the moderators splitting this thread into two separate ones, please.
